Chapter 56 Safe Place
Chapter 56 Safe Place
I let myself relax, holding onto what Aiden had said about the pups being okay. At a point, I felt like standing up to check on them myself, but I was far too weak to leave the bed.
I closed my eyes, allowing myself to breathe. The thought of Layla filled my mind. Now that my pups were born, if she ever found out about them, she would definitely try to kill them.
I had to keep their birth a secret. I remained lost in my thoughts for a while, the ache of Layla's betrayal hitting me like a painful blow I could never forget.
The sound of the door opening got my attention, and I turned my head to see a woman with gray hair walk in alongside Gina.
"Wow, you didn't tell me she was this beautiful," the gray-haired woman said as they walked over to my bed.
I shifted a little, wondering who they were as I stared at them. Gina walked up to where I was sitting at the edge of the bed. "Hey, hope you're feeling much better now."
I nodded without saying a word, my gaze fixed on the older woman.
"You're going to be fine," the woman said with a warm smile. "Gina told me about your pups, and she also mentioned that you're a friend of Aiden."
"Yes," I mumbled, my voice soft and weak. "Please, can I see my pups? I need to see them... please let me see them."
"You will, my dear," the woman said with a sympathetic look. "Aiden is with them right now. He went to check if they're doing okay."
The woman sat down on the couch opposite my bed. "Your mate must be really good looking, because those pups are the most adorable little things I've ever seen."
I lowered my gaze the moment she mentioned my mate. The thought of Warren being with Layla, and the fact that she had sent those wolves after me to end my life, made me suddenly wish Warren wasn't my mate at all. Maybe my fate would have been completely different.
If he had just been some random guy, Layla wouldn't have seen the need to do all the terrible things she had done.
"What's going through your mind?" Gina asked, leaning in to look at me closely. "You look worried and scared about something."
"I heard Aiden found you in the woods almost dead, and he said you were chased by rogue wolves," the woman said, watching my face. "Is your mate aware of this, or..."
"I don't have a mate," I mumbled softly.
I realized that if I told them Alpha Warren was the father of the pups, they would likely pass a message to his pack. If that happened, Layla would find out I was still alive.
"So how did you get pregnant?" Gina asked, giving me a look that clearly showed she didn't believe a word I said.
"Gina, go check on Carla to see if the food is ready," the woman said, turning her head toward Gina, who was still staring at me with deep curiosity. "Go on, now."
Gina hesitated, exchanging quick eye contact with the woman before she finally turned and left the room. Once she was gone, the older woman stood up, walked over to the bed, and took the spot where Gina had been standing.
"I don't know what happened to make you carry pups without a mate," she said, staring down at me gently. "But I want you to know that you are safe here. If you need someone to talk to, I am right here."
I gave her a weak, quiet smile. "Thank you. Please... can I see my pups now? I just want to hold them and see what they look like."
"You will see them, but not right now," the woman said softly. She looked down at my stomach before meeting my eyes again. "You were badly injured, and you need time to heal. The pups are currently under care, and you need to focus on resting so your wolf can do her job and heal your body."
I didn't really want to accept her idea, but I knew in my heart that she was right. I couldn't even stand up on my own legs without wincing in pain.
"Do you know who was chasing you in those woods?" she asked, her eyes searching my pale face.
I shook my head slowly, pretending not to know anything. "No. It was all a blur."
I knew that if I said a single word about Layla, it would only put my newborn pups and myself in greater danger. I needed to get better first, so I would be strong enough to protect my babies if anything happened later on.
A few moments later, the door swung open and Aiden walked into the room holding a paper bag.
When the gray haired woman saw him, a soft smile touched her face. "I was just having a nice conversation with our guest."
Aiden walked over to the small side table, placing the bag down without saying a word. Right behind him, Gina came into the room carrying a wide tray. She walked over to Aiden, taking the food from the bag and placing it neatly onto the tray so he wouldn't have to bother.
Once the food was set up, Aiden walked over to the side of my bed where the woman stood. He looked down at me with his usual cold, sharp eyes.
"How do you feel?" he asked, his voice low and firm.
"I'm fine," I whispered, pulling the blanket a little higher up my chest.
A tiny, barely noticeable smile touched his lips. "You will get better soon."
Gina brought the tray over to my lap, setting it down gently. Seeing this, the gray haired woman signaled to Gina that it was time for them to leave the room so Aiden and I could be alone. Gina smiled slightly, turning around to follow the older woman out the door, shutting it quietly behind them.
Once they were gone, the quiet room grew still. Aiden sat down on the edge of my bed, his cold expression melting into a faint smirk as he looked at me.
"It seems your mate has way too much going on in his life to miss a moment like this," he said, his deep voice cutting through the silence.
I lowered my eyes, my fingers tightening around the edge of the food tray, but I didn't say anything to defend Warren.
Aiden leaned in a little closer, his gaze turning sharp and serious. "You won't be able to hide from your stepsister for long, Diana. She already tried to kill you once, and she won't stop until she finishes the job."
I looked up to meet his cold eyes, my breath catching in my throat.
"You need to stay in my pack," Aiden continued, his tone firm and unyielding. "Here, you and your pups can be protected. I won't let anyone touch you."
