Chapter 298 : Help Sherrie To Find Job
Chapter 298 : Help Sherrie To Find Job
Nigel's face darkened. "No matter what, this is your fault. You've been away from home for so long that you have no idea how difficult things have been. Sherrie worked incredibly hard during her internship at the hospital. She's done everything she could to secure a full-time position. She hasn't even had time to come home at night.
“And now, because of you, she's been suspended. The consequences are this serious, and all you bring is a lousy fruit basket?" As he spoke, Nigel kicked over the fruit basket Allison had brought.
An orange rolled across the floor and stopped at Allison's feet. She lowered her eyes to it for a moment before looking back at Nigel. "Then what should I do?"
Seeing that Allison still didn't understand, Nigel sighed and made himself clear. "Sherrie lost her job because of what happened. As far as I'm concerned, it's your responsibility to find her another job."
Allison looked puzzled. "But I don't know anything, and I can't do anything. I can't even find a job for myself. How am I supposed to find one for her?"
Nigel ground his teeth silently and suppressed his anger as he said in a low voice, “Fine, you don't know anything. But what about Jareth?”
Allison lowered her head. "He doesn't really like talking to me. If I keep bringing things up, he'll definitely get annoyed."
Nigel had to admit she had a point. Allison had never been good at talking to people. One wrong word from her could easily make a bad situation worse. So he patiently explained, "Just tell Jareth to arrange a position for Sherrie. Any position will do. For someone like him, it's only a matter of saying a few words. Of course, he'll help."
Allison turned to Sherrie. "But wouldn't that be pulling strings? Isn't she always talking about being upright and principled? Would she really do something that shameless?"
Sherrie curled her lip, clearly irritated by the way Allison blurted out her words.
"Weren't you accused of cheating, too?" Nigel asked.
"I didn't cheat," Allison replied.
Nigel frowned. "If you didn't cheat, then why did so many people make such a big deal out of reporting you?"
"You didn't watch the full news report," Allison said. "All you know is that I was reported, but did you ever bother to find out who reported me?"
Nigel frowned as he looked at Allison. "What are you trying to say? Of course, it was some concerned citizen who reported you."
From the moment he saw the news, he had been convinced Allison cheated. In his mind, someone must have noticed something suspicious and reported it. If that wasn't a concerned citizen, then what was?
Without saying a word, Allison lowered her head and scrolled through her phone. After finding what she wanted, she handed it to Nigel. "This is the video of the inspection team's investigation into me."
Nigel took the phone and watched the video. As the footage played, shock gradually spread across his face. In the clip, Allison sat calmly across from the investigators and asked, "Hello, teachers. Could you tell me how I was reported for cheating? Did anyone actually witness me cheating?"
One of the investigators replied, "We received a report from outside the school. Your mother said that she gave you cheat sheets and tools, and even bribed a teacher to look after you."
Nigel stared at the screen for a full ten seconds before slowly turning to Ruth, disbelief filled his face.
The volume on Allison's phone had been loud enough for everyone to hear. Once the video ended, she slowly put her phone away.
Ruth had heard every word as well. When Nigel looked her way, panic flashed across her face for a split second. She quickly hid it and forced herself to stay composed. "What is it?" she asked, acting as though nothing was wrong.
"The video said that you were the one who reported Allison," Nigel said.
The words startled Ruth so badly that she shot to her feet. Her expression turned complicated as she looked at Allison. "Allison, how could you make up something like this? I'm your mother. Why would I ever try to hurt you? We may not get along, but I'd never interfere with your SAT. If you succeeded, it would benefit me too."
Allison had expected her to deny everything, so she played a second video.
This footage had been recorded by another student's mother. In the video, a woman wearing a hat and a mask was talking on the phone.
"Yeah, thanks again for the cheat sheets. Allison's definitely going to get a great score this time. Good thing you spoke to the teacher beforehand and asked them to keep an eye on her. With those cheat sheets, there's no way she'll get caught. Don't worry. Once the exam is over, I'll bring Allison to treat you to dinner."
Nigel fell silent.
The woman's face was hidden behind a hat and mask, but they knew Ruth too well. The way she talked, her mannerisms, and even her tone were all unmistakably familiar.
Ruth immediately denied it. "That's not me. Her face is covered like that. Who's going to believe it's me?"
"You can fake your scores, Allison, but you can't fake your way through life," Ruth argued. "What's the point of deceiving yourself like this?"
Allison didn't bother arguing with her. Instead, she said, "I was falsely accused of cheating, and Ruth was the one behind it. So if “Ms. Allison” wants compensation, she should be asking Ruth for it."
Nigel's eyes narrowed as he looked at Allison.
Why had she called Sherrie "Ms. Allison"? It couldn't have been a simple mistake. There had to be something behind it.
There were only four people in the living room, and no one else was around. So why had Allison spoken with such obvious mockery in her voice?
Nigel suddenly realized something. His eyes immediately shifted toward the doorway, but there was no one there. The entrance was empty, as if no one had ever been standing outside.
Allison rose from her seat. "As for helping Sherrie get a job through connections, I can't do that," she said. "But I've already submitted the evidence regarding the false cheating accusation to the SAT department. The case is also being forwarded to the court. The people involved should be receiving a lawyer's letter soon. I just hope none of you are on that list."
