Chapter 254: This Isn't Over. Not By A Long Shot.

If I could capture him with my pack members surrounding him last time, why not this time?
We entered the cave in single file, our footsteps echoing strangely in the enclosed space.
The tunnel twisted and turned, leading us deeper into the hillside than we'd imagined. After walking for several minutes, the narrow tunnel opened into a massive underground chamber.
I swept my flashlight around, trying to understand what I was seeing. This cavern was enormous—easily the size of my house's great hall. But what was truly bizarre was that it seemed to exist in two different realities.
Half of the cave looked like a natural formation—rough stone walls, mineral deposits, the kind of thing you'd expect to find underground.
But the other half looked almost... civilized. Smooth stone floors, carefully carved walls, even what appeared to be the remains of furniture.
"Alpha," Connor's voice was tense and tight. "Look at this."
He was standing near the center of the chamber, his flashlight trained on something on the ground. I hurried over to see what had caught his attention.
It was Orion, but not quite what I'd expected.
The massive lycan was lying on his side on what looked like a flat stone slab, his body still in that weird hybrid form.
At first glance, he seemed unconscious, breathing deep and regular. But as I got closer, I could see the wounds.
Three deep gashes across his chest, still bleeding slowly but not like fresh injuries.
Definitely claw marks, but not from an ordinary werewolf. These wounds were too precise, too deep, and made by something with much larger claws than Orion possessed.
"Is he alive?" Ethan asked quietly.
I knelt beside the stone slab, careful not to get too close to Orion's claws. His pulse was steady, his breathing showed no signs of distress. Whatever had happened to him, he was stable for now.
"Yeah, he's alive. Unconscious, but alive." I examined the wounds more carefully. "These claw marks... they're too big to be from a werewolf. Too precise to be from an ordinary wild animal."
"Then what made them?"
That was the question, wasn't it? What kind of creature had claws this large, capable of leaving marks like this on something as powerful as Orion?
And why had it left him alive instead of finishing him off?
I stood up, sweeping my flashlight around the rest of the chamber. Now that I was looking more carefully, I could see signs of a struggle. Chunks of stone had been torn from the walls, and the floor near where Orion lay seemed to have scorch marks.
"We need to get him out of here," I finally said. "Back to the dungeon where we can lock him up. Then we need to figure out what the hell this place is and what attacked him."
"Should we investigate the rest of the cave first?" Connor asked, though his tone suggested he wasn't particularly eager to explore further.
I considered it, but the rational part of my mind was already calculating the risks.
We were deep underground in an unknown cave system with an unconscious lycan, who could wake up at any moment.
And there was something else here—something powerful enough to wound Orion and then let him live.
"No. We get him out first, then come back with a full team and proper equipment." I bent down to grab one of Orion's thick arms. "Help me lift him."
Between the two of us, we managed to get Orion's unconscious body into a position where we could drag him out of the cave.
He was incredibly heavy—probably close to 300 pounds of solid muscle—but adrenaline and werewolf strength made it manageable.
As we made our way back through the tunnel, I found myself constantly looking over my shoulder.
The feeling of being watched was almost overwhelming, even though my senses told me we were alone. Whatever had attacked Orion was gone for now, but I had a clear feeling it would be back.
By the time we emerged from the cave, Rake had been joined by three other pack members who'd been searching nearby.
They immediately rushed to help us handle the unconscious Orion, and we managed to get him secured with heavy chains before he showed any signs of waking.
"Take him straight to the reinforced dungeon," I ordered. "Double the usual restraints. And post sentries—I want someone watching him at all times."
As the team headed back to the pack compound with our unconscious prisoner, I found myself staring at the cave entrance. The dark opening seemed to pulse in the moonlight, like a mouth breathing.
What the hell is that place? What lives in there?
I made a mental note to organize a proper expedition as soon as we dealt with Orion.
Whatever secrets that cave held, I had a feeling they were connected to everything that had been happening to our pack.
And somehow, I suspected Orion wouldn't be unconscious long enough for us to get the answers we needed.
At least for now, we have him locked up again. Maybe when he wakes up, he'll be willing to tell us what the fuck happened in that strange underground chamber.
Assuming he survived whatever attacked him and can remember any of it.
Just then, I received a mind link from Rachel, telling me to get back to the Alpha House immediately. My heart raced—was something wrong at the Alpha House?
But Orion had just been captured by me. Could it be that unknown creature?
Then Rachel clarified that it wasn't exactly an 'attack' on her house, but that someone had left threatening messages inside her home.
Hearing that there was no immediate danger and that the Alpha House was safe, I told her I'd just captured Orion and was on my way back. I'd be there soon. Then I shifted and ran toward the Alpha House.
This isn't over. Not by a long shot.
