Chapter 106 CHAPTER 106
Evelyn’s POV
“You did?” I asked, looking at Maya.
My mum tried to stop her from talking but she placed her hand on her shoulder. “I was there the day Alpha Michael’s mother died.”
Her heart raced.
“Did you…”
She sighed. “She was trying to get rid of her baby and she needed help. Then we got stuck. The baby was not properly positioned. She panicked and she was losing blood.”
I closed my eyes.
“I begged her to get to the hospital but she was ashamed that she would be disgraced. The only way I could help her was to take the baby out.”
I opened my eyes and staggered to the wall. “You cut her open?”
She nodded. “She pleaded that I should save her baby. I wanted to turn her down but she was dying and the baby had a chance. So I tore her open.”
I felt bile rise to my throat.
“I got the baby out but she bled out to death.”
“Aunt..” my voice trembled. “Why… What happened to the baby?”
She sighed again. My mum stepped forward. “We have no idea. I came there when Maya called me. The baby was wrapped and placed in a bed.”
“What happened to the woman?” I asked.
“She died,” my mum continued. “And that was the mistake. Maya should never have helped. I was helping to clean up when Madeline saw me. It was messy. She was going to call the police on us. The only way we could buy her silence was for me to leave Trent for her. She wanted him.”
I pursed my lips. That was the story of how my mother abandoned me when I was a child and how Madeline became my step mother.
“Your mum took the fall for me, basically,” Maya said. “The plan was to use Madeline's silence for a while before we got a final plan. But your mum went into hiding for many years.”
I looked at Maya. How could she have been able to live all these years knowing that my mother went into hiding because of her? She never visited me as a child. I was left alone to grow with a ruthless step mother.
“And you don’t know if the baby survived?”
They shook their heads.
Another Greywood child would not be a scandal anyone would expect. Of course, the child would not be Alpha Raymond’s but it would be an important tool in my hand. Maybe an opportunity to end the contract between Alpha Michael and I.
I just needed to know if the baby survived, and what became of the baby. Going down that path would also put my mum and aunt in danger. Alpha Michael was partly right. But he didn't know the full story.
I thought of Alpha Raymond. He would know the truth about that child. I was certain he had spun that story to save his reputation that his wife had died trying to get rid of a baby that was not his. The only way to find the child was to get close to him.
“How old would that child be if he or she was alive?” I asked.
“About seventeen years,” Maya replied. “It was a baby girl.”
I called Shane after I left the house. “Calvin should reach out to you soon,” I said. “Alpha Michael has agreed to our terms.”
She sounded busy. “That’s great, Evelyn. This seems like the easiest corporate battle I've faced. I thought the Greywoods were biting and barking.”
I chuckled. “I thought so too. Alpha Michael doesn’t want a bad rep, I guess. Let me know as soon as the paperwork is ready.”
I stopped at a restaurant to get some lunch. I was craving a large bowl of ice cream and some burgers. I pushed the car door closed and jingled my key holder in my hand.
“Evelyn?”
I stopped and turned towards the voice. It was Jolene. It was like a dream. I hadn’t seen Jolene for so many weeks, after that morning at the coffee shop.
“Jolene?” I called out.
She nodded. I wasn’t sure why, but I smiled. She noticed the bulge of my tummy before I got to her side.
“Where have you been all these while?” I asked her, contemplating on hugging her or not.
“Been around,” she said. “I … I got kicked out of my job.”
I nodded slowly. I knew she was working with Alpha Roman at one point. “What do you do now?”
She shrugged. “It’s been hard getting internship placement because getting kicked out apparently goes on your records.” Her eyes fell over me from head to toe. “You are glowing. Pregnant?”
I smiled. “Yeah. You wanna come in?”
We walked in together. “I heard the news of you and Xavier,” she said, as we got inside. “I knew it wasn’t true. I was a bitch for telling Alpha Roman about it but I never believed you had anything for your step brother.”
I hummed. We sat down and I placed my order. She ordered the same.
“You told Alpha Roman about Xavier?” I asked.
“He had me fooled, Evelyn. I thought he could love me. I was desperate to get on his good side.”
I snickered. “Where is he now?”
“He left. No one has seen him since he left. I was blamed for being his accomplice, and I was fired.”
I placed my arm on the table. “If things had worked out for you both, would you have felt any remorse? Would you have thought you were wrong for throwing me under the bus, and lying about me just to get his affection?”
She had no answer. She was still. The answer was obvious.
“Right,” I said. There was no point dining with her and pretending that I was okay with her. I pushed the chair backwards. “I’ll be taking my meal out. I’ll pay for yours. Don’t ever reach out
to me, Jolene.”
I got up and just then I caught the news about Xavier being aired. I froze.
