Chapter Sixty

Chapter Sixty
I couldn’t wait for morning to reach before heading to Darius’s lodge.

I waited for Darius, but it was getting late, and he hadn't come by as promised, so I changed my clothes and went to him, using my scent to track him.

I opened the door and discovered he was in the bathroom.

I sank onto the edge of the mattress and waited, heart beating wildly.

He had to know; if not, I had no idea what else I would have to do to get the necessary information if he wasn't aware of the exact path they were taking.

He was pleasantly surprised when he came out and saw me.

“I couldn't be sure if I was imagining you or you're actually here,” he said as he swapped the towel for a pair of shorts.

I swallowed.

And then remembered why I was here.

“Darius, Lucian said they found Zareen’s son. And they’re preparing to attack. You know who that is.”

“Of course,” he nodded, coming closer to sit on the bed with me. “Clever tactics by whoever helped you escape. They'll never know he's such a pretty woman with soft, luscious lips.”

“Come out of your head,” I swatted his hands away, “I think he’s found the hideouts of the remaining dark wolves.”

He jolted upright. His expression went blank, like everything inside him shut down at once.

“He told me we’re going somewhere in three days,” he said. “And he wants the elite warriors ready.” His voice dipped. “Do you think he’s starting to suspect me?”

“Why would you think that?”

“He usually tells me everything,” he whispered, almost to himself. “Why hide this? Why now?” His hand raked through his hair. “I need to return this Alpha power.”

“You think that's going to change anything?”

“Yes. Maybe he feels off with a fellow Alpha in his ranks.”

“How are you gonna do that? It didn't end well the last time.”

“I need to head to Lucian’s office after training, and this time, I'll give it to him without hesitation. Hopefully, he tells me more and I'll get back to you, okay?”

I nodded, but somehow, I doubted the problem was solved, and time was not on my side.

He didn't tell him.

Although he looked less strained, but there was still a crease in his eyes.

So I knew it was time to take matters into my own hands.

I stepped into Lucian’s office, and he was leaning against the edge of his desk with a file in hand. He turned when he heard me, and I almost melted on the spot. His shirt was unbuttoned halfway on his chest, and the way his eyes fixed on mine made my knees buckle.

He dropped the file back to the table and walked closer to me, his hands lifting to cup my cheeks, and the warmth of his palms sent chills racing down my muscles.

I dragged in a shaky breath, trying to pull myself together, reminding myself why I had come here in the first place. Before I could lose my resolve again, I stepped away from him and crossed to the chair by the table.

I heard the soft shift of movement behind me. A moment later, his hands brushed my shoulder; the kind of touch that made your skin prickle.

Then he leaned in, his lips grazing my ear.

“How are you feeling now? You left me so abruptly yesterday, and I fear I might have pushed you too far.” He asked, a quiet rumble in his tone that sent shivers running down my spine.

“I’m better… thank you. And it was nothing, I was just a bit exhausted,” I replied, shaking my head slightly to pull away from his touch. He pressed a quick kiss to my neck before he stepped back toward the other side of the table.

“But something has been bothering me, Iris. We were having such a great time before we got back home. Why were you angry? I just want to know so it doesn't happen again.”

I bit my lip, trying to convince myself my anger hadn’t shown.

“I wasn’t angry,” I lied, “Darius was watching us and I had to pretend.”

His eyes narrowed, jealousy looping in with sadness.

“You're my mate too, doesn't he realize that?”

“One that you rejected, remember?”

He made a painful grunt in his throat and stood up, walking towards the coffee machine.

Silence reigned as he worked it, and I tried to gather my thoughts.

Everything was going haywire.

He brought it over to me and handed it.

“I think we should spend more time together. I want to know everything about you, what makes you smile, how you love your coffee, the way your face curves when you cum.”

The cup shook in my hand, and the hot liquid spilled on my chest.

“Shit!” He apologized as though it was his fault I couldn't keep my mind under control.

Well, it was his fault, but then…

My cheeks flushed as I cursed under my breath.

Before I could reach for a napkin, he got one already, his hands hovering over mine, dabbing at the mess with careful precision. The button of my shirt loosened in the process, and suddenly, the space between us shrank. He leaned closer, lips just inches from mine. My heart hammered in my chest, my pulse racing as I tried to think of anything but him. But his eyes were in mine, his scent drowning my mind, and his chest…

Fuck!

“Can I join you? You know? For the attack?” I blurted, instantly regretting the words as soon as they left my mouth.

He drew back, eyes fixed on me, sharp and suspicious. His hand lifted, brushing a stray strand of hair from my face.

“You don’t want to go through that kind of stress,” he said softly, a quiet warning in his tone.

“Because I’m a woman, or because you think I’m not strong enough?” I snapped, swatting his hand away.

“I never said that,” he replied, his voice calm but firm. “You haven’t faced anything like this before. These are dark wolves, and they’re dangerous. You haven’t even seen one up close.” He went back to his seat, eyes still on me.

“I can, and I want to,” I pressed, my pulse racing. “I feel useless in the pack if all I do is sit around.”

“You can join Suzy; there are things to do in the pack. I don’t want you getting hurt,”

“That’s how you see me? Is that how you see women? We’re meant for the kitchen? Weak and used for keeping your balls empty?” I shot back, my chest tightening, my hands clenching into fists.

I liked that I finally got hold of my body. I hadn’t even gotten the answers I needed, and I hoped this argument would lead to more information. For now, all I knew was that in three days, they were going after the dark wolves.

“I’ve read about them… I know what they’re capable of. I want to go with you,” I pressed.

“Why are you so interested in this?” he asked, his voice low, curious but cautious.

“I've told you already. I'm just disappointed to find out you're just like these cocky alphas that treat women like crap!”

I clenched my jaw, my hands trembling slightly. I stormed out of the office before I said something I’d regret, the weight of unanswered questions and my sexual frustration burning in my underwear.

My pussy was literally dripping as I stormed off the office, and I headed towards Darius's house. I met him at the door about to leave.

“How did it go?” he asked as I approached. I passed him, pushing the door open, he followed immediately.

“Did he say anything that –”

I let the word hang on his lips as I slammed him against the wall, my hand hastily pulling his pants.
