Chapter 140 CHAPTER 140
Michael’s POV
I shifted back to my human form and ran to her side. The man had scampered away, although he was badly injured. She was lying on her side, bleeding and unresponsive.
“Evelyn,” I called out, tapping her arm. She made no response.
“Shit!” I cursed. I reached for my phone and called emergency. “There’s an emergency. She is pregnant and bleeding. Unresponsive.”
I sent the location and called Jasper too.
“I need you here as soon as possible.” I told him.
I tried to identify where she was bleeding from. There was a deep wound on the right side of her abdomen. I tore out my shirt and tied it around the wound, hoping it would slow down the bleeding before the ambulance arrived.
It took five agonising minutes before I heard the siren of the ambulance outside the resort. Two men rushed in with a gurney and a gas mask. The sound of the ambulance, and the sight of Evelyn being placed on the gurney with a gas mask over her nose brought back memories of that afternoon- The day my mother died.
I had not been able to remember what I had seen that day well because I had blocked them out. But i remembered the gas mask. The rescue team had placed a mask over her nose. It meant she was still alive when she was found and taken to the hospital.
I hurried to my car and drove behind them, pleading to the moon goddess to preserve her and save her life. When we arrived at the ER, the doctors said she needed to have two surgeries. Her liver was damaged and there was too much pressure in the head from her injury.
“What about the baby?” I asked.
“If we can stabilize her, we will deliver the baby,”
I signed the consent form and hoped I would not be greeted with sad news at the end of it all. I stood in the waiting area, unable to sit for hours. Jasper arrived a few minutes after I did. He made all the calls. He called Evelyn’s mother and told her about the situation. He called the police and they sent a team to have Xavier and the others arrested. He also called Alpha Raymond to tell him what had happened.
I leaned against the wall, nauseated and irritated. I should have been with her. What was I thinking letting her be alone. I was careless. I knew Xavier was in town, yet I had left her alone. I bit my lips till they bled and cursed myself for being careless.
Anna arrived first. I was shocked at how soon she arrived.
“Where is she?” she asked, looking around with worry all over her face. Then she saw my familiar face, she walked towards me. “What happened to her?” she asked worried. “What happened to Evelyn?”
I held her and squeezed her shoulder. “Evelyn is strong. She will be fine.”
She collapsed against my chest. “I told her to leave. She insisted that she wanted to stay with you. Yet you couldn't protect her.”
I watched as tears dropped down her face.
“I’m sorry for failing her,” I begged. “You can hate me, ma’am. But please, forgive me.”
She sobbed for another minute before she leaned away. “Where is she?”
“She's in the theatre,” I said.
“I sensed it,” she said. “I lost connection with her and I knew something was wrong. I was on my way here when Jasper called. Who did this to her?” she asked. “I want to know who would do this to Evelyn”
“It was Xavier,” I replied.”He has been arrested again. He won’t escape his punishment this time.” I wished I had killed him with my own hands. It would be a better punishment for laying hands on my wife. I doubted he would survive without permanent injuries though.
Alpha Raymond arrived next. When Anna saw him, she cowered in fear. I stepped in between both of them. “I heard you were injured,” he said. “But you look alright.”
“I'm alright it wasn't that bad,” I replied. “Evelyn was the one who got terribly injured while trying to save me.”
He glanced at the woman behind me. “And who is she?”
I looked back at Anna. “This is Evelyn’s mother. Anna.”
He just stared at her without uttering a word.
The surgery ended about three hours later, and the doctor said she survived it. I didn’t miss the sign of relief on Alpha Raymond’s face. I also didn’t miss the fact that he was constantly looking at Anna too. I wasn't sure why he kept looking at her, but I had caught him many times for it to be a coincidence.
“But she’s still in a coma,” he said. “Her brain was terribly injured from the blow to her head. It had damaged some parts before she was brought in. but we noticed her body heals fast, so we are hopeful.” The doctor said and I felt relieved.
I nodded.
“The baby was also delivered safely, and he has been placed in an incubator.”
I had become a father on one of the worst days of my life.
“Thank you, doctor. Can we see her now?” I asked.
“You may.”
She was lying in bed with a large bandage over her forehead when i walked into the room. There was a monitor by her side, beeping gently. Her eyes were swollen and shut. I took her hand and placed it in mine.
“I’m sorry, Evelyn,” I said. “Please, come back to me..” I squeezed her hand.
Anna stayed on the other side of the bed, trying her best not to cry.
“She’ll wake up from this, right?” I asked.
She pointed at the injury on the right side. “Her wolf was severely wounded. She might survive it but she may lose contact with her wolf for good.”
I squeezed her hand again and kissed it. I was only going to focus on the positives. She would survive it and her wolf would still be intact.
Alpha Raymond was still in the waiting area when I stepped out about two hours later. “You are still here?” I asked.
He rose up to his feet and walked towards me. “How is she doing?” He asked looking a bit worried.
“She is in a coma,” I blurted out.
He patted my back. “She will come out of it. She is a fox.”
I couldn't help but notice his strange behavior.
“You don’t need to pretend you care about her, Alpha Raymond. You can go home now,” I said.
He stared at me. “Go home? Without seeing my grandchild? impossible.”
I was shocked by those words considering how he tried to harm the baby.
