Chapter 14 Miscarriage? William's Phone Rings
The female officer was tapping on the car window, looking at Amelia with concern written all over her face.
Amelia clutched her stomach, her forehead covered in cold sweat.
"Ma'am, ma'am, what's wrong? Are you okay?" The officer was anxious, saying something urgently to the person beside her.
Amelia knew - it was the baby.
She had already been showing signs of a possible miscarriage.
Just now in the parking lot, trying to dodge the car, she had jumped and run quickly, and then got hit by that black car while inside her vehicle...
Was she going to lose the baby?
But she wasn't ready yet.
Amelia suddenly felt panicked and upset.
She suddenly became terrified of losing this child.
"Ma'am, ma'am, are you okay? Open the door!"
The officer's voice came again.
Amelia's vision kept going dark. She endured the pain and opened the car door, then passed out.
...
Meanwhile, on the other side.
The Brown Group building was brightly lit.
William was working on a proposal.
He had scheduled many meetings today.
Many matters needed his final decision.
From afternoon until now, he had been dealing with things non-stop.
His expression grew increasingly stern.
In the huge conference room, no one dared make a sound.
Looking at the report in his hand, William tapped lightly with his left hand.
"Who's the manager in charge of this project?" His voice was calm as still water, yet carried such strong authority that it made people nervous.
"...Mr. Brown, it's me." A middle-aged man stood up, wiping away sweat.
William glanced at him, his thin lips parting slightly as he said, "Explain."
The middle-aged man wiped more sweat.
"Well, that... it's just... it's..." The middle-aged man tried to explain for a long time but couldn't get to the point.
He talked around the issue, citing this reason and that reason - basically, he had messed up.
"Enough."
Before he could continue, William had already spoken.
The middle-aged man began trembling, his eyes full of fear.
He immediately begged, "Mr. Brown, Mr. Brown, please give me one more chance, I can definitely do better!"
William frowned, and the secretary beside him immediately understood.
Rhys spoke up: "When you submitted the project proposal, you made it sound amazing. Who's to blame for this result now?"
"But I..." The middle-aged man tried to explain.
Rhys cut him off sharply: "Stop making excuses. The project was backed by the Brown Group with massive resources, and you still couldn't make it work. Don't you know what the real reason is!"
The middle-aged man tried to struggle, but William threw a document right in front of him.
"Such a small project, yet the corruption is so serious!" William said coldly.
The middle-aged man looked at it and his face turned ashen.
He trembled, trying to say something, but Rhys had already waved his hand.
The conference room door opened, and the Brown Group's internal investigation team came in and took him away.
"Mr. Brown, Mr. Brown, I was wrong, please let me go..."
As the middle-aged man's miserable cries faded away, everyone else in the conference room became even quieter.
William swept his cold gaze over everyone present - his goal of making an example had been achieved.
"Meeting adjourned."
After those two words, William strode out of the conference room.
Rhys followed William all the way into the CEO's office.
Watching William sit in his chair and frown while resting, Rhys immediately had his subordinates make a cup of coffee and bring it up.
William rubbed his temples with his eyes closed.
Mentally exhausted.
When the water is too clear, there are no fish.
In such a huge organization as the Brown Group, there would definitely be many internal problems.
He understood this principle.
But what he didn't understand was why he seemed particularly tired these past few days.
As footsteps approached, William sensed someone placing something on the desk.
"William, have some warm water. It's late, and you need to take care of yourself while working. I put some tea leaves in it to help you relax."
Inexplicably, William seemed to hear a familiar voice.
But when he opened his eyes, what he saw was Rhys bowing to him.
Looking down, there was a cup of coffee on the desk.
William pressed his lips together slightly.
"Mr. Brown doesn't want coffee?" Rhys noticed his mood and asked immediately.
William frowned slightly. Actually, he wasn't clear about his own complicated emotions either.
"Usually it's Mrs. Amelia Brown who brings you warm water." Rhys said apologetically, "I couldn't find the tea leaves Mrs. Amelia Brown uses, and seeing that you were tired, Mr. William Brown, so..."
Right, usually it was Amelia who stayed by his side.
William closed his eyes. He felt his headache getting worse.
"Should I call Mrs. Brown and ask?" Rhys's tentative voice came.
"No need." William said.
Rhys acknowledged and then the office fell quiet again.
Deathly silent.
William had never felt the office this quiet before.
A wave of irritation rose in his heart.
"What's going on this month?" William broke the silence.
"Are you referring to the workload, Mr. Brown?" Rhys responded obediently.
"Yes."
"It's like this." Rhys said quietly, "Previously, many small matters, like today's corruption issue, were first handled by Mrs. Amelia Brown after being reported from below. Only the more important matters would be passed to you, Mr. William Brown, so..."
William opened his eyes and glanced at Rhys.
Rhys understood what he was thinking and said awkwardly: "Mr. Brown, I didn't handle things well."
William didn't blame him too much, just shook his head.
He asked: "Where's that contract I need to sign today?"
Rhys's head lowered even more.
"Sorry, Mr. Brown, the people below haven't finished organizing it yet."
William sighed and waved his hand, letting Rhys leave.
Rhys breathed a sigh of relief and quickly left.
William looked at the closed office door. He actually understood.
He and Amelia had gotten the divorce receipt suddenly, and many of the tasks she handled hadn't been properly handed over.
The office was completely quiet, with only the clock making soft sounds.
The air carried the unique bitter smell of coffee.
The rising steam from the coffee made William frown even more.
He picked up his phone and looked at the message he'd sent Amelia earlier, asking her to come home on the weekend.
She still hadn't replied.
Remembering how decisively she had refused when he called asking her to come home.
Still throwing a tantrum?
Just as William was looking at his phone, suddenly, there was a knock on the office door.
He looked up to see Isabella's smiling face at the door.
"William." Isabella walked in with a smile, "I came to keep you company."
William put away his phone and nodded slightly.
Isabella discreetly glanced at William's phone.
She thought for a moment, then sat down looking conflicted.
"What's wrong?" William noticed her mood was off and asked.
"William, did Amelia contact you today?" Isabella asked hesitantly.
William looked at Isabella, using his eyes to signal her to continue.
"I posted a video this afternoon, announcing that I'm going to participate in 'Voice of Heaven.'"
Isabella observed William's expression and continued: "I just wanted to follow the path she used to take, but I didn't expect netizens to say some not-so-nice things..."
Isabella hesitated, then said with difficulty: "Did she... come to you to blame you for this?"
William frowned slightly. This afternoon?
He had been in meetings all day and hadn't paid attention to what was happening online.
William looked up at the clock.
It was already 9:15 PM.
"There's one more thing..."
Isabella paused slightly, then said: "When I left the studio at 8:45, I felt something was off. Just now when I was parking downstairs, I realized I'd been followed by reporters since I left."
Isabella looked very apologetic. She took out her phone and handed it to William.
William looked and saw photos tracking Isabella from leaving Floral Haven all the way to entering the Brown Group.
With the caption - #Isabella freely enters and exits the Brown Group late at night, suspected to be with William#
Below were many comments mocking Amelia for being about to be abandoned.
"William, I'm sorry, it was all my carelessness." Isabella said with reddened eyes, "I didn't mean to."
William waved his hand, indicating this wasn't important.
After all, once the cooling-off period ended, he was going to go public with Isabella anyway.
It's just that Amelia...
Suddenly, William's phone started vibrating like crazy.
The clock on the side changed.
It was now 9:20 PM.
William picked up his phone and saw Amelia's name flashing on the caller display.
