Rivalry
Seth and Dylan found themselves seated across from the clients in the meeting room, ready to present their proposals. The clients, eager to hear their suggestions, directed a question towards Seth's secretary, who had been diligently assisting him throughout the process.
With confidence and expertise, Seth's assistant addressed the clients' inquiry, providing a thorough and well-thought-out response. The clients nodded approvingly, appreciating the secretary's professionalism.
As their attention shifted towards Dylan, one of the clients inquired, "And where is your assistant, Dylan?"
Dylan's eyes darted around the room, a flicker of panic crossing his face. He hesitated for a moment, not wanting Seth to discover that Liv, his wife, was working for him. Dylan knew the potential conflict of interest it could pose.
Gathering his composure, Dylan quickly responded, "My apologies, but my assistant is currently on leave. However, rest assured, I am fully capable of handling the presentation myself."
The clients exchanged glances, slightly disappointed by the absence of Dylan's assistant. Yet, they accepted his explanation, understanding that unforeseen circumstances could arise.
Seth, who had been observing the interaction closely, couldn't help but notice Dylan's evasiveness. Suspicion crept into his mind, but he decided to focus on the task at hand, leaving his curiosity about Dylan's assistant for later.
As the meeting continued, Seth's proposal impressed the clients with its meticulous planning and innovative ideas. Dylan, on the other hand, faced the challenge of compensating for the absence of his assistant. He relied on his own expertise and charisma to deliver a compelling presentation.
At the end of the session, the clients expressed their appreciation for both Seth and Dylan's efforts. However, it was Seth's proposal that resonated most with them, aligning closely with their vision and requirements.
Seth's suspicions regarding Dylan's explanation about his assistant's absence continued to gnaw at him. He couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to the story than Dylan had let on. As he pondered over the situation, he decided to dig deeper and find out the truth.
Seth managed to discreetly gather information from his network. It turned out that Dylan's assistant was not on leave due to sickness, as Dylan had claimed. Instead, she had been actively involved in other projects within Dylan's company.
Armed with this newfound knowledge, Seth awaited the opportunity to confront Dylan. That chance came when the clients, unsatisfied with Dylan's presentation, requested a follow-up meeting to address their concerns and gain further clarity.
Outside the meeting room, Dylan couldn't help but feel relieved that a second chance had been granted. He approached Seth with a smug smile, attempting to diminish Seth's previous victory.
"Enjoy your little victory, Seth," Dylan sneered. "But don't get too comfortable. Next time, I won't even give you a chance to earn the clients' praises. I'll make sure they see my true capabilities."
Seth, his suspicion confirmed, met Dylan's gaze with unwavering determination. "Dylan, it's clear to me now that you weren't honest about your assistant's absence. I know she's been actively working on other projects within your company. What are you trying to hide?"
Dylan's smugness faltered for a moment, replaced by a flash of annoyance. He quickly regained his composure and replied dismissively, "You're mistaken, Seth. My assistant's absence was due to unforeseen circumstances. It's none of your concern."
Seth, refusing to back down, pressed further. "Unforeseen circumstances? Dylan, we both know that you're not the type to compromise a project just because an assistant is sick. What's the real reason? Why did you deceive the clients and me?"
Dylan's face hardened, his voice taking on a defensive tone. "You think you know everything, don't you? Well, Seth, you don't know the whole story. There are reasons behind my decisions that you couldn't possibly understand. Just focus on your own work and leave me be."
Seth's gaze remained unwavering as he responded firmly, "Dylan, dishonesty and deception have no place in our professional relationship. Our rivalry may be fierce, but I expect transparency and integrity between us. The clients deserve the truth, and so do I."
The tension between them was palpable as they stood face to face, the weight of their rivalry and distrust hanging in the air.
During their lunch break, Liv and Scarlet sat together, enjoying a moment of respite from their respective work. As they savored their meals, Scarlet couldn't contain her curiosity and asked Liv about the meeting that had taken place earlier.
Scarlet inquired, "Liv, how did the meeting go? I heard Seth Brown was here, and as the assistant, you're usually meant to be present for such important gatherings."
Liv's eyes widened in shock, setting her utensils down. Confusion clouded her face as she responded, "Meeting? What meeting are you talking about, Scarlet? Dylan never informed me about any meeting today."
