Chapter 45

Amira’s POV.

The days had slipped by like elusive shadows since Ace's visit, a mere three days had passed. And with almost relentless persistence, Ace had posed the same question each day, a refrain that echoed in my thoughts like a haunting melody – had I, at long last, considered his proposition? There was no denying it; I had dwelled on his offer incessantly, pondering over its intricacies and suggestions. Yet, amidst the whirlwind of my other responsibilities, time had proven both a blessing and a curse. There was barely an ushering moment free for me to accept the proposition.

Now, however, the hour had struck for me to broach the topic with Nikolas. If it were solely his decision, this contentious matter would likely remain untouched, buried under the weight of his protective instincts. But this was a choice that demanded our united consideration, it meant a lot to me and I could get him to understand that.

Over time I had obviously learned everything about Nikolas' schedule, a product of the seamless rhythm that had woven through our lives. Following the conclusion of my classes, I exchanged formal attire for something far more comfortable, the anticipation already building within me. Peering out the window, my eyes found Nikolas amidst the garden, a tableau of determination and exertion as he pursued his personal workout routine. His dedication was inspiring, the bulging muscles of his body glistening with sweat as evidence of the effort he poured into every movement.

A sigh, laced with affection, escaped my lips as I watched him from my vantage point. There was a profound beauty in witnessing him in these solitary workouts. I loved that he trained the kids of our pack, teens and even adults but nothing was a better sight than seeing him work out solo, he spared no mercy on himself and the bulging muscles.

With a gentle shake of my head to banish my thoughts, I grounded myself and descended the stairs. My steps were purposeful, a determined tempo that carried me to the garden, where the flourishing green expanse was illuminated by the radiance of the afternoon sun. It was a scene that felt both intimate and universal – proof of the passage of time that yet again slipped through my fingers.

Approaching Nikolas, I watched him for a moment longer, his movements a mesmerizing dance of exertion and dedication. And then, with a soft clearing of my throat, I announced my presence, allowing my voice to carry the affection that had taken place within me. "Nikolas."

He turned, a sheen of sweat accentuating the contours of his physique, his features morphing from concentration to a warm smile. "Hey there, love," he greeted his words a gentle balm that washed over me.

Drawing nearer, I felt a sense of unity in this shared space. Here, amidst the blossoms and the scent of earth, I began to speak of the offer he had pretended didn’t exist, "There's something I need to discuss," I began, my gaze locked with his, a silent promise of the trust we shared.

The rhythmic cadence of Nikolas' workout came to a halt as he abandoned the exercise in favor of the bench beside me. I watched as he wiped the glistening sweat from his forehead, a subtle smile curving my lips at his diligent dedication. The silent moments stretched between us until his hand found its place on my thigh, the gentle contact a reassurance that I had his full attention. "Go on, my Queen," he encouraged his touch a balm that soothed the edges of my nerves.

With a steadying breath, I embarked on the conversation that had woven itself into the fabric of my thoughts. "You know, the offer Ace extended to us," I began, my gaze never leaving his as I navigated the emotional terrain before me. His expression was a mixture of curiosity and mild exasperation, and I could practically sense his reluctance to delve into this matter.

"You mean the exclusive invitation he extended solely to you?" Nikolas queried an incredulous eyebrow, his arms folding across his chest in a manner that conveyed his skepticism.

Suppressing a playful chuckle, I lightly nudged him. "Don't be so dramatic," I teased, shaking my head. "He knows you'll be coming with me; he wouldn't expect me to journey alone," I reasoned, fully aware that the bond between Nikolas and me was inseparable, especially when it came to matters of such significance. The location Ace had proposed visiting was near the remnants of the Ocean Dawn pack, a place I was eager to share with Nikolas, even in its current state of ruin.

An air of caution crept into Nikolas's demeanor as he assessed the situation, his fingers intertwining with mine as if seeking reassurance. "Amira, I can't ignore my gut feeling about this. There's something about Ace that sets me on edge," he admitted, his grip on my hand tightening as if to emphasize the gravity of his unease.

I gazed into his eyes, the depth of his emotions a witness to the intensity of his concern. "But Nikolas, you heard his story," I countered gently, my free hand reaching out to cup his cheek. "I want to believe him, and I do. Survivors from the Ocean Dawn pack could mean a lot to me," I explained, my voice carrying a conviction that mirrored the faith I had in our ability to discern the truth.

He sighed, his gaze locking onto mine as if searching for an answer within the depths of my eyes. "I know, Ami, but trust is a delicate thing. And we can't ignore the possibility that there might be more to this than meets the eye," he admitted, revealing the extent of his concerns and his struggle to reconcile them with his desire to support me.

A knowing smile played at the corners of my lips as I listened to his admission. "You've had Garett look into him, haven't you?" I quirked an eyebrow, teasing him about his covert investigation. The corner of Nikolas' lips twitched in response, confirming my suspicion without a word.

Nikolas offered a sheepish grin, acknowledging his behind-the-scenes efforts. "We've found next to nothing on him. It's like he's a phantom," he revealed, a hint of frustration evident in his tone.

I allowed my fingers to trail down his arm, the intimacy of our touch grounding us at the moment. "I understand your reservations, Nikolas. But there's something in me that believes Ace's intentions are genuine," I confessed, searching his gaze for a connection as I told him my true harbored dream, This could be an opportunity, not just for me, but for the legacy of the Ocean Dawn pack. I want to rekindle what was lost, to honor my parents' memory."

Nikolas' eyes softened, his fingers caressing the back of my hand with a tenderness that spoke volumes. "And if it makes you happy, my love, then that's all that matters," he murmured, his lips pressing a soft kiss to my cheek.

The warmth of his embrace was a sanctuary, and for a moment, the world faded away, leaving only the two of us, connected by our love and shared dreams. "So, are we going?" I pressed with a hopeful grin, seeking his confirmation.

A wistful sigh escaped his lips as he nodded, his expression a mixture of reluctant acceptance and unwavering support. "I'll rearrange things here so you can make the trip. But, my Queen, understand that I'll be there for the first two days only," he explained, his tone tinged with regret.

I couldn't help but pout, a playful whine escaping my lips. "Five days without you, Nikolas? How will I survive?" I joked though the prospect of being apart from him did tug at my heartstrings.

"You're stronger than you think, my Queen," he teased, wrapping his arms around me, the warmth of his embrace a cocoon of affection.

As we walked hand in hand through the fading daylight, I placed a hand on his shoulder, my touch a gentle reassurance. "Thank you for understanding, for supporting me in this, Nikolas. It means the world to me," I expressed, my fingers grazing his cheek as our eyes met.

His smile was genuine, a reflection of the love that bound us together. "Of course, my love. Your happiness is my priority," he affirmed, his voice carrying the weight of his devotion. With the sun setting on the horizon, casting a warm glow over us, Nikolas and I walked through the garden.
