Chapter nine

Chapter nine

Abigail's POV

There was nothing that prepared me for the way the women were shouting when Daniel returned into the pack. I knew because I peeped from the window and saw most of them even going as far as dancing, making me irritated by their display.

Why were they so happy that this tyrant was dragging a man into the pack like a bag of potatoes? This wasn't what was supposed to happen, yet they were this happy? This was very strange and I wasn't even jealous of them one bit.

It was mostly irritating to me. I would have preferred if there was something else that they celebrated. It seemed the people were also as ruthless as their Alpha because the joy was second to none. Now I saw the reason people told their kids horrific stories so that they didn't stumble on this place.

There was a rap at the door and I moved back to my former position. If I was planning so hard to escape this hellhole, then I had to also be ready to make the sacrifices that it required, which was acting like a fool when I actually wasn't. This would help me buy a lot of time which would help me in turn to be able to get out of this mess that I found myself in.

At the end of the day I was left with nothing else but the rap harder than the former. It was more of a warning.

"You can come in ma'am."

A maid walked in with clothes in her hands. By the color combination, I already had an inkling of what I was going to do. "You will be joining us downstairs today at the stables."

My eyes widened in total horror. I wouldn't call myself too privileged because I worked hard back at my pack but this was a totally different ball game. I was thinking about the best way to avoid working with horse shit! It wasn't the best thing to happen to anyone.

"You should know that right here no one is treated specially. We all work our asses off, that's why we're very strong." She spoke.

I didn't know whether to take it as a warning or as a guideline because all that I was just thinking about was the best way that I could abscond. Maybe if I was allowed to go join the maids, one of these days, I could just sneak out. The only problem was that I knew that this fortress was heavily guarded so leaving was going to prove a bit difficult. It wasn't something that one just woke up to do.

"Okay, ma'am. Please give me a minute to change." I asked and she chuckled at my naivety before assessing me up and down. "You don't have a wolf. Why were you brought here then? You're practically..." She trailed off but her eyes did the rest of the talking.

I didn't need anyone to tell me what she wanted to say. I was useless at least in their sight but I would play this game to my advantage and have them regret ever talking to me about anything concerning my life.

"Are you sure that you know what you're doing? You know that this is not going to happen right? The fact that you are being allowed to mingle with the maid doesn't make you one. You're a prisoner, you'll never be more than that."

My ears rang at the words. Why was everyone hurtful in this pack? It was a menace, almost like a virus had spread round this place. Did they even realize that they didn't have so much good manners? I guess it didn't matter to them. Their leader was a brute.

It was a pity that James allowed himself to be used and make fun of me with my sister. If not I would have also been controlling my empire right now and yes I would have come hard for this man who believed that he was better than everyone.

"Yes, ma'am." I replied, trying to bid my time. I just needed to be exposed to the pack for a while before striking.

They must have already been waiting for me because all the maids turned the instant I walked in. They didn't say a word but the adage was right that actions spoke louder than words.

"You will be handling all the stables where the sick mares are kept. They've made that place a mess." She said, I guess she was the head maid. Every pack had these people who acted like they were the best thing since sliced bread. I would never understand the entitlement and audacity that they possessed.

"Follow her, she'll lead you to your duty post."

I heard the clicks of heels descending through the stairs and I stared at the owner. It was the lady I met earlier today. I guess she was out to draw my blood.

She didn't take pity on my skin and I was almost forced to ask what I had done to ever deserve such harsh treatment from her.

"Follow me now." The maid that I was assigned to nodded and I followed in the direction.

The scent of brine and piss alerted me that I had arrived at one of my worst places. It was just so strong that I couldn't shake it off. Oh boy, these horses had really made a mess. That wicked lady had said it earlier but I didn't even know what I was expecting because I sincerely didn't expect to be hit with such a high caliber of smell.

It was too much to be true. "I hope that these are not problems or would they?" She asked me.

I shook my head knowing that I dared not have a contrasting opinion because that was just setting myself up for drags and as much as I was concerned, I didn't think that I wanted to incur anyone's wrath.

Instead, I would rather stay away.

"Yes, ma'am. I can do it."

