Chapter 108 Untitled Chapter
Chapter 108 Untitled Chapter
The entire cavern was smooth and so cold, not even the few candles lit could dispel it.
Rina’s wolf lay on the cold stone table like an offering to pagan gods while the sorceress stood around her with blood running down her fingers and sprinkling into the grooved paths on the table and pooling above the head of the unconscious wolf.
The sorceress chanted and the more she chanted, the more the sconces flickered and the cold grew stronger.
There was hissing coming from the shadows as they clashed and collided, forming a dark, terrifying mass on the floor.
The sorceress’ men gave her a wide berth, instantly sensing that whatever this ritual was, it was dark. Very dark.
The more the sorceress chanted, the more the wind howled both inside and out. Even through the thick, dark walls of the cave. Rina could still hear the thunder as it crashed directly over the head of the cave.
Then just when they thought it was over, suddenly a bolt of lightning, faster than sound, zinged through the small opening on the ceiling and crashed directly into the body of Rina’s wolf with a loud, sick thud.
The wolf jerked up immediately, eyes opened to reveal completely white eyes before letting out the most agonizing howl Rina had ever heard.
It was loud, haunting and even the mercenaries had to hold their hands over their ears. That was how disturbing it was.
“Stop it!” Rina screamed. “Whatever you’re doing to her, stop it right now!”
And just like that it did.
Her wolf stopped screaming and the witch’s arm dropped
Rina panted heavily as she watched her but no matter how long she watched, her wolf just laid there in a pale, lifeless heap.
“I swear to the goddess, if she’s dead, I will..”
The healer cut her off. “Relax, I haven't killed her, at least not yet. If I wanted to, she would already be dead.”
“Then why the hell isn’t she moving?!” Rina demanded
“Because she’s unconscious and will remain so for a while. Have I answered all your questions or is there more?”
Rina’s eyes fixed on her. “Why do you want her unconscious? What exactly are you planning, witch?” She spat the word.
The smile immediately vanished without a trace from her lips and she squatted, gripping Rina’s chin painfully with her fingers.
“A witch? I’m not a witch, Rina. I am many things but not an ugly, old woman with warts on her nose. I am the most powerful being in all the realm. I am the one who will unite the realms. I am the true queen.”
She let go of Rina in disgust and stood.
“Of course I can’t expect simple minds like yours to actually understand. But I guarantee you will. Very soon, Rina. You will all know.”
With those ominous last words, she whispered something into Samorah’s ears before walking up to the altar, her shadows rushing to meet her as if obeying an unspoken command.
Samorah jerked her up, and dragged her closer to the altar. “Watch closely,” she whispered cruelly in her ears. “You don’t want to miss any moment of what is about to happen.”
As soon as she said those words, the healer began the ritual and this time it was ten times worse than before.
The air inside turned darker and the wind howled and groaned like a mother who had lost her wee babe.
The lightning from before was back but stronger now, more violent. It flashed and struck so fast, it made night turn into day.
For a moment it was so bright, every person literally had to turn their eyes away in order to withstand the light and not go blind.
That was when Rina stood unable to sit still any more. She knocked off Samorah’s hand from her shoulder and ran over to where the sorceress stood, preparing to stab the ceremonial knife into the body on the table.
“What the fuck!” The healer screamed. “Someone grab this bitch!”
But Rina wasn’t about to let go of this opportunity. Even with her hands bound, she reached where the knife had clattered to the floor and raised it in a defensive movement.
“Do not come any closer,” she warned. “I won’t hesitate to use this on any of you.”
But even with her threat, they advanced still, calling her bluff. They smirked knowing that even if one of them fell, the odds were still stacked against her. It was fifty to one and she didn’t even have her hybrid powers anymore.
She was powerless.
Samorah realized this and she chuckled, a loud, grating laugh that mocked. “You still haven’t realized it yet, have you Rina? You have no one that is coming to save you. You are all alone and very soon, you’ll be dying alone.”
That’s when a voice spoke.
“No, she won’t.”
For a moment, they all froze before turning to stare in disbelief as the familiar figures of Cain, Frieda, Omaron and the royal palace guards burst into the space.
But they recovered quickly and soon a violently intense fight ensued between the two sides as the hired mercenaries began to battle with the guards, full on wolved out.
It wasn't long before the entire space was filled with wolves, snarling and clawing into one another, blood flowing freely.
Rina didn't linger to say hello to her friends. She would have time to do that later, she hoped. Instead, she took advantage of the distraction to begin to unravel the chain that held her wolf in place on the table.
She dropped the knife to the floor.
Big mistake.
Samorah saw her and instantly rushed to stop her, dragging her back by her hair.
“Just where do you think you’re going to bitch?” She whispered low in her ear as she pressed the edge of the blade into her skin. “I’ve been wanting my time with you. You killed me once. Now it’s my turn. Prepare to die.”
She increased the pressure of the blade, drawing blood that ran down Rina’s neck in thick rivulets.
She tried to gasp, to breathe, but only blood filled her throat.
“Goodbye, Rina. Can’t say I’ll miss you,” she laughed, and prepared to plunge the neck into her side when suddenly time froze.
No one moved, not even the wind. Everyone and everything maintained the same position, eyes wide open but unseeing.
Except for Rina. She could move.
And she could see.
The fast moving ball of light coming straight for her.
