Chapter 31 Uncertainty
The beeping sound coming from somewhere close to me slowly pulled me awake. I opened my eyes, blinking as a bright light from the round bulb on the ceiling hit my vision.
The sharp ray made me scrunch my face as I lifted my hand to block it. My vision was blurry at first, but it slowly began to clear. I looked around and realized I was in a hospital room. I tried to sit up slowly as memories rushed back to me.
The image of two big wolves running toward me replayed clearly in my head, their sharp eyes locked on the wolves attacking me, before everything went black. I was still lost in my thoughts when the door creaked open. I turned my head slightly and saw Cora standing there.
“Diana, you’re awake?” she shouted excitedly as she rushed toward me. She was holding two takeout nylons, which she dropped on the table beside me immediately. “I thought you went into a coma or something, seeing how badly you were injured.”
I gave her a weak, thin smile. “I’m fine… how did I get here?”
She sighed and sat on the bed beside me. “Alpha Warren brought you here. He happened to be there when the wolves attacked you and fought them off. I heard he killed one of them.”
My gaze dropped to my lap. So he was the one I saw rushing toward me before everything went black. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t even be here in the first place. I wouldn’t have stayed alone at work while every other staff had gone home.
“How are you feeling now?” Cora asked softly, taking my hand. Her eyes moved to the stitched cut on my arm and then to my other hand that was wrapped in bandages.
“I’m fine,” I murmured. “Do you know where my phone is? I need to call my sister.”
Cora gave me a knowing look. “I don’t know where it is, but you can use mine.” She handed her phone to me.
I quickly dialed Layla’s number. She picked up almost immediately.
“Layla, please come to the hospital,” I said, my voice shaking. “I was attacked.”
There was silence on the other end before she spoke. “Diana? Oh Diana… what happened to you?”
“I was attacked by strange wolves. I’m at the hospital now.”
“Oh my God,” she breathed. “I’m coming right now. Where is the hospital?”
I looked at Cora, and she mouthed, Blue Hills Street.
“Blue Hills Street,” I replied.
“Okay. Don’t stress yourself,” Layla said gently before the call ended.
I exhaled slowly and handed the phone back to Cora. “Thank you so much.”
She smiled brightly. “Don’t mention it. But before you thank me too much, I brought food from my mate’s restaurant. I told him to make it extra special, and spicy.”
She picked up one of the nylons. “I heard spicy food helps people heal faster, especially werewolves.”
I sighed lightly. “Cora… pepper food isn’t really my favorite.”
She paused, then smiled as she grabbed the tray. “You’ll like this one. And it’ll help your wolf heal faster than this hospital.”
She placed a bowl of steaming soup in front of me. Pieces of chicken floated inside, and the smell alone made my stomach tighten. I reached for the spoon, but Cora beat me to it.
“Don’t even try,” she said. “Your hands are bandaged, and those stitches don’t need stress. Let me feed you.”
“Cora,” I called with a small smile. “You’re doing too much.”
She shrugged. “That’s what I'm good at, doing too much.”
She scooped the soup and brought it to my mouth. I leaned forward and took it. The warmth spread through me, calming my nerves. It tasted better than I expected.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
She smiled and handed me a bottle of water. “Drink.”
I drank until I realized the bottle was empty. Cora kept feeding me until the bowl was empty, then placed it aside.
“Now you need rest,” she said. “There’s more food later if you’re hungry.”
I opened my mouth to thank her again when the door opened. A man dressed in blue scrubs walked in with a female nurse beside him.
“How are you feeling now, Ms. Diana?” the doctor asked as he walked closer.
He checked the monitor beside me, then my bandages, asking simple questions about pain and dizziness. I answered quietly.
He nodded, then turned to Cora. “May I speak with her alone for a moment?”
Cora looked at me, then stood up. “Sure.” She leaned close to me and whispered, “I’ll be outside.”
Once the door closed, the room felt too quiet.
The doctor pulled a chair and sat beside me. “Ms. Diana, while you were brought in, we ran some tests.”
I nodded slowly.
“There’s something important we need to talk about,” he said carefully. “You’re pregnant.”
The words hit me like a blow.
Pregnant?
My heart started racing, pounding so hard it hurt. The beeping machine grew louder.
“Ms. Diana, calm down,” the doctor said gently. “Please breathe.”
I tried, but my chest felt tight. Tears burned my eyes.
“You may not have noticed the early signs,” he continued softly. “Werewolves don’t always experience pregnancy symptoms the same way humans do.”
My hands trembled as I pressed them to my stomach.
Pregnant… from that night. From the stranger, from my mate who never came looking for me.
Tears slipped down my cheeks. I didn’t expect this. I didn’t plan for this. I never thought a single night would change my life forever.
“Pregnant,” I whispered. “This can't be happening to me.”
The doctor placed a comforting hand on my arm. “You’ll be fine. But you must avoid stress. Your pups need you strong.”
Pups.
I closed my eyes, tears falling freely now. I was carrying life, yet my heart felt heavy and broken.
“I don’t know what to do,” I cried softly.
“You’re not alone,” the doctor said calmly. “Rest now. Focus on healing.”
He stood and walked toward the door. “We’ll keep monitoring you.”
As he left, I stared at the ceiling again, my hand slowly resting on my stomach.
I still couldn't believe that I was pregnant and the worst that I still don't who my mate was or who I had slept with.
