Chapter Ninety
Alpha Reginald
I paced back and forth in my chamber, hands clasped behind me. Beckett hadn't reached out to me about how everything was going. I needed to know so I could set my men in action. The more time we wasted, the riskier it could be. I couldn't afford to take any chances. It had been five days since we last talked, and yet no word from him – not a single word.
I wondered how Killian was doing there, all alone.
"So," my shoulders tensed as I heard her voice from behind. The door closed, and Evelyn stepped in further. "Have you figured out how to get Killian out from there?"
I clenched my jaw and acted like I hadn't heard her.
"Reginald, I am talking to you!" She barked, and I shut my eyes before spinning around in anger to face her. "You think it's easy?" I spat flatly, cutting her off. Evelyn flinched, and then her face snapped into a twisted scowl.
"Killian is there… Our son is there, all alone in the cold, in pain, and surely in torture!"
"He's also my son!" I yelled before lowering my tone. "I'm trying. I am trying to figure out how to get him out of there."
"You are still figuring it out?" Evelyn asked, disbelief flashing in her dull red eyes.
She hardly slept these days, and the same went for me. I hadn't had a restful night since I lost contact with Killian.
I dragged in a slow breath and muttered, my gaze unwavering.
"You think it's easy to get Isabella out of the Nightshade pack? She is Alpha Valerio's mate!" I reminded her.
Alpha Valerio was a beast – young but a hard rock to mess with. Someone even Alpha Lucius was afraid of, though he might pretend otherwise. A single Alpha that other Alphas were careful not to fall into his bad side was what Evelyn expected me to easily get his mate within the space of a day.
That was ridiculous.
Not like I didn't want to, but it was damn impossible.
More of the reasons, I couldn't even tell her about Beckett- our little secret. If Evelyn gets to finld out, it would be an issue because she'd focus on it until it got out, potentially to someone who shouldn't know.
She snorted, her gaze cold and furious. "I don't care how you do it, but you have to get that girl, Isabella, to Lucius fast." She spat out the name like it was a disgusting thing. "You need to save our son!"
"Stop pressuring me, Evelyn!" I growled, my fists clenched at my sides. "I am trying my best."
"Then try harder!" My sharp gaze snapped at her, silencing her instantly.
I could feel my wolf growling in my head; he was getting restless, and her words were getting to him and me as well. She didn't have to make me look worthless, like I didn't know what I was doing.
Killian was not just her son but my son – our son! The next in line to claim the Alpha position after me, my only son, so there was no way I'd abandon him there.
I was just trying to be strategic, to come up with something without risking ourselves out there.
Evelyn then crossed her arms again, her brows snapping together. "Assuming you had ended that thing back then, we wouldn't be in this mess." She snapped, her voice cracking.
"Killian should have been here with us today, and not in the damn Nightshade pack."
She was right.
I should have ended it back then.
I gulped, my jaw clenched so tight that it ached.
And then, a knock at the door interrupted us before it was pushed open. I quickly lifted my head, my attention drawn to the doorway, where Edward stood.
"Alpha," he bowed to me, and then to Evelyn. "Luna." He greeted and raised his head. "The beta of the Black Moon pack is here to see you."
He hadn't finished speaking when Stefano stepped inside the room.
I froze.
Immediately, Evelyn's smirk returned, as if his presence would help save the day. But I knew his presence was far from that.
"It's nice to meet you again, Alpha Reginald," he said, his tone brusque and his face blank.
He stopped in the middle of my room, a few steps from where I was standing.
Then he strengthened himself and released a deep breath. "I'm here for some inquiries, Alpha Reginald."
There was a sudden silence. I slowly nodded at Edward and then at Evelyn beside me. "Please excuse us. I need to be left alone with Beta Stefano."
Edward nodded. "Okay, Alpha." But Evelyn scoffed and rolled her eyes at me before storming away. I noticed Stefano smirking at the scene. Once she was out, Edward bowed for the last time and shut the door behind him.
And now we were alone.
The air seems to thickened. The atmosphere was charged with tension. I gulped hard and allowed the bad energy to swallow me up.
"What brought you here, all the way from Black Moon pack?" I said, rounding the desk in my room to sit on the chair.
"Let's cut the small talk and get to why I'm here, Alpha Reginald," his voice was abrasive, causing my eyes to snap up at him.
"Have you gotten her yet?" He arched his eyebrow, and I opened my mouth and then shut it instantly, unsure what to say.
"I will take that as a no." He let out a small, sharp chuckle and stepped forward. He stopped in front of my desk and bent over, his two hands grasping the edge of the desk, and his expression hardened. "The more you delay, the worse it might get for you." I swallowed the sudden hard lump.
"I am working on that. Tell Alpha Lucius that I am working on that."
From the corner of my eyes, I noticed him smirked, his lips curling up in a mock. "None of our business. You aren't doing us a favor, but we are doing it for you. Get her and hand her to my Alpha, and he will make Alpha Valerio release your son!" he said before hissing out, his voice threatening and frightening. "Mind you, if we first get her, kiss goodbye to us helping you."
A sudden chill coursed down my spine, and I nervously stared back at him, my throat tight.
Even if I got Isabella, I still needed him. I couldn't face Alpha Valerio on my own. I couldn't afford to lose Alpha Lucius by my side at this critical moment.
"Just give me time,"
As I gulped hard, fighting back my strained voice, Stefano's eyes seemed to bore into my soul. "I will definitely get her," I promised, trying to sound convincing.
But that only widened his smirk. "We'll see about that," he said, his voice dripping with skepticism as he leaned back.
Stefano took some steps back and I swallowed my saliva, forcing some air into my lungs. I have to meet up with Beckett fast.
I instantly mind linked Edward.
"Arrange for a meeting with Beckett." I said, watching as Stefano walked out of the door.
