Dangerous mission

Dangerous mission

BERNARD’S POV

“We were going on a dangerous mission but we had to, for the sake of our pack and its citizens,” I told my brother.

He did not stop eating for a moment like I thought he would. He had acted as though my words made no sense to him, perhaps they did not.

His attitude in the past twenty four hours had been nothing to write home about. I could tell he had something bothering him but he was not willing to speak about it.

“Were you listening to me when I...”

“Go on Alpha Bernard,” he chimed without looking at my face for a second.

“Okay,” I cooed.

He was the only one present in the dining area yet he acted as though his opponents were here with him. He looked like he was ready to fight when there was no one to fight with.

I acted like I was fine but deep down I wanted to know what was wrong with him, this was more than him just waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

“We had to go face the rising coven of witches and we had to do it alone, we were the only ones that could not be affected by their spells.”

He sipped from the glass cup in his hand. My gaze was on him while I waited not so patiently for him to give an answer to my question, he looked like he had something to say.

I did not like how things had been going between us but this was not the best time to address it, we did not even share a room anymore and it felt like we were falling apart.

“That was a brilliant idea but I had other plans already.”

“We could go tomorrow,” I found a solution so I told him about it.

It was selfish of me to just show up at his face and expect him to come with me to face the rising coven of witches. I did not like that he was giving me slow replies but I could do nothing about it.

He dropped the cutlery in his hand and heaved a deep sigh afterwards, it could be of relief. It had begun to seem as though I was the only one interested in fighting for the pack.

I just wanted the storm to be over so we could all move on with our lives and also focus on other things that mattered, like Serena and I having a proper conversation as mates.

“I was not sure you knew but there were other ways the witches could get rid of us without the spells,” he mentioned.

“Was this you being scared?”

“No,” he replied.

He refused to look at my face and it had to be because he was scared of having a change of mind after he saw the look on my face. My wolf asked that I did not raise my voice at him.

This was him being negligent and I could also decide to be negligent. I just did not want the witches taking over the pack from us, we were not even done with the rogues yet.

“We just had to do what we could to...”

“Go ahead,” he cut me off.

“Really?”

“Yes,” he spat.

Not only did he do that, he stood to his feet and was walking out on me. He might pause and come back to me before he was out of my sight, I was hoping it would happen.

How did he expect me to go face them alone? Having him by my side would be a plus and I did not know how to make him see that, he was not even willing to ponder on my words.

“At this point I might as well fold my hands and watch things get worse,” I told Fred.

“I did not think you could afford to let that happen,” he responded.

“What did I do? Face them alone or force Alpha Basil to come with me?”

“If you could do the latter, why not?”

“That was not possible, he was a tough nut to crack and could not be forced to do anything,” I remarked.

My fingers landed on my forehead. I knew what I wanted us to do was risky but I just wanted us to try, the moon goddess might decide to help us out, who knew.

Serena’s scent filled my nostrils and it made me realize she was somewhere here. She had been depressed for days and was not fun to have a conversation with.

I was afraid to tell her the truth because I knew it would hurt her. I did not like to see her sober and if there was something I could do to help Dean, I would have done it a long time ago.

“Dean was as good as dead,” I muttered to my wolf, he knew that already though.

“Why did you not kill him in the woods after he was spelled?”

“Serena was on the spot with us, she would have hated me and called me a killer for getting rid of her brother who was as good as dead,” I explained myself.

If Serena was not there with us, I might have killed Dean and made it look as though he was killed by one of the witches. Having Dean in the mansion was a big risk.

He might find a way to escape from the dungeon even though it was almost impossible to escape from there, spelled werewolves had strength that made no sense.

“Where were you off to?” I inquired after she was done descending the stairs. She had a gloomy look on and I knew why.

“The kitchen.”

“How about you stay here in the dining area and let me get your food?” I asked, this was the least I could do for her.

“I did not want to eat, I was not hungry.”

“Okay, let me grab you a bottle of water or wine,” I said. The reason she wanted to step into the kitchen had to be because of that.

“I was not going into the kitchen so I could eat.”

“Why were you going there then?” I inquired.

“It occurred to me that Dean had not had anything good to eat after since they did what they did to him,” she spoke in a melancholic tone.

She must be trying to hold herself together so she could speak to me. It had begun to show in her appearance that she had not been smiling for days.

There would be no need for what she wanted to do and it was best that I made it known to her now or she would go ahead with it, I still wanted her alive.

“You did not have to take food to him, he would be fine,” I said after clearing my throat.

“Why?”

“He was only hungry for blood, he would not eat or drink anything else,” I replied her.

She looked into my eyeballs, she must be trying to find out if I spoke the truth or lied to her. Since I did not lie to her, I had nothing to be worried about.

If I was lying, she would have been able to hear my heartbeat by now. In return, I also looked into her eyes and all that I was seeing in them made me emotional, one was love.

“If any werewolves showed up at his face to feed him, he would end up feeding on the werewolf instead,” I went on. I needed to sound convincing or she might not believe my words to her.

“I needed to see my brother. I needed to set my eyes on him to see how he was doing.”

“He was safe where he was, trust me,” I said.

She might think I went back to kill him and it was the reason I did not want her to go see him. Even I had not gone to see him because I knew the dangers attached to it.

“If you felt the need to give him food, hand it over to the guards watching over the dungeon. They would know how to get the food to him.”

She acted as though I did not just speak those words to her. She walked out on me and I watched her make her way into the kitchen, was I to go after her?

Another thing she did not know was that if Dean bit her, she would become just like him and might have to remain in the dungeon with him until they both passed away.

“What did I do?”

“You needed to stop asking me for the solution to every problem,” my wolf replied. He made it look as if we had an argument before now, everyone seemed to be in a bad mood today.

I might not be able to stop Serena because it was what she wanted. Dean might be able to recognize her as his sister but he would not be able to stop himself from attacking her.

If he attacked her, it was either he turned her into something like himself or he completely killed her. For me, none of the options were good or even manageable.
