Chapter 146 Worries About the True Heir
Chapter 146 Worries About the True Heir
The news that Orson, Fergus, and Arlington had been taken down brought euphoria to the Davenport pack. I was grateful that there were no casualties, and most of the pack members from the three alphas decided to surrender.
They had sworn allegiance to Elijah. I felt a tremendous sense of relief.
"We have already made plans to attack the palace in a few days. The rogue wolves have attempted small attacks several times, but we've been able to handle them," Jeremy reported over the phone.
"That's great. Thanks for the update, Jeremy."
"Hold on, Deli. Elijah wants to talk to you."
My excitement grew. Then I heard Elijah's deep, sexy throat clearing.
"Delilah?" he called.
"My king."
"I am so glad to hear your voice." He sighed softly and whispered, "I miss you."
A shiver ran through me, making me long for him even more. "Me too."
"Jeremy said you should be waiting at Arlington's residence when we attack the palace. I don't understand why he wants that. Doesn't it sound too dangerous?"
I was silent for a moment. Jeremy hadn't mentioned this to me either. He had only said that I would ascend to the throne when Wanda was overthrown.
Did Jeremy mean that I should announce my true identity right away?
"Delilah?"
"Oh, I didn't know that. Jeremy didn't tell me anything." I cleared my throat. "I'll wait for him to explain. If I need to be there, I'll come."
"Well, honestly, I'm worried about you coming here. The situation is getting more and more chaotic. But Kat and Flo are here too—they can protect you. Should they come to Pinecrest instead?"
Kat and Flo? Were they safe? Thank the moon goddess.
"I will abide by Jeremy's decision, my king. After all, he's the one who protected me all this time."
Even though I was technically part of Elijah's pack, and he was my Alpha, I would have my own pack once I revealed who I was. Even the royal pack would have to submit to me.
"Alright. I'll wait for you here if Jeremy decides you should come."
"See you soon, my king."
The call ended, but my unease grew. I wondered how Elijah would react when he found out I was the true heir to the Crescent Moon.
I rushed downstairs to find Aunt Disa. She was in the kitchen cooking with some other wolves. When she saw me, she immediately stopped chopping potatoes and approached me.
"What is it, Deli?" Aunt Disa asked.
"Jeremy just called. So did King Elijah."
"And?"
"Jeremy wants me to go to Alderwood soon. Although it was King Elijah who told me."
Aunt Disa gasped in shock. "For what? Isn't the situation there still unstable? Many areas are still controlled by rogue wolves, especially the palace."
"I don't know, Auntie." I shrugged. "But it seems like Jeremy wants me to take the throne as soon as the palace falls. Maybe he doesn't want to give the royal wolves a chance to claim it."
"You mean King Elijah?"
"Well, probably. After all, King Elijah was the reigning king, right?"
Aunt Disa sighed, worry written all over her face. "Deli, you have to be careful. I don't think Elijah will turn against you - of course not - but the other royal wolves..."
"Don't worry, auntie. I think Jeremy wants me to be there so that everything is clear, and his supporters—those who aren't royal—can back me up."
"Ah, yes, yes! Jeremy really does look out for you."
Jeremy had been nothing but kind to me. But I couldn't give him my heart; I was sure he knew that. Our bond was just friendship now, though I wasn't sure when he would fully accept that.
"I should get ready. Jeremy could ask me to leave at any moment," I said.
"Alright. And don't worry about the twins. We'll take care of them."
"Thank you, Aunty."
The next morning, the guards drove me to Alderwood. Jeremy didn't waste any time, and I had to leave immediately. I felt uncomfortable lying to Elijah - it felt like a betrayal. But I had promised to keep quiet.
Until the time was right to reveal everything.
In the afternoon, I arrived at Arlington's residence, which had been transformed into a base camp for both royal and non-royal wolves to fight together. The place was buzzing with activity, with tents pitched everywhere for rest. The atmosphere of war was thick in the air.
When I exited the car, Kat and Flo came to greet me. I was overwhelmed with joy that they were safe, tears mixed with sadness and relief. If I had saved Nana, Cassie, and Gema, maybe they would have been here with me now.
Elijah was waiting at the entrance. He looked incredibly handsome in a white shirt and beige pants. His hair was still damp, and he smelled fresh soap, making me want to melt right there.
Without saying a word, Elijah pulled me into his arms. But I could feel his relief in that simple hug.
"You didn't bring the cubs?" Elijah asked.
"To a battlefield?" I gave him a sharp look. "That's no place for babies."
"Yes, you're right. But I miss them."
"You can see them when this war ends, my king."
"I hope I get that chance."
I stopped in my tracks and studied Elijah. Why did he say that?
"Is something wrong, my king?" I asked.
Elijah shook his head, then took my arm and led me to my assigned room. Kat and Flo put my suitcase inside before leaving with smiles on their faces.
Oh, for heaven's sake. Nothing will happen between me and Elijah.
Maybe... just a little kissing and cuddling, but nothing more. We were in the middle of a war. No time for distractions.
Elijah sat on the edge of the bed, the worry finally showing on his face. I sat next to him, holding his hand. Something was clearly troubling him.
"My king?" I asked.
"Deli. If anything dangerous happens, you must leave here—leave Pinecrest if necessary. Okay?"
"What's wrong, my king?"
"It's not that I don't trust Jeremy, but Elena wouldn't lie either."
I stiffened.
"Yes, Elena is being held here. Even Eugenia is here; she's helping the wolves prepare for war. But let's focus on what Elena said," Elijah continued.
"What did she say?"
"That the non-royal wolves have been planning for a long time to bring forth the true heir of Crescent Moon, the true queen. Camden tried to cover it up by making Wanda a false queen. Camden wanted the real queen to appear so he could eliminate her.
My lips went dry. So...?
"But Camden's plan failed. And now that we've overthrown Wanda, there's a good chance that this heir will step forward. If she turns out to be just as cruel, you must run. Take the cubs and go."
Oh, I wanted to tell Elijah the truth. But I couldn't.
"We don't know what will happen if the wolves take control. Even Jeremy could change," Elijah added.
"My king, don't put too much stock in Elena's words. What if the queen never meant to hurt anyone?"
