Chapter 253: A Mysterious Cave

Chapter 253: A Mysterious Cave
Dominic

The moon hung high above us when we finally decided to call off tonight's search.

We'd covered every inch of our territory and far beyond our borders, following scent trails that led nowhere, investigating every possible hiding place we could think of.

Where the fuck is he?

Orion had vanished like smoke, leaving no trace behind. He'd just disappeared without a damn clue.

The main issue was that Damian had gone back—he said he was worried about Rachel's safety.

This was because I'd mind-linked with Ethan to ask if everything was okay at the Alpha House, and Ethan said everything was fine, then mentioned that Rachel might go back to her own house to grab some things.

But he wasn't sure if she'd actually go.

When Damian heard this news, he got really worried. But at that point, Rachel hadn't left yet.

So Damian and I continued searching for a while longer.

Damian's ability to track the lycan's scent had failed completely—I don't know what kind of magic Orion used to mask his trail.

From my perspective, I couldn't smell Orion at all. Only Damian could. But Damian seemed distracted, and he said he couldn't pick up the scent anymore either.

I told him helplessly that if he was really that worried, he could choose to go back and check, and while he was at it, make sure Avery and the twin pups were safe.

Then Damian left with a worried expression on his face. It would take him some time to get from the deep forest at the pack border back to the Alpha House, and we continued searching.

"Alpha," a warrior named Connor called out, jogging toward where I stood at the forest's edge. "Rake thinks he might have found something, but he wants you to take a look before investigating further."

I nodded, grateful for any lead, no matter how slim. "Take me to him."

We pushed through thick underbrush, following Rake's scent trail to a part of the forest I rarely visited.

The trees here were more densely packed, their canopy so thick that barely any moonlight penetrated to the forest floor. The place felt ancient, untouched by human or werewolf civilization.

Rake stood beside what appeared to be a steep rock face, partially hidden behind dense vines and thorny bushes.

But as we got closer, I could see there was something behind the vegetation—a dark opening in the stone.

"I've been patrolling this area for three years," Rake said, his voice tight with confusion.

"This cave has always been overgrown, blocked by brambles and thorns. We never bothered investigating because there was no way through."

I studied the opening carefully, noticing that the vegetation covering it had been cleared away.

The thorns looked like they'd been recently cut or torn away, and there were clear signs that something massive had forced its way through.

"But when I passed by here tonight, all the thorns were gone," Rake continued. "Like someone—or something—cleared them out from the inside."

From the inside.

The implication sent a chill down my spine. If something had cleared the entrance from within the cave, that meant it had been trapped in there for who knows how long. If Orion had found this place...

"Has anyone explored this cave?" I asked, though I was pretty sure I already knew the answer.

Rake shook his head. "Not that I know of. Those thorns were there before I even joined the pack. Most of us assumed it was just a shallow cave, not worth the effort to clear the entrance."

I approached the opening cautiously, my enhanced senses on high alert. The entrance was larger than it appeared from a distance—easily big enough for something as massive as Orion to pass through.

But what made my skin crawl was the smell drifting out from deep within the cave.

Orion had definitely been here. His scent was fresh, maybe just a few hours old. But there was something else, something that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

The cave didn't smell empty. It smelled... lived in. Like something had been dwelling inside for a long time.

"Get me a flashlight," I commanded, though my werewolf vision was good enough in the dark. I needed backup lighting in case we found anything in there.

Connor handed me a heavy tactical flashlight, and I switched it on, sending a beam of light deep into the cave. What I saw made me suck in a sharp breath.

The cave was much larger than any of us had anticipated. The flashlight beam illuminated a tunnel that extended into the hillside, growing wider the deeper it went. But that wasn't what caught my attention.

The walls were covered with markings. Not natural rock formations or mineral deposits, but deliberate carvings that looked ancient. Symbols and patterns that seemed to dance in the shifting light of my flashlight.

"What the hell is this place?" Connor whispered beside me.

I didn't answer immediately, too focused on the information my enhanced senses were feeding me. The air inside the cave was stale but not stagnant, suggesting there were other entrances and exits somewhere deeper in. And that smell... it was older. Much older.

This place has been inhabited before. Recently.

"We're going in," I decided, even though my instincts were screaming that this was a bad idea. "But carefully. Rake, you stay here and guard the entrance. If we're not back in thirty minutes, go for backup."

"Alpha, maybe we should wait until morning, or bring Damian and the Beta—" Connor started.

"No." My voice cut off his protest with Alpha authority. "Orion is in there. I can feel it. If he's been hiding here this whole time, we need to know what we're dealing with."

I was fairly confident in my fighting abilities.
