Chapter 398 Help

Chapter 398 Help

And indeed that was the case - it was perfectly normal for Amelia and Samuel to come back to visit Stanley.

Stanley was happy inside, but on the surface, he looked impatient.

"Next time if there's nothing important, don't bother coming back. I like peace and quiet."

Amelia acted as if she hadn't heard Stanley's words and said, "The mashed potatoes are ready. Please go wash your hands and eat."

She called the servants to bring out the dishes one by one.

By now all the lights in the living room were on. Stanley washed his hands and walked out of the kitchen, surprisingly feeling a refreshing sensation as if he were standing in bright sunshine.

Still, he kept that unpleasant expression on his face and sat stiffly at the dining table.

Only after Amelia finished washing her hands and sat down at the table did he speak. "What are you doing back this time? Didn't Samuel say he'd be staying in Goldenvale recently?"

Amelia said frankly, "Samuel and I missed you, so we came back to see you."

She said she missed him. For a moment, Stanley didn't know what to say.

He was used to being serious, and very few people talked to him like this.

"No need to miss me. Sleep here tonight, and you two can go back tomorrow. I'm planning to travel these next few days anyway. Probably won't be back until the end of the year."

"That won't do," Amelia said. "We want to stay for a while. The headquarters can't do without Samuel."

"The company won't stop running without him, otherwise what are all those people under him for?"

"That's true, but when he's not there, things can easily go wrong."

"Then you two move out. Living with me, you'll find me annoying."

"How could that be?"

Amelia said, "Actually, I don't have much in common with people my age. I prefer talking with someone experienced like you - I can learn more."

Stanley pressed his lips together.

He wasn't stupid. He could tell Amelia was deliberately trying to please him.

He gave a cold laugh, his face still showing impatience.

Just then, Samuel came back.

"Dad."

Stanley still had that expressionless look. Hearing Samuel's greeting, he only nodded slightly.

"Sit down and eat."

"Okay." Samuel went to wash his hands, then came, sit down and asked Amelia, "Did you make all this?"

"Yes." Amelia nodded. "The servants said Dad hasn't had much appetite these past few days, so I thought I'd give him a change of taste."

Stanley said dismissively, "Your cooking might not suit my taste either."

"Try it first."

Amelia picked up a piece of fish and put it on Stanley's plate.

Stanley reluctantly took a bite.

It was a local Goldenvale-style dish.

The fish melted in his mouth, fresh and fragrant, with a hint of sweetness.

He rarely ate Goldenvale-style food, always feeling that local Goldenvale dishes put sugar in everything, which he couldn't get used to.

But today's fish was unexpectedly to his liking.

Amelia asked expectantly, "How is it? Does it suit your taste?"

Stanley cleared his throat and said, "Barely edible."

"I'm glad you like it."

"I didn't say I liked it."

Amelia acted as if she hadn't heard and picked up a piece of beef brisket for him.

"Try this. I stewed it until it's very tender."

Stanley acknowledged and tasted the beef brisket.

The brisket was covered in tomato sauce, both tangy and tender.

He liked it just as much.

He couldn't help taking another bite.

Before he knew it, he had eaten twice his usual amount.

This was unprecedented.

After dinner, he was about to take a walk around the villa complex to digest, but Samuel followed him.

"What are you doing here?" Stanley frowned. "I was hoping to have some peace and quiet alone, and here you come again! Are you learning from your wife now, following me around too?"

In the past, Samuel would have turned and left after hearing this.

But today on the plane, Amelia had specifically reminded him several times.

So he patiently said, "Amelia's cooking was so good, I couldn't help eating a few extra bites. I'm also coming out for a walk."

For once, Stanley didn't argue with this.

Amelia might not be great as a person, but her cooking did suit his taste.

"Also, there's something I need your help with." Samuel walked alongside Stanley.

Stanley glanced at him.

"You're the chairman now. There are still things you can't handle?"

"There are too many things I can't handle. That's exactly why I need your help."

Stanley raised an eyebrow and asked, "What is it? Something even you can't manage?"

"It's about a child. You've met her before - she used to be called Sharon, now she's called Shanice."

Stanley had some impression of the name "Sharon."

He asked, "Is that the girl who was kidnapped by the Bloody Syndicate with you?"

"Yes."

He explained Shanice's situation to Stanley in detail.

Stanley's heart wasn't made of stone. When he heard that Shanice's biological parents had pushed her into the lake, anger flashed in his eyes.

"How dare they do such a thing? Aren't they afraid of going to hell?"

"If they had a conscience and feared consequences, they wouldn't have done this."

Stanley was silent for two seconds, then asked, "So what do you want me to help with? Can't you handle just two evil people?"

"Punishing them is my job, naturally. But with Shanice, I need you to put in some effort."

"What do you want me to do?"

Samuel told him he wanted him to pull some strings to arrange for Shanice to get into a private school in Thornfield.

"I know the principal of this school, Elijah, used to be your classmate. Your word would definitely carry more weight than mine. So I'm asking you to help make the connection so Shanice can enroll smoothly."

Stanley snorted and said, "When you suddenly came over, cooking and serving me food, I knew it wasn't for anything good!"

Samuel explained, "What Amelia did has nothing to do with Shanice. She genuinely wants to care for you. As for what you think of me, I don't care, but I can't let you wrongly accuse her."

"You've only been married a short while and you're already taking her side like this?"

"I'm just being fair."

Stanley let out a cold snort through his nose and quickened his pace, leaving Samuel behind.

Samuel assumed Stanley hadn't agreed.

After all, Stanley had nothing to do with Shanice, and he never liked doing thankless tasks.

But unexpectedly, the next day, Stanley left early in the morning to personally visit Elijah, not returning until the afternoon.

Amelia was watching the news in the living room. When she saw Stanley return, she was about to greet him when Stanley tossed an enrollment application onto the coffee table in front of her.

"Have the child fill this out. She can start school next Monday."

Amelia was delighted.

"Thank you, Dad!"

"Such a small thing, and you need me to step in. You're supposed to be so capable, but I guess not that much after all!"

He went upstairs, though the corners of his mouth lifted slightly in a barely noticeable smile.

But thinking that Amelia and Samuel would surely return to Goldenvale once this was done, the smile faded.
