Chapter 229 Chapter 229

Kael walked slowly along the edge of the forest that evening. The moonlight fell on the trees, and the cool air carried the smell of damp earth. He had returned only days ago, yet something felt different in the pack. The people were smiling, yes. They were happy that their Luna was with child. But under those smiles, Kael felt another kind of energy—an uneasiness he could not shake off.

He paused, his eyes scanning the shadows between the trees. His senses were sharp, but tonight they felt sharper. Something was moving, something that did not belong. He clenched his fists.

A twig snapped behind him. He turned quickly, only to see nothing but darkness. He narrowed his eyes and whispered to himself, “I know you are there… whoever you are.”

Kael began to walk again, pretending not to notice. But his ears stayed alert, listening to every sound. The rustling of leaves, the soft crunch of footsteps that tried to follow him quietly.

Finally, he stopped and turned sharply. His voice was firm. “Show yourself.”

Silence. Then, a shadow moved quickly between the trees. Kael’s eyes glowed faintly as his wolf stirred inside him. He was ready to fight if needed.

But before he could react, the shadow was gone. Vanished into the thick darkness.

Kael exhaled slowly. He was not afraid, but he knew this was no ordinary movement. It was not a lost guard or a wandering servant. Someone was watching. Someone was spying.

He muttered under his breath, “Lucien… it has to be you or one of your dogs.”

Later that night, Kael entered the pack house. He walked straight to Damien’s chamber where the Alpha sat by the fire. Damien was sharpening a dagger, his eyes deep in thought.

Kael did not waste time. “Damien, I saw something tonight. Someone was following me near the forest. They were quick, too quick to be one of your men. Whoever it was, they vanished before I could catch them.”

Damien looked up sharply, his hand tightening on the dagger. “Are you sure?”

Kael nodded. “I would not come here if I was not sure. It felt like… like eyes watching me from the shadows. And I can bet my life it was not one of our own.”

Damien’s eyes darkened. He set the dagger down and stood. “Lucien. It must be him. He dares to send spies so close to my land?” His voice was filled with anger.

Kael placed a hand on his shoulder. “Listen, Damien. I know your blood is boiling, but we must think. If he has spies this close, then he is planning something bigger. We cannot act blindly. If we do, we may put Elara and the child in more danger.”

The mention of Elara made Damien’s chest tighten. His jaw clenched. “I swore no one would touch her. If Lucien thinks he can take one step inside this land, I will tear him apart.”

Kael gave a small nod. “I know, brother. But let us be wise. Watch closely, move carefully. I will keep my eyes on the forest. If there is another shadow, I will find it.”

Damien sighed, rubbing his hand over his face. He was torn between rage and reason. But Kael’s words made sense.

“Thank you,” Damien said finally. “I trust you. Keep watch. Do not let Elara know yet. She has carried enough fear already. I do not want her heart to break again.”

Kael agreed. “Good. I will speak to Mira too. She is always near Elara. If she sees anything strange, she will tell me.”

Damien’s lips curved slightly. “You seem to care a lot about Mira these days.”

Kael froze for a moment, then gave a small smile. “And what if I do?”

Damien chuckled softly for the first time that night. “Then maybe there is hope for you after all. But for now, keep her safe too. If Lucien’s men are watching, they might target those closest to Elara.”

Kael’s smile faded into seriousness again. “I will. You have my word.”

While they spoke inside, the forest outside was not silent. A figure moved quickly through the trees, cloaked in darkness. The spy who had watched Kael earlier returned to a hidden place deeper in the woods.

There, a pair of glowing red eyes waited. Lucien stood with his arms crossed, his face twisted in anger.

The spy fell to his knees. “My lord… I did as you asked. I watched him. He almost caught me, but I escaped.”

Lucien’s voice was sharp. “Fool. You were careless. If Kael suspected you, then he will tell Damien. And Damien is not a fool. You may have ruined everything.”

The spy trembled, his head low. “Forgive me, my lord. It will not happen again.”

Lucien sneered, his eyes burning with fury. “It will not happen again because you will not live to make another mistake.”

Before the spy could even beg, Lucien’s hand shot out, glowing with a dark light. The man screamed once, and then silence fell. His body dropped to the ground, lifeless.

Lucien spat on the ground. “Weaklings. If I must do everything myself, then I will.”

He turned and looked toward the distant lights of Damien’s pack house. His eyes glowed brighter.

“Enjoy your peace, Damien,” he hissed. “Soon it will burn. You, your Luna, and the child you think will bring you joy—I will crush it all.”

The wind carried his words away, but the darkness held onto them like a promise.

Back inside the pack house, Damien returned quietly to Elara’s chamber. She was already asleep, her hand resting on her belly. He stood there for a long moment, watching her chest rise and fall, listening to the soft sound of her breathing.

He sat on the edge of the bed and whispered, “Sleep, my love. Sleep in peace. I will fight the shadows for you. I will fight them all.”

He leaned down and kissed her forehead. His heart burned with both love and rage.

Lucien was near, but Damien was ready. And this time, he would not wait for the enemy to strike first.
