57 - She Wolf

57 - She Wolf
~Frederick’s Point of View~

She could very well be a trap. An attempt to lure me away. My senses tell me the heartbeat is steady, not nervous or anxious. It’s not moving either. I instantly know she’s studying me.

“I mean you no harm,” I whisper, though I know she’d hear it.

My body relaxes slightly, of course not picking up much of a threat. Though I’ve been fooled by females before. Considering I’m still on the property of the Rhodes clan, I absolutely shouldn’t let my guard down.

For whatever reason, I kneel. I don’t know another way to tell her that she can come to me. It’s barely a minute before I hear some movement and when I catch sight of her, maybe a quarter mile away, I simply can’t look anywhere else. Her scent is stronger now but it’s bogged down with grime, dirt. Probably nowhere for her to bathe out here.

It took many decades to be able to get my lycan eyes to work as I needed. To be able to see at night and focus. Lycans use their hearing and their nose for most things, their vision isn’t actually all that important. But now that I too have a wolf, my night vision is damn near perfect. I can see just as good as the daytime, if not better when I’m on two legs.

The she-wolf is a light golden brown, with some hints of orange. She’s incredibly malnourished, and I can’t imagine there’s much out here to eat. I slowly rise and reach in the truck for a couple of apples. I spring a claw from my hand and roughly cut them into several pieces each. I walk halfway between us and lay them on the ground.

“It’s okay,” I whisper.

I barely get back to my original spot before she’s pouncing on the fruit and has it gone in seconds. I continue to kneel, not wanting her to be intimidated by my size.

“Can you shift back sweetheart,” I whisper.

Depending on how long she’s been out here she could very well be feral and if so, her wolf wants to maintain control. Her human may not be strong enough to shift anyhow.

She lightly shakes her head, then stiffens at the sound of the twins waking.

“They’re just boys, it’s okay,” I say, putting my hand out. I rise and reach back in the truck for a bag.

“Be quiet and still, there’s a scared she-wolf out here,” I tell them, as I pop open a can with some little sausages. I barely turn back around when the wolf is just trotting to me. I dump the food in my hand and hold it out to her. She quickly eats, then licks my hand clean.

“Ooooh you like her,” Oscar teases, and Xavier beams. When I move my mouth I realize it’s been stuck with a stupid smile for who knows how long. There is just something about her, something that my body hasn’t felt in decades.

“Maybe she’s why we came out here Freddie! You think she was one of the females that worked here,” Oliver asks. The wolf immediately whines and moves to rub her head against my leg. She’s cold. My wolf and I both hate it, we need to care for her.

I immediately begin to run my hands through her hair. Though she is certainly dirty and weathered, her fur is soft. She visibly relaxes at my touch and when the boys climb out and pet her too, she sits and lets us.

We get her some water and some more to eat. There’s certainly not enough room in the back of the truck for all of us, but the boys surprise me by offering to sleep in the cab. I cover her with the only blanket I have, and tuck her into bed next to me. She falls asleep within minutes, but sleep escapes me. My wolf and I simply can’t stop staring at her.

When morning comes I doubt I’ve slept, at least I don’t feel like I have. The she-wolf is sound asleep, no doubt her first restful night’s sleep in months. When I feel the boys starting to move, I try and adjust myself. The wolf’s eyes dart open in an absolute panic.

“It’s okay,” I say, putting my hands up.

We spend the next hour or so trying to help her shift, but it’s clear it won’t happen right away. There’s just so much I want to ask her and for whatever reason I want to do it here. But it’s obvious the ruins hold no real answers.

“We’re from the Nightwind pack, and that’s where several other females are that came from here. Do you want to come home with us,” I ask, when it’s obvious she’s exhausted from trying to shift.

She nods and I can’t even explain how happy it makes me. Her eyes are so incredibly sad, and all I want is to fix that.

~Two Weeks Later~

I wake with a jolt, and when I look for the wolf that’s usually beside me, she’s gone. I sit up in a panic and clear my mind.

She’s here, I smell her, Xavier insists.

I still have zero idea what I’m doing with this female, but since coming home she hasn’t left my side and the other females claim they don’t know who she is. She’s now the puzzle I need to solve.

The bathroom door is slightly open, the wolf had been using the shower to relieve herself if she needed to before I could let her outside. Parker joked that he could make her a doggie door but I didn’t find that funny. Thankfully Scarlett and the boys have really taken to her, made her feel welcome.

My jaw absolutely falls when I see a human female in the bathtub. She’s got golden brown hair, bright blue eyes and a little button nose. She can’t be out of her teens. Her creamy white skin is certainly a lot more filled out than it would have been had she shifted when I first found her.

My body immediately responds, clearly loving the view. I clear my throat and turn away, trying to give her modesty since the water isn’t at all covering her full chest. I also don’t need her seeing the bulge in my sweatpants. I’m more than old enough to be four generations over her.

“Sorry, I’ll just--”

“My name is Emily, please don’t go,” her soft voice says.

There’s a splash though I don’t turn around, I secretly hope and yet… don’t hope that she’s found a towel. Her soft hand touches my bare back and it sends a pure jolt through me. Xavier practically drools and reminds me I’ve yet to let him feel a female. As if I could forget.

“My father kept me hidden all these years. When the fire started, someone opened the locked door to my room but when I came out, everyone was gone. I ran off, though I had nothing. I waited for everyone to leave and found a small amount of food but then the full moon came and…”

I finally turn to see her and my hand instantly goes to her cheek. Goddess she’s an absolute vision.

“You haven’t seen another person in all these months,” I ask, in surprise. She shakes her head.

“My wolf knew I’d never make it out there on my own so shifting back wasn’t an option but it went on so long I couldn’t do it if I wanted. A few times we ran pretty far away looking for food but… we always ended up coming back,” she says, looking ashamed.

I lean forward and rest my forehead against hers. She blushes and I nearly can’t stand it. I haven’t felt like this in over a century. I… I think I love this female I barely know.

“Mark me? Please. You’re the kindest male and very handsome… and my wolf is in love with you, if you couldn’t tell,” she says, with a small smile.

I pull back and shake my head to tell her that’s silly, that I’m far too old… If she’s been sheltered away her entire life she is no doubt a virgin, never even touched a male. She had to be the daughter of someone very important. But she practically launches herself at me. Once her lips are on mine, the game is over.

She’s our mate, I pick her! Take her to bed and don’t ruin this, Xavier shouts, and I don’t argue.
