Chapter 113 CHAPTER 113
Evelyn’s POV
The needle was already deep in my arm and she was about to push the content in when Alpha Michael walked in on her. Her hand flew from my mouth and she was out of the door in an instant. He was too shocked to stop her. He ran to my side. I was shaking and sobbing.
“She tried to force something into my arm,” I cried, coughing.
The syringe was still lying on the tray. He glanced at the door, and back at me. I could tell he was deciding whether to chase after the lady or stay by my side. I wanted him by my side. My fingers tightened around his arm, and he knew.
He picked up the syringe from the tray and his brows furrowed. “We’ll have to find out what this contains,” he said. “And we must find out who is responsible for this.”
I didn't tell him his father had come visiting, nor the things he had said to me. I didn’t tell him I suspected the fake nurse had been sent by his father either. I just leaned against him, grateful enough for his presence beside me until my heart pace returned to normal.
No one knew her. She wasn’t a recognised staff of the hospital. Alpha Michael was restless and I was scared.
“My baby,” I whispered.
The doctor examined the syringe. “This would have stopped the heart of your baby,” he said. “We are lucky she was stopped just in time.”
My mum insisted that I had to leave the hospital. Everyone wanted me to leave, even though the doctor kept saying I needed to be monitored.
“She’ll be monitored by a private doctor in my mansion,” Alpha Michael said. “Give us a discharge note.”
I saw the look of grief on my mother’s face. She didn’t want me any close to the Greywoods. I knew the reasons why but I had signed a contract, and it was binding. When we were alone, she straightened the crease on the bed silently. I was getting ready to leave and Alpha Micahel had gone to settle the bills. I watched her silently.
“I’ll be fine, mum,” I said.
She didn’t look at me.
“Mum,” I called out.
Our eyes met and she smiled. “You took care of yourself all these years, Evelyn. I know you will be fine.” She squeezed my leg fondly. “It’s just a few months left. Your aunt and I will make preparations for us to leave here.”
I nodded.
“The baby…”
She had never really talked about the baby before.
“Is it his?”
I nodded.
“He mustn’t know,” she continued. “If he does, he won’t let you go. Or he will take it from you.” She stopped. “You remember that you don’t belong to his world, Evelyn."
She didn’t need to remind me. I knew the attempt to take my baby’s life had been alpha Raymond’s doing. Then there was the problem with Rosaleen setting me up as her assaulter.
“I won’t,” I promised. But I felt a squeeze in my chest.
Alpha Michael returned a few minutes later and he beamed. “Cleared to leave,” he said.
I was too happy to be gone.
We walked out of the hospital and headed towards his car. “Did you check on Rosaleen?” I asked.
He opened the car door on my side. “She is recovering fine. Jasper was in her room.”
I took the seat. “Is she still saying it was me?”
“I don’t want you to worry about that,” he replied. “I’ll sort it out.”
“I want to know what she’s saying,” I insisted.
He closed the door and turned around. I waited patiently until he arrived at the driver’s seat and closed the door.
“She’s still telling the same story, Evelyn. She never planned to change her mind.” He started the car. “You were with me when it happened. I’m your alibi.” He winked at me.
“A very convenient one,” I said.
My mind was occupied with his presence throughout the ride. I tried to think of other things and even get distracted by the numerous trees and building we passed, but none of them successfully held my attention. My mind would drift back to him and linger. I was thinking of the things we had done and imagining those we hadn’t. I tried convincing myself that it was the closeness, the heat of his body next to mine and the way his muscles of his arm flexed when he took a turn…
I looked away.
“Do I make you uncomfortable?” he asked and I felt my heart leap to my mouth.
I looked at him. “No…no..” and then I wondered if he could read my mind.
“Why do you keep looking away?” he pressed further.
I smiled. “You should concentrate on driving,” I said. “You are driving like a snail.”
“Yeah?” he said, cocking his brows. “I was being considerate.”
He stepped on the gas and the car zoomed off. My fingers tightened on the seat and my knuckles turned red but I didn't beg him to stop.
When we arrived at the mansion, he steered me towards his room. I planted my feet on the ground and refused to budge.
“My room is that way,” I said, pointing in the opposite direction.
His arms wrapped around me and I felt my knees turn to jellies. “How am I supposed to monitor you if you sleep miles away from me?”
I relaxed against his body and allowed him push me towards his room. “You’ll sleep on the bed from now on. I’ll take the couch,” he said. “I enjoy sleeping on the couch," he added before I could protest.
I walked towards the bed. Sleeping in the same room as him was going to make things even more complicated. The air inside the room was already getting filled with unexplored desires. I spun around to talk to him, but my eyes caught a similar envelope. It was an envelope I recognised because it had the bold logo of Moon’s Enterprises on it.
