Chapter 70 - Secrets and trust.
Lilith
I gaped at the wolf for a moment. My scream echoed throughout the forest and it felt as if it wasn’t even me! I was about to turn and run when the wolf appeared in front of me. It wasn’t growling or attacking. I felt frozen with fear. The wolf lowered itself and slowly crawled closer until its nose touched my leg. I jumped and gasped.
He closed the gap between us again. Softly pressing his nose against my leg. I breathed in deeply and took the chance. As I scratched him behind the ears, I could see that he was enjoying it. It was weird! Too weird! I pulled my hand back and gaped at the wolf for a little while. He stood up and rubbed up against me and I held my breath.
As if feeling it was too much for me, he disappeared behind the tree and Ezra returned still buttoning his shirt.
“What the hell …”! Who …?! What was that?!” I had lost all my ability to speak! Ezra smiled but made no move to come too close. It was almost as if he was scared, I might run. Dang! I didn’t even know if I was going to run screaming out of the forest! I didn’t know what to say as images of my best friend, her boyfriend and everything else ran through my mind.
How many people knew?! Was Blanca one? She never smelled like a wet dog … I rolled my eyes at the line my thoughts were running it! Wet dog?! Really? We got into the car and Ezra turned to look at me.
“Lilith, I know it’s a lot to take in and I’m going to ask even more of you. You have to keep this a secret. If you don’t, you won’t just be putting your life in danger but a lot of other people’s lives as well.” I nodded. I wasn’t sure anybody would believe me even if I did tell them. I didn’t want Ezra and Blanca to end up in some government facility being experimented on!
Yeah, my mind always went straight to aliens. Now I had even more reason to believe they were real! If werewolves were real, why couldn’t aliens be?! Ezra explained where he, Blanca, and Carlo fit in but didn’t hear half of it. My mind was simply spinning out of control with thoughts of little baby werewolves running amuck in my future home! Chewing on the chairs and whizzing on the carpet!
By the time we pulled up outside my house, I was sitting, staring out the front window and I didn’t even realize we were home. Ezra walked me to the front door and we said goodnight as I walked into my house. I wondered if I needed to invite him in … I was a sci-fi freak and had watched all the movies and shows and they were all rushing to my thoughts in waves of what could happen!
My dreams weren’t much better and when I woke up in the morning, I wasn’t surprised to find Blanca had already called me fifteen times and left me about a million messages. I wasn’t sure if I should call her back and tell her that I knew … I sighed deeply and scrolled for her number, dialing before I could change my mind. After a very quick hello … A very awkward silence fell between us.
“So?” Blanca sounded nervous and I sighed deeply.
“Why didn’t you tell me? You have been my best friend forever and I thought we shared all our secrets. Why didn’t you tell me? I mean, now it makes sense why you were never allowed to invite me over to your house.” I was rambling and I sighed.
“Ezra told you that you can’t tell our secret to anyone, right?” Blanca almost sounded as though she was going to cry!
“Right.” I nodded.
“Okay, so we are allowed to tell one person in our entire lifetime. Only one.” Blanca took a deep breath. “I thought we were both going to go to college and we would lose touch over time. Most people tell their human mates. Like Ezra did. The rest of us don’t tell anyone. It’s just too dangerous for normal people to know our secret.” I nodded, not thinking that she couldn’t see me nodding.
“I mean, I guess I could understand. My first thought was what the government would do to you if they found out about you. Soooo … I guess I understand.” I didn’t really. I would never have told anyone about them! I think. If I was prodded by some alien, maybe I would have spilled the secret … I rolled my eyes.
“Okay, we have a lot to talk about. When can I see you?” I needed to see my friend. Not the beast that lived inside of her. I needed to see my best friend and see for myself that something hadn’t changed since I last saw her. We agreed to meet up at the ice cream shop in an hour and, of course, my parents thought we were nuts to have ice cream so early in the morning, but it was something Blanca and I did whenever we were dealing with a lot.
The sugar always helped, and the time together. I walked to the store and when I saw her, I literally breathed a sigh of relief. I was a little nervous about hugging her, but she pulled me into her arms and I could feel that she was still my best friend.
“Oh, Lil! I’m so happy to see you! I was so scared!” Tears filled her eyes before she quickly wiped them away. We placed our order and found a table in the back. The shop was empty except for us and we could talk to our hearts' content. Nobody would hear us.
“Why were you scared?” I frowned after the waiter brought us our order and disappeared.
“I thought you might see me as a monster. That you wouldn’t ever want to see me again.” Her eyes filled with sadness and it broke my heart.
