Chapter 26 Chapter 26

Chapter 26 Chapter 26

Tessa

Mr. Samuel rolled on the floor, as if that could wake Mr. Carter up . I watched him annoyingly, thinking, Can't he be sad without being funny?

"How could this happen to you, why you? Why not them?" she wailed, her dramatic tone making me want to burst out laughing.

What did he mean by "Why not them?" Was he expecting me to have an accident? And be in Mr. Cater's position?

"Who does that?" My lips curled up in a teasing smile.

He directed his gaze toward me, cleaning his teary eyes. His eyes was now shooting red "Tessa," he called, and I gave him my attention, raising my brows in response.

"How did the incident happen? Do you think it's a coincidence? Who do you think would be behind this? Did you know anyone he fought with, maybe in school or around the street?" he asked.

I shook my head. How could he ask me so many questions and expect me to answer them all? At once? I don't think the man is okay though.

"I can't say, sir. I've never seen Mr. Carter arguing or fighting with someone ," I replied.

He nodded, directing his gaze back to Mr. Carter on the bed. "I need him to wake up soon, I have questions to ask him." He nodded as if Mr. Carter could see him or hear him. Well, it's confirmed. He's not okay.

"Yes, he'll wake up soon. The doctor said we should rest assured he'll wake up soon," I replied hoping to calm him down.

He nodded. "Good, he should." He smiled awkwardly.

"You know, when we were small, he used to be a ladies' man," he uttered with a dry smile.

Why was he sharing this? Did he think I was interested? Or Is this the way of cheering himself up?

"The ladies even gave him the nickname 'the charming smile.' Every lady loved him, but he only had eyes for his wife," he continued.

I inhaled loudly, having no interest in his story, but have to pretend like I do in other not to look rude. And did I forget to mention that I felt a slight pang in my chest?

"He would always show off his wife, and when we were in our final year at school, the pressure from all the ladies was too much on him. So, he did something ridiculous, something ridiculous that will always got me laughing till now" he pressed on.

Can't he see my face? Can't he see I have no interest in his lame story? Can't he see his story was beginning to piss me off than I expected.

"He bought a white shirt and printed his wife's picture on it. He'd wear the cloth around school just to show everyone how much he loved his wife."

Even though I had no interest in the story, I couldn't help but laugh out loud. How could he do such a ridiculous thing? Printing a picture on a shirt? It sounded so funny that I laughed until my sides started aching. Mr. Samuel and I were both laughing loudly. Who knows maybe our voices could be heard outside the room.

"I told you he had a funny adulthood," Mr. Samuel said, but his words were cut off by the opening of the door.

Mr. Grumpy strode in, his angry face glaring at me dangerously. If looks could kill, I would have been buried alive by now.

"What instruction did I give you before leaving here earlier?" he asked.

I squeezed my face in confusion. "Instruction?" I tried to recall his words, but nothing came up.

"I told you the patient needed rest and not noise. Didn't I tell you?" he asked.

I rolled my eyes, and he caught me.

"Are you rolling your eyes at me?" he asked, pointing to himself as he walked deeper into the room.

I quickly shook my head, waving my hands in the air to deny the fact, even though it was already too late since he had seen me clearly.

"No, I wasn't," I lied, hoping he would let go of the conversation.

He nodded before pointing toward Mr. Carter. "Please maintain perfect silence, the patient is now showing signs of recovery. The best thing he needs at this moment is silence." He instructed with a straight face.  He then directing his gaze to me. "Maintain it , please."

He walked toward Mr. Carter's bed, checking him up. I smirked at his cold behavior.

My mind clicked on the scene earlier, and I wondered what his relationship with Leah was, but I knew it could be nothing but him being her boyfriend.

He raised his head and caught me glaring at him.

"What happened? Looking at me with those eyes?" he questioned.

"Emm, Doctor, that's just the way she looks at people, don't be annoyed," Mr. Samuel chimed in with a pleading tone.

"Okay," he answered, turning to leave, but I couldn't help but stop him.

"Mr. Grumpy," I called.

He stop walking and directed his gaze to me.

"Grumpy?" He repeated, and that's when I realized I'd said the unspoken word. Who cares though.

"Oh, not you..." My voice trailed off, unsure of what lie to tell since he seemed to know I was talking to him.

"Did you give me that name, 'Grumpy'?" he called again.

I gazed downward.

"You should know it's not appropriate to give someone a name without their consent," he said. I didn't miss the annoyance on his face.  "Don't even call me that name again, okay?" He twisted his face "If you are curious to know my name just open your mouth and ask." he rolled eyes on me before storming out, leaving me staring at his back.

He strode back in, and I frowned. "Don't let me hear you calling me that name again, okay?" he pressed again. I shook my head.

"Okay, Mr. Gru..." I swallowed the remaining words, catching myself before saying the forbidden name again. "Okay doctor" I smile awkwardly.
