Chapter 77 A necessary Lie
Alyssa's POV
I stared at Zayne, not sure what I was feeling. "You knew.” I said, it wasn't a question.
The look in his eyes after the girls and I told him our suspicions about Mel and he didn't look surprised…maybe he did but it wasn't at the fact that the information was new but that we figured it out.
“I had my suspicions, especially after the poisoned cake." He replied, “I wanted to get to the end of it before telling you. But then she requested a break."
“Oh my God!" I exclaimed, slapping a hand over my mouth. “Why would she do that?" I asked no one in particular.
Zayne looked at Xavier, then back at me. "She didn't do it, but she knows who did.”
He went ahead to explain what was going on, the warrior, the shooters and the tattoo that they all had in common. And thinking back to the last time we went shopping for lingerie, Mel had been reluctant about testing them on, and the excuse was that she was working and didn't think it was necessary. I couldn't believe I was so blind to all of this.
“Well, we were not expecting someone close to us to betray us.” Nira said.
“Since we know she's working with them, why did you let her go?” Aileen asked, as if reading my mind.
"Because,” he started, standing up. "She's our clue to finding out the mastermind behind it. And if she knows we suspect her, there's a chance that she'll disappear.”
I nodded, "so we're supposed to pretend we don't know she's working with them?”
He nodded, "once we get what we're looking for, we'll take care of her.”
I rested my back against the couch, wondering how quickly everything was changing and how we had no control over it. Before now, our biggest problem was whether I wanted to give Zayne a chance or not and now we have to find people who didn't have anything better to do with their life but plan murder.
"This is getting even more complicated.” Aria groaned, just as the door opened and Tristan entered.
He paused, his eyes landing on Aileen who immediately looked away from him but his gaze remained on her for a few minutes before snapping to Zayne and his dad.
"He's awake, but I'm not sure he's ready to talk.” He said, "and I received several responses concerning the Alphas’ meeting."
Zayne cursed softly under his breath, “I can't believe that skipped my mind." He murmured, running a hand through his hair. “Postpone it…maybe for two weeks. This is more important."
“Yes Alpha." He replied, his gaze going over to Aileen, who pretended not to notice.
He soon left to carry out Zayne's command. Alpha Dorian was the next to leave with the promise to return the next morning to start my training, much to the girls' confusion but they didn't ask.
Soon enough we called it a day to continue the next morning. Zayne had the Omegas bring our dinner to the room, where we ate in silence, his hand caressing mine reassuringly.
“I'm glad your dad came around." I started, once we were done and the plate had been cleared. “Do you think your mom is going to do the same?"
He paused, pulling me into his arms. “My dad coming around is already a miracle, I won't put my mind too much on that happening again."
“The moon goddess might be feeling generous." I murmured, causing him to chuckle quietly, the sound vibrating through me.
He kissed the top of my hair and I moved closer to him, his smell engulfing me. “When all this is over, I'll take you on a date."
“Why wait?" I murmured, “it feels like the only time I get to have you alone is when we're ready to sleep but that's the last thing I want."
I ignored the fact that I was sounding like a child starved of attention because as long as I was getting what I wanted. He thought about it for a few seconds before placing another kiss on my forehead. “Then tomorrow it is." He replied, “I can't say no to you." He added softly.
A small smile appeared on my face and for that moment, I let myself forget about every other thing and just enjoyed being in his arms and soon enough, I was dozing off.
Zayne was gone when I woke up and in his place, there was a note on the one night stand and a tray containing breakfast that was still warm. I took a quick shower and ate breakfast before making my way out of the room. Mel was standing outside and I paused when our eyes met but the discussion from the previous day came rushing back and I offered her a smile that I hoped didn't look fake.
“When did you get back?" I asked.
“About an hour ago, Alpha Zayne said you were still sleeping."
I nodded, murmuring how my body feels like it belongs to someone else. That wasn't a lie but looking at her, I didn't want to believe that she would do something like that. I guess you never really know someone.
“I'm going to see Alpha Dorian now, you don't have to come along."
She frowned, “I thought he doesn't…" she trailed off and nodded, not hiding her confusion.
Without waiting for her to ask whatever she had in min
d, I went towards Zayne's office but soon change my direction.