A few hours later, and I was dripping from the sweltering heat that threatened to annihilate me as far as it was concerned. The sun obviously had no regard whatsoever for anyone else except itself.

"Are you sure that you're doing a good job there or do I need to come check on you?!" A woman with a screeching voice yelled and I rolled my eyes.

I might have just missed the right choice in life. I was sure that this woman was really out to frustrate me

Why the hell couldn't she leave me alone? I didn't have the time nor the energy for such rubbish. Instead, I would rather put these people to work.

"Are you done washing that place? Make sure that you don't let me catch you trying to act shady." She yelled again.

I rolled my eyes because I needed to know who this woman was instantly. She was out to draw my blood which I actually did mind. Maybe I should know her name, probably put her in her place but that would be unnecessary huh? I was at war with myself and regretted that I could be having a conversation with myself.

"What are you muttering over there?!" She yelled again and I swear, I felt like pulling out my hair and giving her a piece of my mind if it wasn't for the small ounce of control that I had.

"Nothing, ma'am." I replied, sizing her up. I could easily bench press this woman but I wouldn't. That would be an unfair fight. Also someone would ask. If you knew you were so good when then didn't you try and fight for your freedom.

"Scumbag, head over here!" She yelled again.

If there was another word to describe the annoyance that I felt the instant she spoke those words I was pretty sure that I would have but at the moment, I didn't have any more words to say.

"I'm talking to you knobhead!" She yelled again and I remained in my position daring her to come and take any stupid action while I put her in the place she should have been from the very beginning.

"Are you sure that you don't have something to say?" She inquired when she reached where I was standing. After having to clean up the whole stable sweating like I was in hell, she had the audacity to speak to me in that manner.

"There's a large difference between having to speak and knowing what to say." I replied and she stared at me in total shock. She was so not expecting that sort of response from me but guess who didn't give a rats ass about her, yeah you're right. Me.

"You dare speak to me?!"

"Let the lady be. Why is she even here in the first place?" That man that had come the first day to welcome me spoke and I laughed inwardly at the chaos that it caused in that lady's mind.

She was obviously feeling slighted but I didn't feel sorry for her. I was just an ordinary... I didn't even know what to call myself but I didn't think that their Alpha wanted anything that would connect me to his pack which was quite smart and I wasn't even going to lie about that. It was just so hilarious that one had to go through all of that.

"Follow me." The man spoke and I gladly followed him. He wasn't a soft person from what I had observed but he was more balanced upstairs and isn't acting like the other people.

"You shouldn't do anything that would endanger your life. You're at risk being in the open, once the pack gets the full story, trust me when I say that you are in for a roll. reserve your strength till then, we don't fight small here." He advised.

What did I expect from a pack that was being ruled by such a heartless fellow. " Yes." I replied and ended the conversation.

I caught him assessing me from the corner or his eyes. He was probably wondering what possessed his Alpha to go in search of a girl like me and I think I also shared his sentiments. It was actually overwhelming that there was something such as that bias of size and ability through mere sight.

"Definitely not what I expect but kindly tell me why your parents sold you out to my Alpha." He spoke suddenly, halting in his footsteps, almost causing me to crash into him.

It was one of the most shocking questions that I had ever imagined being asked. "Are you sure that you don't want to check what's happening over there?" I nudged him in the direction where certain people were taking swipes at each other.

It was really a dog eat dog situation here. The fittest survived or nothing else. "Get away from each other right now." He ordered and I felt chills run down my spine.

Now while they were trying to intimidate each other, I was picking up signs and attitudes that could help me become better because in reality, it is actually a very hilarious position where you have to be very sure that you are never surprised.

Being on top required a lot of skill and poise, coupled with a lot of getting oppositions out of the way and making sure that I was free from most of the things that I would normally consider probably exhausting.

It was more of mental strength even more than physical. People needed to know that one was in control and in such cases, I guess it was always hilarious how people would cower in the face of a perceived stronger competitor without bothering to check them out.

"Return to your chambers!" He ordered and they scrammed.

He turned towards me. "It's time for you to meet the Luna." He announced and I froze.
