Chapter 41: Tom’s Shocking Betrayal

The truck’s engine roared as Jake floored it, tires screeching against the asphalt, the factory’s inferno shrinking in the rearview mirror. Sam clutched Lisa’s trembling hand in the backseat, her breaths shallow but steady, her eyes darting between him and Jake. Nick’s black-eyed grin—“We’re the same”—burned in Sam’s mind, his claws still itching from the fight, blood streaking his torn shirt. The bond throbbed, weak but persistent, connecting him to Jake's ragged breathing in front, golden eyes darting to the mirrors, searching for pursuit.

"We ain't clear yet," Jake growled, voice gruff, blood trickling from a gash on his chest where Nick's feral werewolves had ripped him. "Those bastards'll come after us—Nick's not finished."

Sam's belly churned, Nick's barb echoing—faster, sharper, dark echo of what had happened to him (Chapter 33). "What in the devil.?" he hissed, leaning forward, voice sharp. "He was dead—I killed him. How is he back? What are those monsters?

Jake's jaw locked, fists curled around the wheel. "Cobras've been working overtime—rituals, blood magic, some nasty shit. They're building something—using you as the template." His eyes caught Sam's in the rearview mirror, a burst of pride warring with tension. "You're the spark, Sam. They want what you've got.".

Sam recoiled, the spark flaring at Jake's words, a heat he begrudged requiring. "I didn't ask for this," he snarled, pulling Lisa closer, the heat of her body grounding him. "And Lisa—what's their game? Why exist?"

"Bait," Jake replied, voice flat, taking a turn too sharply. "To draw us out—hit where it hurts. They schemed this longer than we knew."

The truck bounced as Jake pulled into a dimly lit lot next to Rufus's warehouse, Tom's hideout since the bar brawl (Chapter 27). Sam's leg throbbed with agony from the factory beam, but he exited, helping Lisa, her step unsteady. Jake followed, claws folding, his shirt in tatters of blood and sweat. "Rufus'll patch her up," he indicated toward the door. "Then we find Nick.".

Sam nodded, the link meeting their resolve, but a restlessness gnawed at him—Nick's black eyes, Ethan's secrets (Chapter 38), Jake's whisper (Chapter 39). He pushed it aside, bringing Lisa inside, the gloomy interior of the warehouse contrasting with the chaos outside. Rufus welcomed them, gray hair tousled, his limp more pronounced as he took Lisa to a cot, complaining about stitches and rest.

But then the atmosphere shifted—a figure stepping out of the darkness, and Sam's breath being caught. Tom was present, alive, his side bandaged from the gunshot, but with no easy smile to be seen, only a hard, cold gaze. "Good you made it," he growled, voice low, eyes scanning between Sam and Jake. "Heard it got nasty.".

Jake's stance hardened, golden eyes narrowing. "You're up," he said, voice cautious. "Rufus said you were out."

"Was," Tom corrected, stepping closer, his hands pushed deep into pockets. "Had time to think—about allegiances, about this mess." His gaze snapped to Sam, a heavy weight behind them that made Sam's claws want to curl. "You're a hell of a fighter, kid. Nick didn't see that coming."

Sam’s chest tightened, Tom’s words from the bar—“Jake already killed for you”—clashing with this calm, detached tone. “What’s going on, Tom?” he asked, voice low, Lisa’s hand slipping from his as he stepped forward. “You’re acting weird.”

Tom's lips curled, a thin smile, and he took a hand from his pocket, a crumpled paper held between his fingers—yellowed, creased, a map of Viper strongholds. "Weird's one way to say it," he tossed the paper at Jake, who caught it, smoothing it with a scowl. "That's it—your safe houses, your trails, your vulnerable areas. Collected it over a period.

Jake snarled, fangs shining, eyes roving over the map, his own voice a snarl. "What in the world is this, Tom?"

Tom turned to him, unwinking, his voice flat, cold. "It's the truth, brother. I've been with the Cobras—whole time. Providing them information, setting you up. Nick's little act tonight? That was my doing."

The warehouse went silent, the air thickening with betrayal. Sam’s heart thudded, Tom’s confession a punch that stole his breath. “You—” he started, voice breaking, stepping toward him. “You were my friend—helped me, warned me about Jake. And you’re with them?”

Tom’s eyes softened, just a flicker, then hardened again. “Wasn’t personal, Sam. You’re a good kid—too good for this shit. But Jake—” He glanced at his brother, a sneer curling his lip. “He’s been drowning us in his obsession with you. The Vipers were losing ground—Cobras offered a way out. Power, control, no more playing second to his little omega project.”

Jake lunged, claws slashing, but Tom dodged, faster than Sam expected, drawing a gun from his waistband and leveling it at Jake’s chest. “Don’t,” Tom warned, voice sharp. “You’re done, Jake. That map’s already with them—Nick’s got your empire by the throat.”

Sam's claws protruded, wolf growling caught between the brother he trusted and the alpha he fought with. "You betrayed us," he said, shivering with rage. "Lisa, me, Jake—all of us. For what? Nick's freaks?

Tom's gaze flickered to Sam, hard, unyielding. "For survival. You still don't understand—Nick's just the start. The Cobras are building something bigger—those werewolves? They're the future. You're in it, Sam, whether you love it or hate it.".

Jake's growl deepened, the bond searing—anger, hurt, a reflection of Sam's own. "You're dead to me," he snarled, moving on him even with the gun, claws out. "You think they'll keep you on? You're a tool—just like they want him to be.".

“Maybe,” Tom said, shrugging, the gun unwavering. “But I’m not the one bleeding out an empire. Nick’s coming—Cobras’ll hit every weak spot on that map. You’re vulnerable, Jake—wide open. And Sam?” His eyes locked onto Sam’s, a shadow of regret there. “You’re the prize they’re all chasing now.”

The warehouse door creaked, Rufus tensing, and Sam's heart racing—Nick, black-eyed werewolves, the Cobras on their tail. Jake's kingdom—safehouses, allies, all of it—outed, crumbling in Tom's treachery. The bond pulsed, Jake's rage pouring into Sam, and he stayed there, a figure in the crossfire, Lisa trembling behind him, the map a death warrant in Jake's hand.