Scarlet's eyebrows furrowed, mirroring Liv's confusion. She leaned in closer, her voice filled with concern. "Liv, you're Dylan's assistant. It's your role to be aware of such events and attend them. Are you sure you weren't informed?"
Liv shook her head, her mind racing to make sense of the situation. "No, Scarlet, I'm certain. Dylan never mentioned anything about a meeting today. I don't understand why he would keep me in the dark."
Scarlet's eyes widened in realization. "Wait, Liv, I just remembered. Today is our first day at work. Perhaps that's why you weren't aware. Dylan probably assumed you knew the schedule since you've resumed today."
Liv's confusion turned into a mix of frustration and concern. She had been away for a week, unaware of the meeting that had taken place. It was a breach of communication between her and Dylan, and it left her feeling disconnected from her role as Dylan's assistant.
Taking a deep breath, Liv composed herself and spoke firmly, "Thank you for letting me know, Scarlet."
Scarlet nodded in agreement, empathizing with Liv's predicament. "Absolutely, Liv."
As the cafeteria buzzed with the usual chatter and clattering of trays, a hush fell upon the room as Dylan, dressed in his sharp business attire, made a surprising entrance. All eyes turned toward him, and whispers of astonishment filled the air. It was an uncommon sight to see Dylan in the cafeteria, as he usually preferred to dine in his office.
Ignoring the attention he garnered, Dylan confidently strode towards the table where Scarlet and Liv were seated. His expression was unreadable, leaving those around him curious about his intentions.
Scarlet and Liv exchanged glances, their surprise evident. They scooted over, making space for Dylan to join them. The clatter of cutlery and conversation slowly resumed as Dylan took a seat, his presence still capturing the attention of nearby onlookers.
Dylan broke the silence, his voice carrying a hint of seriousness. "Scarlet, Liv, may I join you?"
Scarlet nodded, a mix of curiosity and apprehension in her eyes. "Of course, Dylan. Please, have a seat."
Liv, still processing Dylan's unexpected appearance, managed a polite smile. "Sure, Dylan. It's nice to see you here."
As Dylan settled in, he took a brief moment to observe the bustling cafeteria around him before focusing his attention on Scarlet and Liv. His demeanor hinted at a desire for a genuine conversation.
"I wanted to apologize," Dylan began, his voice sincere.
Liv and Scarlet exchanged surprised glances, their curiosity piqued.
Dylan continued, his expression softening. "It’s your first day at work today."
Liv's initial frustration began to melt away as she listened to Dylan's genuine admission. Scarlet nodded in agreement, appreciating Dylan's willingness to acknowledge his oversight.
As the workday drew to a close, Liv gathered her belongings, ready to head home. Dylan approached her, a concerned expression on his face.
"Liv, let me drop you off today. It's getting late, and I want to make sure you get home safely," Dylan insisted, his voice filled with genuine concern.
Liv hesitated for a moment, considering his offer. However, she had other plans in mind. She knew that Scarlet had been growing increasingly fond of Dylan, and a mischievous idea sparked in her mind.
"Actually, Dylan, I appreciate the offer, but I think it would be better if you dropped Scarlet off first," Liv suggested, a playful glimmer in her eyes.
Dylan furrowed his brows, not expecting Liv's response. "Why would I drop Scarlet off first? I offered to take you home."
Liv shrugged nonchalantly, trying to contain her excitement. "Well, you know, I've noticed that Scarlet has a bit of a cru..." she didn’t complete her statement.
Dylan's eyes widened in surprise, caught off guard by Liv's mischievous plan. "Liv, that's not fair. “Besides, it's your safety I'm concerned about."
Before Dylan could protest further, Liv took advantage of the moment and swiftly ran off, leaving Dylan standing there, both amused and slightly flustered.
Scarlet, who had been observing the exchange from a distance, approached Dylan with a curious smile. "What was that all about? and where is she running to leaving me all alone."
Dylan shook his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Liv being Liv, I suppose. She suggested I drop you off first."
Scarlet chuckled, her cheeks slightly flushed knowing that Liv tried to play matchmaker. "Well, that's quite the playful idea. But I appreciate the concern. Let's head home together, shall we?"
Dylan nodded, “alright.”
