Chapter 231 He Can't Forget Her
Yosef seemed unreliable, but was actually smooth and well-connected.
He was someone with exceptional social skills, and most importantly, he was Samuel's trusted confidant and knew about her relationship with Finn.
Samuel had already told her that before they got together, Yosef had helped him investigate Finn.
So Yosef was the perfect person to act as a messenger between them and Finn.
Samuel thought about it and felt this approach would work.
"Let's do that then, otherwise next time I won't be able to stop myself from breaking his nose again."
When Amelia got home, Natalie sent Faith away and talked to her privately about Finn.
"Now that you have Samuel, what about your relationship with Finn?"
"Mom." Amelia interrupted her, saying, "I know what you're worried about. Don't worry, I'm not the confused type, and I'm definitely not someone who repeats past mistakes. Finn and I did love each other once, but now we both have people we like. From now on, we're just two parallel lines. Even if our paths occasionally cross, it'll only be for work reasons."
Natalie hesitated for a moment and said, "I'm not worried about you. I know you're someone who has good judgment."
"Then why are you specifically bringing this up?"
Natalie was a very smart and careful person who rarely said unnecessary things.
Natalie said, "I'm worried about him."
"Finn?"
"Yes."
"Why are you worried about him?"
"Didn't you see the look in his eyes? The way he looked at you seemed so sad. I think that even though he betrayed you, he hasn't let you go. In fact, you might still be the only one in his heart."
Amelia really hadn't noticed how Finn looked at her.
When she came out of the detention center and suddenly saw Finn, she was quite shocked.
Apart from the shock and feeling that fate was playing tricks on her, she had no other emotions.
She hadn't looked at him carefully either.
Much less noticed the look in his eyes.
Now that Natalie mentioned it, Amelia's brows furrowed.
She thought she understood why Samuel couldn't control his anger and hit Finn.
If it were her—if she had noticed the look in Finn's eyes at the time, her hatred might have been stirred up again, and she might have hit him too.
Why would someone who betrayed her and deeply hurt her put on such an act and show that kind of expression?
Back then, because of Finn, she went crazy and lost emotional control, which led to several wrong decisions and indirectly caused heavy damage to the Shadow Operations Division.
If Byron hadn't found a hypnotist in time, it might have caused an even bigger disaster.
Just for that alone, she couldn't forgive herself at the time, and she couldn't forgive Finn either.
"I don't care whether he still has feelings for me or not," Amelia said to Natalie.
Natalie said, "It's just that his position is different now. What I'm worried about is that he might use his authority to force something on you."
"He won't," Amelia said. "His goal is to climb higher. Women aren't as important to him as his career. He won't take such a big risk."
Natalie nodded. "That would be best. But you still need to be careful."
Amelia agreed, "I'll be more careful."
She agreed, but her mood was inexplicably troubled.
The reason was simple—she felt her past judgment was really terrible.
How did she ever fall for someone like Finn?
Her judgment had always been very accurate, which was why she could find and recruit people like Byron, Faith, Louis, and Charles.
But with Finn, she had made a terrible mistake.
……
On Samuel's end, after seeing Amelia home, he called Yosef.
He asked Yosef to deal with Finn on his behalf.
"Me?" Yosef asked back. "He wouldn't even see you that day. Will he see me?"
"He might not have wanted to avoid seeing me that day. Too many people were waiting for him at the airport, so he came by train instead."
"Alright, I'll give it a try. If I can make this connection, I'll definitely make it for you."
Samuel pressed his lips together and said, "Be careful. I hit him today, so if he takes it out on you, remember to dodge."
"You hit Finn? Do you know what position he came to Goldenvale in? Don't you know he's backed by The Lewis Family?"
Samuel anticipated that Yosef would have a lot to say scolding him, so he quickly hung up the phone.
To be safe, he even turned off his phone.
When Yosef's second call was met with a message that the phone was off, he couldn't help but laugh in frustration.
But angry as he was, he still did what Samuel asked.
He contacted Finn's assistant and said he wanted to invite Finn to dinner.
The assistant knew who Yosef was and kindly reminded him, "I'm afraid tonight won't work. Someone has already made plans with Mr. O'Connor."
"Who?"
"I can't disclose that. But I can ask for you to see if tomorrow would work."
"Thanks so much."
"No problem. I'll call you back when I have news."
"Great."
Yosef hung up and told his people to send some gifts to Finn's assistant.
He also had his people investigate who Finn was meeting tonight.
Before they could find out, Finn's assistant called him back.
"Mr. Dobbins, would 6:30 PM at Whispering Oak Tavern work for you?"
