Chapter 27 It's a trap

Chapter 27 It's a trap

"Ivy, hold on!" I shouted as the world fractured around us, Agent Hale's device humming with malevolent energy. Portals swirled open like wounds in reality, sucking in air and light, pulling at our clothes and hair. The manor—our hard-won sanctuary—twisted into a kaleidoscope of timelines, walls bleeding into shadows of past cycles. Ben, Lena, Aris, and Elijah reached for us, their faces contorted in horror, but the pull was too strong. "Don't let go!"

Ivy's grip tightened on my hand, her nails digging into my skin, sending that sharp, real pain through me—the pain only she could make me feel. "Cassian, I love you! Whatever happens—" Her words cut off as we tumbled into the void, Hale's laughter echoing behind us: "Enjoy the new cycle, Thornes. Reality's just a dream now."

Darkness enveloped us, then spat us out into... a bar? Not the origin tavern, not The Pit from the future wasteland. This was modern—dim neon lights buzzing overhead, sticky floors underfoot, the air thick with the smell of spilled beer and fried food. Patrons laughed and clinked glasses, oblivious to our sudden appearance in a booth at the back. Music thumped from a jukebox—some old rock tune that felt out of place in our chaos.

Ivy gasped, sitting up beside me, her hair disheveled, eyes wide with confusion and relief. "Cassian? Are we... back? This looks like Vegas. The bar where we met." She touched my face, her fingers trembling, tears glistening. "God, I thought we'd lost everything again. I was so scared—I love you so much. Don't ever let me go through that without you."

I pulled her into my arms, crushing her against my chest, feeling her heartbeat sync with mine. Emotion choked me—love, fear, the raw ache of nearly losing her for the umpteenth time. "I won't. I promise. I love you too, Ivy. You're my anchor in this madness." I kissed her forehead, then her lips, soft and reassuring at first, but deepening with the desperation of survivors. "But is this real? Or Hale's trap? A new cycle disguised as our beginning?"

She nodded against me, her breath warm on my neck. "It feels real. But look—everyone's staring." Indeed, a few patrons eyed us curiously, whispering about the "couple who just appeared." The bartender, a grizzled man with tattoos snaking up his arms, approached, wiping a glass. "You two okay? Look like you've seen a ghost. Drinks on the house if you need 'em."

"Thanks," I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil. "Two whiskeys. Strongest you've got." As he poured, I scanned the room—familiar yet off. The calendar behind the bar read October 29, 2025. Our date. But was it?

Ivy sipped her drink, her hand on my thigh under the table, squeezing for comfort. "Cassian, if this is a cycle, we break it. Like always. Together." Her eyes shone with determination and love, making my chest tighten. "Remember our wedding? The contract that became real love? That's us. Unbreakable."

Before I could respond, chaos erupted. A group at the pool table argued loudly—something about a cheated shot. One guy, built like a tank with a shaved head, shoved another. "You think you can hustle me, punk?" Fists flew, cues cracking like whips. The bar devolved into a brawl, patrons joining in or fleeing.

"Shit," I muttered, standing to shield Ivy. "Stay behind me." A wild swing came my way from a drunken fighter, and I ducked, countering with a punch to his gut. He wheezed, but another charged— a woman with wild hair, swinging a bottle. "Get out of my bar!" she yelled.

I grabbed her wrist, twisting it gently to disarm her. "We're not the enemy!" But the fight spread, engaging us fully. Ivy picked up a fallen stool, swinging it at a guy who grabbed for her. "Back off!" she shouted, her voice fierce, eyes blazing with the fire I loved.

We fought back to back, my knuckles bruising as I traded blows—elbow to a jaw, knee to a groin. Pain flared, real and grounding. "Ivy, to the door!" I called, shoving through the melee.

In the thick of it, two strangers collided near us—a sleek businessman in a suit and a tattooed bartender on break. He bumped her, spilling her drink. "Watch it!" she snapped, but then, unexpectedly, she grabbed his tie, yanking him down into a sexy, heated kiss. It was raw, passionate—her lips devouring his, his hands sliding to her hips, pulling her flush against him. Tongues clashed visibly, her moan lost in the fight's din, his fingers tangling in her hair. The bar whooped, momentarily distracted, the kiss like a spark in the chaos.

Ivy's eyes widened, a flush creeping up her neck amid the adrenaline. "That was... wow. Unexpected."

I grinned despite the fight, pulling her close for a quick kiss of our own. "Like us. Always surprising." Emotion surged—love in the midst of battle.

The police sirens wailed outside, breaking the brawl. Patrons scattered, and we slipped out the back, hearts pounding. In the alley, under a flickering streetlight, Ivy turned to me, her chest heaving. "Cassian... that felt too real. But Hale's words—'reality's just a dream.' What if this is the trap?"

I held her, our foreheads touching. "Then we wake up. But first... I need you. To feel grounded." My voice was husky with emotion and desire, the fight's adrenaline mixing with our bond.

She nodded, tears and fire in her eyes. "Yes. Make love to me. Remind me we're real." We found a shadowed corner, hidden by dumpsters, the risk heightening everything. I pressed her against the wall, kissing her deeply, tongues dancing with urgent love. "I love you," I whispered, hands sliding under her shirt, cupping her breasts, thumbs circling her nipples until she gasped.

"Cassian... yes. Touch me everywhere." Her voice broke with emotion, her hands fumbling with my belt, freeing me. She stroked me, her touch electric, making me groan. "Feel how much I want you. How much I need us."

I hiked up her skirt, fingers finding her wet and ready. "You're perfect," I murmured, slipping inside her with one thrust. We both cried out, the connection overwhelming. "Ivy... God, I love feeling you like this."

We moved together, hard and emotional—thrusts deep, her legs around my waist, nails raking my back. "Harder," she begged, tears falling. "Show me your love. Through everything."

"Yes... always," I groaned, pounding into her, pleasure building with every whisper of "I love you." We climaxed together, bodies shuddering, sobs of release mixing with joy.

Panting, we held each other. "That was... us," she said softly. "Real."

But as we dressed, a figure stepped from the shadows—Agent Hale, smirking. "Nice show. But the cycle's just begun. This bar? Your meeting point. Looped forever."

Plot twist: Hale wasn't an agent—he was my future self, corrupted. "I created this to test you. Pass, and freedom. Fail... eternal dream."

Ivy gasped. "Cassian?"

I felt the pull—memories flooding. Was I Hale? Or was this the final lie?

The alley shimmered, portals opening. "Choose," Hale said. "Wake... or stay dreaming with her."

As reality cracked, Ivy whispered, "Fight, my love." But which was the fight? The cliffhanger loomed—freedom or endless illusion?
