Chapter 7: You've always been so stubborn
Last night I was able to take Zane's attention away from the man that approached me at the event and I've been thinking of an excuse I could use to leave the house. I had to meet up with Damian, even though his story sounds absurd I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was some truth to it.
I just got out of the shower and my hair was still wet so I tied it up with my towel, the doctor asked I take a glass of celery juice at least once a day so I decided to go downstairs to the kitchen to make it, secretly praying in my heart that Isla wouldn't be there, I really didn't have the strength for her drama this morning.
I got to the kitchen and unsurprisingly, there she was , the gas was on and there were a couple of egg shells on the kitchen counter with an open pack of bacon, I guess she was making breakfast.
She turned her head, glancing over her shoulder and her entire expression changed the moment she set her eyes on me.
“I’m making breakfast for my husband to be and I hate having company in the kitchen. You need to leave,” she completely turned and crossed her arms across her chest. “You need to leave, and you need to leave NOW,” she declared.
It sounded like a threat but I just decided to not say anything, I acted like I didn't hear what she just said and I walked into the kitchen to get my celery out of the fridge. I had barely opened the fridge before she slammed it shut.
“You really don't want to mess with me,” she warned, her voice filled with hatred and bitterness.
“You disgust me, how can someone be so dumb and clueless, you wake up in the hospital with no memory of the past couple of years and a strange man shows up claiming to be your husband, you didn't even question anything, you just followed him like a lost sheep. You probably don't even love him, you're just with him because of his money. You abandoned Damian without even looking back all because he isn't as rich and powerful as Zane, soon I'm going to expose you for who you are , a materialistic leech.”
Everything she was saying was just gibberish to my ears and I was uninterested until she mentioned his name. “You know Damian?”
She scoffed and shook her head. “Everyone knows Damian, even your so called best friend.”
Shawna knew him too?, but she never mentioned anything about him.
“This is the part where you leave, I don't want you in my kitchen,” she snarled.
I wanted to turn and walk away, but that would’ve made me look weak. And I didn't want to appear weak, especially not in front of her.
“I just need to get my celery,” I said, reaching for the fridge again, determined not to back down. But before my fingers could even curl around the handle, a sharp, searing pain ripped through my scalp. Isla’s fist tightened in my hair, yanking me backward with extreme force.
A gasp tore from my throat as I fell backwards, my hands trying to hold on to something. But everything was happening way too fast and in an instant, I crashed onto the floor, landing hard on my backside. Pain shot up my spine, but the real pain was the humiliation I felt as Isla stood above me, smiling victoriously.
But she didn't end there, she flew open the fridge and picked up the celery I was trying to get.
“This is yours right?” She asked and before I could answer, she threw it in my face. “You can have it.”
She let out an evil mocking laugh and I just sat on the ground staring at her with disdain as she stood there laughing almost breathless.
“WHAT'S GOING ON HERE!” Zane's voice tore through the kitchen in anger.
He hurried over to where I sat on the ground, his brows drawn together in concern. Squatting in front of me, he scanned my face, his gaze searching for any sign of pain.
After confirming I was okay, he stormed to where Isla was standing, and grabbed her by her arm. His grip firm and unyielding, she winced in pain but he wasn't fazed.
“I don't care if you're pregnant or if you and my mother are planning some stupid wedding. You mean absolutely nothing to me and that is never going to change and if you ever lay a finger on my wife again or cause her pain in any way, I would make your life a living hell, you would regret the day you were born,” he growled, gripping her arm tightly as he dragged her toward the door. With a hard shove, he sent her stumbling outside, her body hitting the ground and he slammed the door shut without a second glance, cutting her off completely.
He came back to where I was and helped me up. “Baby I'm really sorry about what she did, this is all my fault, but you don't have to worry about this repeating itself again, I'll make sure she leaves in the next couple of hours, I'll prepare a warm bath for you to help you relax.”
“No,” I blurted out. “She can't leave, she's pregnant with your child and the least you can do for her is provide her with a conducive environment throughout her pregnancy till she gives birth, then when you know your baby is okay, you can do whatever you want with her then,”
“Amy you don't understand, Isla is insane, she's a nutcase. She's obsessed with me and she would do anything to get rid of any woman in my life to make sure she has me all to herself. Keeping her here in our house is not safe for you at all and if anything ever happens to you I won't be able to forgive myself.”
“I'm just going to avoid coming in contact with her, 9 months is not a long time, you can do anything you want with her after then.”
He let out a sigh in defeat. “You've always been so stubborn.”
“Who's Damian?” I didn't want to ask him but I just couldn't fight the urge, I was tired of feeling like I was the only one in the dark, I needed answers.
His face twisted with both surprise and displeasure, his jaws tightening. “Why are you asking about Damian.” He spoke through gritted teeth, his tone sharp with quiet anger.
Why was he reacting this way, like Damian was a forbidden name I was never supposed to mention. “For some reason, the name keeps popping up in my mind and Isla also mentioned his name.”
“That bich!” He growled, his fists tightening into a ball.
“Who is he?” I demanded, he was angry but I wasn't fazed by it.
“He's no one, you don't have to worry about him.”
“I never said I was worrying about him, I just want to know who he is,” I demanded.
“He's a mistake you made in the past, a mistake you don't have to worry about anymore.”
“What do you mean a mistake, what kind of mistake?” I asked him, but he didn't say anything, almost like it was something he didn't want to talk about.
“Remember the guy who approached me at the event we went to yesterday,”
His face became serious as he stared directly into my eyes. “Don't tell me that was Damian.”
There was something off about the way he was reacting to this person, it was almost like his name was poison, a bad curse that should never be talked about but from the short interaction I had with him he didn't look like a bad person that had any bad intentions.
“It was him wasn't it?” He asked, even though he already had the answer to his question.
“Yes.”
"Amy, you need to stay away from him," he said, his voice firm and filled with urgency. "He's dangerous. He’s not just trouble, he’s a threat."
I tried to avert my gaze, but he caught my face gently yet firmly, forcing me to meet his eyes. There was no trace of hesitation in them, only raw concern and something else, fear.
"You have to promise me," he said, his grip tightening slightly. "Promise me you won’t go near him again. And if you ever see him anywhere, you tell me immediately. No hesitation. No second-guessing. Do you understand?"
I couldn't understand why he was being so defensive, he wasn't telling me who Damian was or why I shouldn't be in contact with him. Was he scared of me finding out the truth? Am I really married to Damian and did he take me from him?
“Yes,” I agreed. But it was at that moment I made the decision that I was going to meet up with Damian at all cost, I needed to hear his side, I needed to know the truth.
