Chapter 108 CHAPTER 108
Xavier’s POV
He tossed a wrap of bread to me and a towel which I used to wipe the dirt off my face. “Eat up,” he said. “We have a long day before us.”
I grabbed the bread and tore up the wrap. It was my first meal in over twenty four hours and my stomach was growling with hunger. We had been hiding in a house, sleeping and waking up in darkness. I finished my portion of bread in two bites. It was not sufficient but it was enough.
He looked at me. “Your father used to be with the gang until he lost his life in our last raid.”
I listened. He had told me while we shared the cell room together that I looked like someone he used to know. We got talking and I found out he actually knew my late father. My father used to belong to a gang of robbers.
“If I knew he had a son, I would have looked for you a long time ago and made sure you were well taken care of.”
I said nothing. I didn't need him to take care of me. I was able to take care of myself and I knew the first person on my list to deal with as soon as I left Barcelona.
“How did you say you got in again?” he continued, getting on my nerves. “A woman? Women are just bitches. Not worth a real man.”
“It was a woman,” I said, flatly.
I had enough time to think about Evelyn during the periods I was alone in the cell. She had betrayed me in the worst way possible. After everything I had done for her and given her, she ran off to be with the one person who had hurt her. And sent me to rot in jail.
I wasn’t returning to make her mine again. I was going to make sure she was no one’s since I couldn't have her.
“Your father didn’t give a damn about his women,” he continued. “None of us did. You said your mother’s name is Madeline? Never even met her.”
I squeezed the empty wrap in my hand. Perhaps he was right. Women didn’t deserve love. My mother, who had apparently lied that the man I grew up with was my father, Evelyn, Rosaleen and every other woman.
But Rosaleen was the first on my list.
We moved a few hours later after one of the other men brought their fake papers. We were going to travel out of Barcelona by sea.
—
I found my way home as soon as I arrived. It was the safest place I could hide even though I knew it would be the first place that would be searched. Madeline gasped as she saw me. It felt as though she had seen a ghost.
“Xavier,” she said, her hand cupping her mouth.
I closed the door and turned the lock.
“So, it’s really true,” she continued, moving towards me. She stopped. “I told you this silly obsession you have with Evelyn would put you in trouble. You’ve caused us so much damage.”
I didn't think I owed her any explanation. I moved past her, ignoring her comments.
“Are you not going to say anything to me? You can’t just walk in here like you own the place.”
I stopped. “I won’t be here for long.”
“Xavier!” she called after me but I continued up the stairs. I shut the door behind me and collapsed on the chair, exhausted. I didn't think I was ever going to return to New York after leaving. Especially not as a fugitive. All my accounts were frozen and the only money I had left were the ones Kyle had locked away in offshore accounts.
I took a long nap, then I called Kyle with my sister’s phone.
“I’m back,” I said, simply.
“New York?” he asked.
I remained silent. “I need some money. My accounts have been frozen.”
It was his turn to remain silent. “Kyle?”
“I have some bad news for you, Xavier,” he said.
I leaned up. “What is it?”
“Those accounts have been discovered and a lot of them have restrictions placed on them. It’s going to be hard to process a transfer without raising any signals.”
“What? You told me those accounts were safe, Kyle. What happened?”
“Yeah. They are still safe but there are investigations around you,” he said.
“By who?”
“Your sister. Evelyn Moon,” he said.
“How.. How did she know?” I asked, rising up and walking towards the window.
“She became the CEO of Moon’s Enterprises,” Kyle explained. “I don’t know how she was able to purchase the company. Seems like a joint ownership. Once she got in, she started digging details of finances over the years. She found the leakages and she has been after us for weeks.” He stopped. “She has managed to get one of the accounts locked.”
“Fuck,” I said.
“Yeah. I can loan you some money if you need some urgently.”
I did.
I decided to see Moon’s enterprises for myself and perhaps, Evelyn Moon would be the first person I would deal with. She deserved no mercy for ruining my life and still trying to steal the money I had stashed away all these years. I took a baseball cap and added some moustache on my face. It was enough. I wasn’t being hunted in New York.
Moon’s enterprise was different from the entrance. I could see that she was doing an amazing job. As I passed through the reception, I caught the news of the announcement of Alpha Michael’s engagement to her officially. I felt my chest tighten with rage and all I wanted to do was to pull two bullets into her head.
I moved to the executive floor. I knew it too well. The floor was quiet and it was easy to avoid being seen by the CCTV cameras. I stood in front of her door and felt all the rage I had ever felt in my life. I had no love for her left. She didn’t deserve it.
I pushed the door open and as soon as she saw me, she gasped.
