Chapter 111 CHAPTER 111
Michael’s POV
I looked at her and I saw the confusion on her face. That was expected. What was this man talking about?
“That’s not possible,” I said. “She was with me all afternoon.”
The Policeman shrugged. “We found the victim unconscious, with a note beside her saying Evelyn Moon tried to kill her.”
She parted her lips to speak but words failed her.
“Anyone could have attacked her and dropped that note there to incriminate her,” I said.
The man seemed annoyed that I wasn't letting him do his job or I was telling him what he knew. “We have not said Miss Moon is the assaulter. All we want to do is question her.”
I didn’t like the idea of her being questioned at all. It was plain to me that Rosaleen had done that because of our breakup. How far was she prepared to go to soil Evelyn’s name?
“Can I see this written note?” I asked.
He hesitated. “It’s part of the evidence right now, and I don't have access to it.”
“A photo of it,” I insisted. I would be able to identify Rosaleen’s handwriting if I saw it. That way I'd know if this was her handiwork or someone else’s.
He reached for his pocket and dug out his phone. Then he unlocked it and showed the photo to me. It was Rosaleen’s handwriting and I could see it was written slurrily.
“Is she okay?” I asked.
“She has been taken to the ER.” he faced Evelyn. “Please, ma’am. It won’t take more than a few minutes.”
She nodded.
He asked for her routine throughout the day. He asked if she had given Rosaleen an appointment and he asked if she had any reason to harm Rosaleen. Then he told her she may need to come to the station for more questioning.
“Why?” she asked, raising her brow.
But I had seen why.
It was announced silently on the TV in the reception of her office and I caught the suspicious glances and whisperings of the workers. There were pictures of Evelyn Moon and her aunt with her mother meeting. There was confirmation from different witnesses that Evelyn Moon was a nine tiled fox and questions were arising if she had truly harmed the ex fiancee of Alpha Michael Greywood.
I didn’t want her to see the news, so I didn't object to her being taken to the station.
“Let’s go,” I said, shielding her from turning towards the TV.
She began to protest. “There’s no reason for me to be questioned about this extensively.”
“I’ll explain to you later,” I said and we walked out of the company.
I refused to let her be driven in their car and drove her in mine instead, with the police tailing behind us. I struggled to find the right way to tell her that she was a prime suspect because of what she had always warned me of.
She looked at me, waiting for my answer. I squeezed her hand reassuringly. “It’s going to be alright,” I said.
Perhaps she was too shaken by it all, but she took that simple reassurance and she didn’t ask me any questions.
While she was being questioned, I decided to pull the strings I had. I walked into the office of the station chief. He was a man whose rise to his current position had been by the influence of Alpha Raymond. He was pleased to see me.
“I’m not here on a good note, Chief,” I said, refusing to take the seat.
He understood immediately.
“Why is my wife being dragged to your station to be questioned?”
“It’s a delicate matter,” he said. “The woman who was injured -”
“Was my ex fiance! And the one being held is my wife!”
He tugged at his beards, a habit he had developed to ease stress. “There are certain peculiarities," he said. “She … Your wife has been seen to be associating with…” he struggled to find an appropriate word. “Society misfits,” he finally said. “And there has been increasing evidence that she is indeed one of them.”
I felt a surge of anger rise in my chest. “Is that enough reason to treat her like a criminal? I will have your department sued for this.”
“Alpha Raymond is behind this,” he said. “You are alone in this, alpha Michael. I’m sorry.”
I nodded slowly, then stood up.
Alpha Raymond was the one behind all the harassment. I reached for my phone and saw that I had a couple of missed calls from Jasper, the campaign manager and Alpha Raymond.
I called my father.
“Michael,” he said, his voice hot. “What in the name of the gods have you done to me?”
“Alpha Raymond,” I said, ignoring his comment. “You had the police chief arrest Evelyn for no reason. How low can you sink?”
“Very low!” he yelled. “You and that witch have single handedly destroyed my career. You had the guts to publicly announce that she is your mate. I will make sure I send her to a place where you won’t be able to reach her.”
Alpha Raymond was a man who threatened and did unreasonable things when he was angry. I knew it wasn’t the best time to talk sense into his head. Whenever he came to terms with the fact that he could lose the elections, he would take back his actions. But it might be too late.
“I won’t let you treat her that way!”
“Look in the news, boy!” he yelled. “She is a nine tailed fox. She has no place here. Not less with an alpha wolf. Get to your senses, Michael.”
He hung up.
It was my fault. She had warned me this would happen. Now I have to make sure I fix it anyway I can.
I turned towards the interrogation room and saw an ambulance wailing outside. I panicked. Someone was running out of the room, and I grabbed him.
“What is it?” I asked, looking out for Evelyn.
There was terror in his eyes.
