Chapter 37 A call to the boss
Chapter 37 A call to the boss
Travis' p.o.v
Fear. It's been so long I felt that emotion, somehow I had managed to slowly push it out of my mind for years and now it's back full with force.
Men were after her. It took a lot of restraint to keep myself from offering her comfort the only way I knew how to. Kissing away her fears, rubbing her soft skin on mine to quell my thumping heart.
But I had to resist. We weren't alone. Bianca and Topher knows but I still have to grant her that respect. My last words to her days ago when I found her shaking in the bed came running to me.
“You will be the one to present yourself to me. Begging for it.”
Damn those words from my mouth, I will have her, both ways. Begging or trying to fight her desires.
“Think about it critically.” Topher's words tore through my thoughts.
“What else is there to think about?” I scowl. “Those men are not thieves, they would have attacked, they were following her.”
“Keep your emotions in check man.” Topher snapped, bumping me on my shoulder.
“You both calm down,” Bianca chipped in.
“Don't fucking tell me to keep my emotions in check,” I yelled. “You both must have led them here.”
“That isn't possible.” Topher said but I wasn't listening to him. I began to tap the couch like a mad dog searching for a bone to quell its want.
“The fuck are you looking for?” Topher sneered.
“My phone. I need to make a call.”
“What call?”
“None of your business.” I picked up the phone lying on the side of the couch and marched towards my room. I could hear footsteps following behind but I didn't bother to look.
“Don't tell me. It's him you want to call.” Topher asked as he got to my door.
“You better get in it fuck off.” I was angry, seething most especially, I was scared.
He got in and I secured the locks to the door.
I connected my phone to laptop on my desk and dialed the number quickly before Topher would try to change my mind.
“Young man.” The voice sent a chill down my spine, carrying a form of authority that demands no opposition. Sounds younger than the owner looked.
My eyes locked on his dark iris. The wrinkled lines on his face smooth out. For a man in his early sixties, he looked older. The more I looked at him, the more I saw the tiny semblance he had to my karma.
Anthony James
“How young could a thirty six year old be?” I asked, my face betrayed no emotions, not even anger. He could read a human miles away by just a display of emotions, I'm not about to give him that power.
“Definitely younger than a sixty two years old I'm sure.” He didn't betray any emotions as well. His face was a strong brick to his emotions. “I thought you had forgotten the reason why you are over there.” He pointed at his screen.
I know what he means, I'm here because of him
“I didn't forget shit.” I felt anger begin to rise in my chest. Over the laptop, Topher brought his hand to his chest and tapped repeatedly. His way of telling me to calm down. “Is that why you sent your thugs my way?”
Anthony sat up, I heard shuffling sounds from his head and he leaned forward. “Thugs?” He frowned. “I don't have thugs, I've got Lords.”
I nodded.
“Whoever you saw wasn't from me.”
“Then it's a breach of agreement, your information for my protection and conservation.”
He chuckled slowly without his face showing emotions. “Then it's with joy in my heart that I announced the end of this agreement because both of the parties has breached it.”
Topher shook his head from over the laptop.
“That's not the point.”
“Then what the heck is the point young man?” He sneered. “I need fucking information about my family. If you don't have it don't fucking call this number again. But remember. My patience runs thin. That might not be your location for long.”
I stiffened, he would uproot me from here, I need him and I also need his daughter.
“Look Anthony…”
“It's Boss to you.” He cut in.
I swallowed, irritably, I'm not used to succumbing to people's command. “Boss, at least tell me, do you think De Luca has found me out?”
There was silence, his eyes darken, his jaw ticked. “Do you have any information for me, Scott.”
I cocked my head sideways. I have to give him what he wants hence I won't get what I want.
“Yes”
His throat bobbed. I could see it, he's nervous or anxious. But he didn't push me for it. Desperation was a man's downfall.
“Kent,” I continued, choosing my words carefully, “doesn’t take working under me lightly. He hates my guts.”
Anthony’s lips pressed into a thin line. A low mutter slipped out. “There’s nothing about you to like.”
If only he knew his daughter had found something to like in me. The thought stayed buried behind my teeth.
“I saw him once,” I went on, “running with some hood kids. Looked organized. Not just bored rich boys acting tough. More like a group.”
Anthony straightened fully now. The casual slouch vanished. “Then find out if he’s in a damn group.” His voice hardened. “I didn’t let him stay with his mom only for him to take that path.”
I caught the fear behind the anger. That was his weak spot.
“I know,” I said evenly. “You’ve made that clear.”
There was a pause, then he waved a hand dismissively. “Anyways.”
I took the opening and switched gears. “Olivia, she threw herself at me.”
The word left his mouth like a curse. “Whore.”
Anger flared across his face, raw and unmasked this time. His jaw tightened, nostrils flaring as if he could still smell the betrayal through the screen. The silence that followed was heavy, deliberate.
Then his voice softened.
“What about my little girl?”
His eyes changed. Just slightly. But enough.
My heart skipped. For the first time since this call started, I felt something dangerously close to uncertainty. Could I talk about her without giving myself away?
From the corner of my eye, I saw Topher grab a pen and paper, scribbling furiously before holding it up to the camera.
DON’T FUCKING PISS HIM OFF. DON’T MESS THIS UP.
I swallowed.
“She's fine. Naive one there but she's good with her hand. She draws quite impressively.”
“I know those details. Man. Tell me about other things.” He snapped.
“Other things like what?”
“Does she have a boyfriend, have you ever seen her with a man?”
The fuck.
I mentally cringed. What the fuck was his business and why the hell do I feel so angry at the thought of her having a boyfriend.
“Never seen her with a man.” I said simply.
“Good. Make sure it remains that way.”
He reached to probably end the call but I stopped him. “Anthony…” he glared. “Boss,” I corrected myself. “Is De Luca onto me. Is he aware of my location?”
“He knows nothing. He can't find you except I want him to.” There was a glint in his eyes. “If you have any other questions maybe you should ask your friend.”
With that the line went blank.
“He knows
I'm here,” Topher said in shock.
But that was not my worry.
The question in my mind right now is
Who were those people tailing her?
