Chapter 106 Her new company

Chapter 106 Her new company

Daphne glanced at the clock several more times before finally lying down. She was still hoping BK would come home just like he said. But it was already the second night she spent in their house waiting for him, and he still hadn’t returned. She didn’t want to leave their home without talking to him first, especially since he told her to wait for his return. But why wasn’t he here yet? She couldn’t stay in their home, this sad and empty. She felt like she was going insane wondering what he was doing. She was overthinking everything. Maybe it would be better if they weren’t under the same roof for now.

She could still feel how much her husband loved her, but space was what they both needed. She needed rest. And right now, she could feel the exhaustion from everything she’d been through. She hadn’t truly recovered from all the pain, and now this new problem was dragging her down even more. It was like she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.

She grabbed her phone and finally decided to message him to ask when he was coming home.

Not even three minutes later, her phone lit up. A smile crossed her face when her husband’s name appeared. Maybe she should’ve texted him yesterday if he was going to respond that fast. Maybe she just kept hoping he would message her first.

Her brow furrowed when she saw the preview notification, which was cut off. She had to tap on it to read the full message.

Her grip tightened on the bedsheet as she read the whole thing. BK wanted to bring his child and Amber to stay in their home once they left the hospital.

Her hand flew to her chest. That pain again. She thought she could finally rest after talking things out with her husband. She thought she’d let go of the hurt. But here was another blow.

Why did it have to be in their house? Couldn’t it be another place? Where was his respect for her? What would people say about them? What if her parents found out?

She didn’t realize she was already trembling, her knees giving out, her body shaking, as she dropped the phone. Then she broke into sobs.

She was already about to leave for good, yet BK still had to make it more painful. It looked like she didn’t even need to ask him to choose anymore. He had already chosen to house Amber and their baby here. It was clear he was choosing Amber over her. She no longer had any say in their home. Since she was already planning to leave, maybe that gave him the freedom to decide.

She let out a long sigh. Her husband truly had no respect for her.

She didn’t waste any more time. She immediately packed her things.

The next day, she called her brother, since he hadn’t been answering her earlier. But she had already explained everything in a text.

“Are you sure, my little sister? Why not just stay here in Bergen? Your husband won’t be able to enter this country again. I’d feel better if you stayed here.”

His irritation toward her husband was clear in his voice.

“Max…”

“Don’t pay attention to me. Your husband just pisses me off. But seriously, are you sure about this?”

“I prefer it there, Max. Please?”

She heard him sigh on the other end. “Okay. Please be safe for us.”

“I will. Thank you.”

“Should I tell Papa?” he asked after a pause.

“Please, don’t. I just need your house and your connections. No need to tell Papa. I don’t want to burden Mama either. Let them enjoy life right now. No need for them to worry about me. You’re the only one I can count on for this. Please, Max? Siblings can keep secrets, right?”

“Yeah, yeah. But don’t go there alone. Damn it! That place is so remote. You’ll have to hike up a mountain just to get a signal. You need someone with you. Just that, please. I won’t feel at ease unless you have company.”

She didn’t answer right away.

“And who exactly are you sending with me? One of your AO men? Hell no, Max! They’re loyal to BK too since your families are friends.”

“He’s not part of the organization, little sis. Just a close friend of mine.”

“Who?”

“It’s—” Max didn’t get to finish because the call suddenly dropped. It must’ve been his line. Her internet was stable.

She sat on the bed and looked back at her phone.

Not even five minutes later, the doorbell rang. It couldn’t be her husband. He hadn’t been home for two days. Their baby was still in critical condition.

It hurt that he hadn’t come home like he said. The house felt too empty. His mother did visit but didn’t stay long. She apologized for everything. Even she was shocked by the news.

She slowly made her way downstairs to see who it was.

She hadn’t even stepped outside when her brother called again.

“He’s right outside your house, little sis,” he said as soon as she answered.

Her brows furrowed as she saw who was standing there.

“P-Professor Emmanuel?” She hadn’t ended the call yet.

“You already know each other?” her brother asked on the other end.

“Yes. He’s my professor at the university.”

“Great! Then I won’t need to introduce him to you. Don’t worry, he’s harmless. Trust me.”

“O-okay,” she said to her brother.

She looked at her professor, who was waving at her. He clearly had a lot to explain. That’s when it finally sank in. He and Max really did know each other…

“HEY!” DAPHNE FLINCHED when Emmanuel spoke in front of her.

It snapped her back to the present. Just moments ago, she was so focused on watching him work on the treehouse. Now, he was already standing in front of her, making her recall how they ended up spending these past four months together.
