Chapter 25 Chapter 25
Tessa
I rushed to call the doctor who had attended to him yesterday in the operating room. He came and performed some tests on him, I watched him do everything.
After a while, he raised his head with a gentle smile.
"What happened, doctor? Is he awake now?" I asked, and he shook his head, which slumped my shoulder.
"But he will soon," he said. "He has shown signs that his situation is improving, so keep hope for the next two days, he should be out of bed." He explained with a bright smile.
"Thank you, doctor," I bowed my head.
"Keep a close eye on him," he uttered before quickly leaving the room.
I stared at Mr. Carter before walking toward his bed and kneeling beside him, gently grabbing his hand.
"Wake up quickly. Mom and I miss you," I spoke, unaware of when the words slipped from my lips, but I didn't care.
I stood up quickly, walked to the side, pulled out my phone, and dialed my mom's number.
"Hello, Mom," my voice boomed with happiness, and I knew she would be wondering why I was so happy, which I was ready to share with her. I knew she would also be happy, even more than I was.
"You sound happy, any good news?" I knew she would notice the excitement in my voice.
"Mr. Carter," I pronounced.
"What happened to him?" Her voice dropped with anticipation, I knew she was doubting whether to be happy or sad.
"His hand shook, so I called the doctor to check on him, and they gave us assurance that he would be awake in two days to come," I broke the news to Mum.
I could hear the happiness and excitement in her voice as she screamed, "Yes!"
"That's the news, dear. I will also be back in an hour," she replied, and I hung up the call, dancing across the room like a drunken Sharman.
The beep on my phone made me stop, and I walked to check who had messaged me.
"Hi, you didn't show up in school today, any problem?" The message read, and I wondered who could have sent the message, considering it was from an unknown number.
"Who is this, please?" I replied, and immediately the number called me.
"Hello," A voice said, and I knew immediately that it was none other than Leah, but how did she get my number?
"Hello, please, who is this?" I asked, hoping to hear her confirm her identity. What if the person just had a similar voice to hers?
"This is Leah. I called to check on you," she said from the other line, and I nodded my head, even though she couldn't see me.
"Yes, I have something to attend to," I replied, walking toward the window side to catch a glimpse of what was happening outside.
"Hope you're done? Are you coming tomorrow or not?" she asked, and I frowned.
"Tomorrow? Tomorrow is the weekend," I reminded her, and she laughed.
"Yeah, I remember that clearly, but Mr. Daniel said we would be doing our practical tomorrow, and it carries 20 marks. If you refuse to come tomorrow, just say goodbye to 20 marks. He also said tomorrow's attendance would determine whether we enter the exam hall, so better adjust your schedule and find a way to come," she explained, leaving my mouth wide open.
I hadn't gone to school just for today, and all these happenings made me wonder what would have happened if I had missed a whole week.
"Wait," I heard her voice again. "Didn't you check the group chat? I heard Mr. Carter got into an accident," she revealed with a sad tone.
I wasn't supposed to be shocked by the news, but what shocked me more was how she heard.
"Where did you hear that from?" I asked, and she went silent for a while.
"Have you forgotten? Mr. Carter is a popular lecturer in our department. People find ways to look out for those they care about," she explained, and I nodded.
"So, are you coming tomorrow?" she asked.
"I will think about it," I replied. At that moment, my eyes caught Mr. Grumpy outside, and my eyes widened at who I saw with him.
"Leah," I pronounced, forgetting I was still on call with her.
"Yes?" she replied, and I quickly covered my lips.
She was walking with Mr. Grumpy, laughing together, and her phone was still pressed to her ear.
"Where are you?" I asked, hoping she would say she was somewhere far from the hospital.
"I'm in the hospital with my—" I didn't give her a chance to finish before hanging up.
I saw her checking her phone, wondering why I had cut the call short, but she shrugged it off.
She said something to Mr. Grumpy, and he took her hand, and they both walked away.
I frowned, hoping it wasn't what I thought.
Mr. Grumpy can't be Leah's boyfriend, right? He can't be the one who sent that video the other day, can he?
Wait, what if he was the one? Did I have any problem with that? I brushed it off, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't shake off the feeling.
Can Leah date someone like him? But what's it to me? I'm not her parent, am I? Or is there something wrong with that? He's handsome, tall, and every girl's dream, why am I stressing myself?
I walked toward the second bed beside Mr. Carter and rested my body on it. I had to shake off the thought, I had nothing to do with Mr. Grumpy.
I tried to fall asleep, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't stop remembering the scene I saw earlier, and it was giving me an unrestful mind.
Just then, the door swung wide open, revealing Mr. Samuel with a comically distressed face.
"Carter!" he screamed, running toward his bed.
I was supposed to sympathize with him, but his sad expression was so over-the-top that I felt the urge to laugh out loud. However, I knew I had to maintain my composure.
"Good morning, sir," I greeted, and his face shifted toward me.
"Tessa!" he cried out, and I wondered why he was being so dramatic and how he even knew we were there.
"Tessa!" he cried again. Why was he calling me? Couldn't he cry without mentioning my name?
