Chapter 299: Stella Poisoned
But Amelia had no time to observe Marlowe's expression. She grabbed her bag and left quickly.
When she got downstairs, Amelia asked Louis to get another car while she drove off first, heading to the Crawford Group.
On the road, Amelia freed one hand and called the owner of the guesthouse where they had stayed before.
The elderly couple was very helpful. After Amelia explained what she needed, they immediately agreed to go check on things first.
There was no police station at the snow mountain resort—the station was in town.
It would take at least an hour and a half to get from town to the snow mountain resort.
Having the elderly couple help out now would save the most time.
When she arrived at the company, Samuel was already waiting downstairs.
York was with him—he would drive, so Amelia sat in the back with Samuel.
She asked, "Where's Yosef now?"
"I just called him but he didn't answer. He's probably focused on driving. We'll try to catch up."
"Okay."
Amelia then mentioned the elderly couple from the guesthouse.
Samuel felt slightly relieved.
"I only thought to have the police head to her place. I forgot we had contact info for the snow mountain resort guesthouse."
Amelia said, "I didn't think of it at first either. My mom reminded me."
Samuel asked, "How's Mom's leg?"
In this situation, Amelia didn't bother worrying about how he addressed her mother. She said, "Nothing serious. Today was mainly to help my mom reconcile with my aunt."
"Your aunt?"
Samuel frowned slightly.
He already knew what had happened at the Wood family that day, so his impression of the Wood family was very poor.
Amelia said, "Aunt Marlowe is different from the others. She does care about my mom, there's just been some misunderstanding."
"If they care about each other, the misunderstanding will clear up sooner or later."
"Yes, I think so too."
As they spoke, the elderly couple called back.
Amelia quickly answered.
She heard an anxious voice on the other end.
"This girl seems to have taken something. She's foaming at the mouth and convulsing."
Amelia's heart sank heavily.
"Is there a hospital in the village?"
"No, only a clinic."
"Could you please take my friend to the clinic first? I'll call an ambulance right away."
"Okay!"
There was a burst of noise on the other end, then the call quickly ended.
Amelia anxiously dialed emergency services.
After they said they'd send an ambulance immediately, she hung up.
"How could this happen out of nowhere?"
Samuel was silent for two seconds, then asked, "Did she drink poison herself?"
"Impossible!"
Amelia said firmly, "I've already arranged everything for Stella."
At this point, she couldn't worry about keeping Yosef's secret anymore.
"They're in love, but public opinion won't accept them being together."
Samuel disagreed. "She's already divorced. And she and Philip never had feelings for each other. Philip likes men. Stella's marriage was forced. They had no feelings when they were together before, let alone now."
"People who don't know the full story won't see it that way. Even if they know, they still won't think Stella and Yosef can be together. They'll just think it's morally wrong."
In fact, forget other people—even Amelia was shocked and confused when she first found out.
But matters of the heart were never controlled by reason.
If everyone could control their feelings with logic, no one would be trapped by love.
She said, "I know they can't be accepted by most people, so I'm planning to help Stella change her identity."
Her plan was to have Stella fake her death.
Stella's brother would arrange a funeral for her—her parents probably wouldn't attend anyway.
Once Stella "died," Amelia would arrange plastic surgery for her and create a new identity.
Then Stella could go abroad to continue her unfinished studies.
After completing her studies and returning, she could openly be with Yosef.
By then, Stella would no longer be Stella, and there would be no public criticism.
She had even started looking for plastic surgery clinics.
"So Stella absolutely wouldn't commit suicide. She's full of hope."
People full of hope would never suddenly end their own lives.
And Stella didn't have any mental illness.
Though she'd been sad lately, her personality and spirit were still healthy.
"Then it was done by someone else." Samuel's eyes turned cold.
He didn't know much about Stella, but Yosef was his close friend.
Naturally, he was angry that his friend's loved one had encountered such a thing.
"Don't tell Yosef yet, so he doesn't lose control emotionally on the road and get into danger."
"Okay." Amelia agreed.
The guesthouse owner called again soon.
This time it wasn't the owner speaking, but the clinic doctor.
"It's poisoning, but if we pump her stomach now, there should still be hope."
"The ambulance is already on its way."
"Our clinic has a vehicle too. We can send her first, then transfer to the ambulance when we meet it. That'll save more time."
"Thank you so much!" Amelia said gratefully.
"It's what we should do."
After getting the license plate number, she called the emergency center again.
Just in case the two vehicles passed each other.
After doing all this, Amelia was still anxious.
The clinic could only determine it was poisoning, but didn't know what poison.
If it was something like paraquat...
Amelia didn't dare think further.
Samuel reached out and held her hand.
"It'll be okay."
Soon after, Amelia received another call from the guesthouse owner.
Stella had been taken to the hospital in town.
Amelia got the doctor's contact information. After a brief conversation, she relaxed a bit.
"It's not a deadly poison. She ate some poisonous mushrooms. They can save her."
Samuel also felt relieved.
Only then did they dare call Yosef.
Amelia first said that Stella's life wasn't in danger, then mentioned the poisoning.
Yosef cursed several times on the other end.
"Was it the Hughes family?"
Amelia said, "It was poisonous mushrooms. We can't rule out that Stella ate them by mistake. Stay calm for now. Don't worry about the Hughes family yet. Stella is what matters most right now."
"I know. Don't worry, I won't do anything rash."
"Drive safely."
"Okay."
Both cars sped along, arriving at Stella's hospital before dark.
Samuel didn't go in.
"I'll go check things out at the snow mountain resort. You stay here with Stella. The medical conditions here aren't great—she needs you."
"Okay."
Amelia had no extra words. She got out and ran into the hospital.
On the way here, she'd already seen Yosef's car.
Yosef had arrived but hadn't called her, which meant Stella's condition was stable.
