Chapter 26 Puzzled
Chapter 26 Puzzled
How would Denise know about that? There’s no way the news would’ve spread that far and wide.
“How did that happen?” I asked, puzzled. I couldn’t understand how she would be able to know what’s been happening over here. Denise—the same person who felt so furious during the meeting after Dante had declared that he wouldn’t take her with him to banquet, something didn’t seem to add up.
“I think I’m supposed to be asking you that—what happened with Mister Moretti? Why is he in the hospital?”
“A lot of things happened but I want to know—how did she find out about him, about us and how we’re in the hospital?” I needed answers, clear and simple. Was she spying on us?
“I’m not sure—she assumed the position at a board meeting yesterday” he revealed. She doesn’t only know about what had happened but she’s also arranged a board meeting?
“She got the board to meet? That’s no—that’s crazy, what else did she say?” I questioned. This was something out of the ordinary. First off, I had noticed that Claire’s men moved with discretion, the only people that knew about what was happening were the first responders and her henchmen. Then how would Denise find out about what happened here.
“She didn’t say anything much—apart from the fact that she’s in charge for the time being” he paused “I heard that Mister Moretti is in bad condition and it’ll take a while before he gets back” he whispered. That was too much detail. Maybe enough detail that I needed. Denise wasn’t telling the whole truth—she knows about it all and that means she’s highly involved.
“Well—I’ve gotta go, the doctors said I need to rest” I said with an attempt to conceal my shock. He didn’t push any further, I hung up the phone on him and walked straight to the OR.
On getting to the door, I noticed that it was empty, no nurses, or doctors, finally I thought about asking Caleb what would happen.
I walked down the hall, noticing a door slightly open, I heard muffled voices coming from the door. This isn’t your business Lily—let’s go! I couldn’t shake off the feeling that my ears needed to hear whatever was going on in there.
“Find him and end him” one of the mysterious men said, his raspy voice was low but my ears were good enough to get the full attention.
“It—it might not be possible—there are lots of people guarding him” the man in a white doctor coat shivered, his voice trembled as he stuttered. I couldn’t blame him, from the sound of their conversation, they wanted him to kill someone, someone influential.
“Get the job done or else—”
“Now, now, let’s not get so hasty—The dark phoenix isn’t an easy target, but we know you can do it” I held my palm over my mouth, to stop myself from screaming. They were talking about unaliving Dante.
“Just get into his room and put it in his drip—no one will suspect a thing, this is the perfect chance” the other continued. His voice was low, moderate, it didn’t sound raspy or thuggish as the first. It sounded like some sweet reminder, these people are killers, murderers.
I have to get to his room and find a way to protect him. He’s always protected me, I’ll be here when he needs me and that time is now. Just as I pulled back slowly, I stepped on a pen, making a scrunch sound. Fck!
I heard a swooshing sound “Who’s there?” I heard from inside. I didn’t wait, I ran down the hall as fast as I could, making a turn before I felt my body being whisked away.
“Shh” he placed his palm over my mouth, pinning me to the wall in an enclosed space, I held my breath as well.
“Find whoever that was and end it before I end you all—” I heard that thuggish voice again. The sound of their shoes stomping the ground as a sign of their movements was all I needed to know that they were gone. I quickly, pushed him off from me slightly, letting out my breath and sigh of relief.
“Th—those men plan on killing him” I panted. He placed his hands on his waist.
“Why do you always get in trouble miss Thompson?” Caleb asked, slapping onto his thigh. His glasses blurred from heavy breathing.
“I’m not getting in trouble—those people are murderers, they’re planning on how to kill him—tell me where his room is right now! I can’t let him be alone” I demanded.
“I can’t let you do that” he opposed. This is about a human life and I just listened to him oppose trying to save someone who is in definite need of our help.
“Why the hell won’t you let me?” I glared at him,
“Because it’s dangerous—if they see you, they’ll keep and remember your face and I have to keep you safe, for your father’s sake—”
“For my father’s sake? I told you he was dead when I was a child—I can assure you that he’s been dead a long time ago, please take me to Dante, I want to see him!” I pleaded. He looked perplexed, he walked to me, his eyes calmly scanning my face.
“We don’t have time to argue—I’ll help Dante if you stay out of the way, promise?”
“I do—please go now!” I sent him off, putting my face in my palms, tears trickled down my cheeks. “I’ve always been a crier—how much more do I have to keep this up, please be safe Dante” I mumbled, moving out of the enclosed room and making my way to Dante. Caleb might have warned me about getting involved but I couldn’t trust him with Dante, if he termed him dangerous, there’s no telling what might happen.
Just as I tried to trail after him, I heard a couple of nurses “I think he’s related to her—Caleb Thompson” I turned to look. Are they talking about Caleb Stilinski? I thought his last name wasn’t Thompson.
“I mean—it’s not just their last names, his blood fits with hers” what on earth are these women talking about? Caleb Stilinski is my brother?
