Chapter 15 The first breach
Chapter 15-
Zayne's POV
I let out a groan as I watched as Red left the office, before turning to glare at Xavier who wore an apologetic smile. “This better be important.” I warned him.
He nodded, “it is." He replied, coming over to where I sat on the couch. "There was an incident at the borders and I think you might want to see it.”
I frowned, as I took the file from him. Apart from the fact that he was my best friend, he was more than capable of handling a minor incident. I couldn't believe he would interrupt one of the few moments I had with Red.
But that thought soon changed when I took a good look at the file. “How is this possible?” I asked, "are you sure you didn't overlook anything?”
He shook his head, "I had the same thought, but after checking over and over again, it gave me the same result."
What I was staring at seemed strange, a rogue without a trace was unheard of. Besides, with the amount of warriors I have guarding the borders, there was no way they could've escaped except they had someone help them. But my men knew better than to betray me.
“What is going on?" Kael asked and I shrugged, “fuck if I know, but we're going to find out."
I pushed myself upward, walking towards the door. Xavier didn't ask any question as he followed closely behind me. And not long after, we were standing at the borders where the warriors on patrol were. They straightened up once I approached them but I had a mission and their position wasn't a part of it.
“Tell me what happened?" I ordered.
They first looked at one another before one of them decided to talk. Kael was on the edge of ripping the words out of their mouth if he hadn't stepped forward.
He repeated the same thing Xavier had told me word for word and I fought back a groan. I wasn't going to get anything done if nobody saw anything.
“Have you checked the security cameras?" I asked again, and just like the first time, they looked at each other again. “Hurry the fuck up." Kael growled, and that did it as they all scrambled around, looking for what was supposed to be placed in the most obvious place in case of times like this.
“We'll deal with this later.” I muttered underneath my breath but I knew they heard me because their face paled.
Pushing them aside, I focused on the iPad that showed the videos of everything that went on at the borders but no matter how many times I went over it, nothing felt out of place, causing my frown to deepen.
“These are not rogues," I said, and Xavier nodded.
"They knew exactly what they were doing, and what to avoid.” He said, "like they had fore knowledge of how everything worked.” He added, and my gaze met those of the warriors who stood frozen in one spot.
Several thoughts went through my mind. Nothing like this has ever happened before…until Red. My hand formed a fist just thinking about the possibility of whatever this was being related to her.
“We're not going to let anything happen to her…not this time.” Kael said, more like promised and I agreed. "I'd rather die than let anyone harm her.”
I already made that mistake once, I sure as hell wasn't going to watch it happen again. Not when for some reason, I felt like I couldn't breathe properly if she wasn't close, like there was nothing I wouldn't do for her.
“Increase the warriors at the border," I commanded, “and report any strange movement to me."
"Yes Alpha,” they chorused, determination flashing across their faces.
For a brief moment, I was reminded of Nyra, how nothing I did could save her. And how over the years, I blamed myself…only if I had taken the little signs like this more seriously, maybe she wouldn't have died.
“Alpha," Xavier called, and I hummed.
I didn't have to say anything before he figured out what was going on through my mind.
“We're going to find them." He assured me, and I nodded absentmindedly.
"Dig into the man from the mall…I want to know everything about him. I need the report as soon as possible." He nodded, as we turned to return back to the pack house.
“Unrelated, but when do you think Tristan is going to return? He's been gone for a while."
Tristan was the gamma, but was also our best friend, who was touring other packs in search of his mate. “Whenever he chooses to return," I started, “he has a lot of work waiting for him.” I added, and Xavier chuckled lightly before excusing himself to go get started on the report.
Once I got back to my office, I swung the door open, expecting to see Red…hoping she'd returned while I was out, but instead, it was empty, just like my life before she stumbled into it.
For a split second, the thought that she had been taken by whatever was out there crossed my mind, and I couldn't feel anything as I dashed out of the office again. But I had barely taken two steps when I ran into Xavier, who immediately looked around for any sign of danger.
I hated not being able to mindlink her or feel her as her wolf was just recovering.
“I can't find Alyssa, what if…”
He didn't let me finish, "She's with Aria, they should be on their way now.” He said, and I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
I ran a hand through my hair, "fuck!” I cursed, "at this rate, I think I'm going to lose my mind.”
Xavier smiled, like actually smiled. "It's nice knowing you still have a heart…that actually works.”
"Shut the fuck up,” I murmured.
He didn't, he just laughed. Before I could ask him why he was here, instead of his office, lavender filled my nostrils and I looked up to see her. A low growl escaped my lips, as my eyes landed on her hand that was wrapped around…Tristan.
She hadn't seen me yet, which was good as I was seconds away from biting off my best friend's head.
“Mine!" Kael growled.
"You don't want to scare her off, do you?” Xavier asked, and Kael immediately retreated to the back of my mind, the same time Tristan met my gaze and let go of her hand.
She was definitely going to be the death of me and she had no idea.