Yosef was stunned, then overjoyed.
"Of course, absolutely."
"Great, then it's set for that time."
After hanging up, Yosef was happy but also puzzled.
Didn't they say he had plans with someone?
How did he suddenly free up time to have dinner with him?
Yosef didn't think he had that much influence.
Could it be for Samuel's sake?
But he quickly dismissed that idea too.
Samuel had just beaten up Finn, so Finn must resent Samuel.
What was really going on?
But Yosef soon stopped overthinking. Either way, Finn was willing to have dinner with him, which was good news.
In Finn's office.
He rubbed his palms, sore from reviewing documents for so long.
Marlon had left behind too many things to handle. Since setting foot in Goldenvale, he'd barely rested.
Of course, these matters weren't that urgent.
He just needed to distract himself.
Otherwise, he would think about that scene at the detention center entrance—Amelia and Samuel walking hand in hand.
He couldn't think about it!
Or he'd go crazy!
Finn gripped his pen tightly.
The expensive pen snapped like a toothpick.
When Finn's assistant came in, he saw exactly this scene.
He was startled and was about to quietly back out when Finn called his name.
"Go ahead, what is it?"
The assistant dared to look up and saw that Finn's expression was already back to normal.
He didn't dare relax, afraid of becoming a target for Finn's anger.
"Mr. O'Connor, as you instructed, I've arranged to meet Mr. Dobbins at 6:30 tonight."
"Good." Finn nodded.
The assistant hesitated, then asked, "For Mr. Hays, should I call to explain, or will you do it yourself?"
"I'll do it."
"Alright."
The assistant responded and quickly left.
Only after closing the door did the assistant dare to let out a long breath.
Although he called himself an assistant, he was actually the office director.
He used to work for Marlon, whose temper wasn't great either, but he felt he could handle it.
But with the new arrival Finn, he felt inexplicably afraid.
He always felt like Finn was about to explode, yet he would suppress his anger each time.
This was scarier than just letting the anger out.
It was like waiting to be executed, but the blade kept not falling.
You knew you would die, but didn't know when.
Waiting to die was really unpleasant.
In the office.
Finn threw away the broken pen and used his personal phone to call Francis.
"Mr. Hays."
"Finn, we're old friends. Why are you still calling me Mr. Hays?"
Finn smiled into the phone and said, "If I'm not polite, I won't be able to apologize to you in a moment."
"What's up?"
"About tonight's dinner—I have something come up. How about we change it to tomorrow?"
"Oh, is that all? Sure, you handle your business. Just let me know when you've set a time."
"Will do."
The call ended, and the smile instantly disappeared from Finn's face.
On the other end, Francis's expression changed the same way.
He put down his phone and called his subordinate to cancel tonight's private room.
The subordinate acknowledged, then asked curiously, "Do you have other plans tonight?"
"No, it's Finn. He said he has something else tonight. The dinner is pushed to tomorrow."
The subordinate immediately said, "A guy who climbed to this position by relying on a woman dares to be so arrogant?"
"Not necessarily." Francis casually lit a cigarette and said, "He probably has something else going on. Send someone to follow him and see who he's meeting tonight."
"Yes."
……
Soon it was evening.
Finn went to the appointment as agreed.
But halfway there, he noticed someone following him.
His brow furrowed tightly. He told the driver to pull over, then switched to a bus.
The person following him quickly stopped and got on the bus too, only to discover after the bus started moving that Finn was outside the bus, getting back into his car.
The man had to report to Francis through gritted teeth.
"Useless idiot!"
Francis cursed a few times and hung up directly, calling his trusted aide into the office.
"Go investigate Finn."
Finn went out of his way to shake off his people to meet someone, which made him inexplicably uneasy.
It was also because the Combat Arts Association people were too stupid, killed off by Samuel with none left standing, leaving only some useless ones who had to hide everywhere.
Otherwise, if he'd sent Combat Arts Association people to follow, they wouldn't have been discovered.
—Samuel had made arrangements, so outsiders could only find out that the Combat Arts Association was eliminated by Samuel.
"Investigate what?" his subordinate asked.
Francis glared at him irritably.
"Investigate everything! Every detail—dig up all his information for me to see!"
"Yes!"
Francis lit a cigarette, feeling very troubled.
On the other side.
Finn had already met with Yosef.
Yosef had cleared the tavern in advance, so the two could talk freely.
Yosef was very good at conversation. Although it was his first time meeting Finn, it was as if they'd known each other for a long time. He didn't let the atmosphere cool down at all.
After a few rounds of drinks, Finn seemingly casually brought up Samuel.
