Chapter 48 Soren’s Gamble
Chapter 48 Soren’s Gamble
Soren watched the numbers falling on his tablet, his expression tightening with every rapid drop.
STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY: 82% → 81% → 80%
He stood frozen against the wall, still partially held by Lucien’s invisible force, but his eyes were locked on the data streaming across the screen. His usual calm had completely shattered. Sweat beaded on his forehead. His jaw clenched so hard I could see the muscles standing out.
“Elias…” he whispered, voice strained. “The battle itself is destabilizing you faster than anything before. Every second this fight continues, the Core pushes harder. It’s feeding on the conflict. On your fear. On Lucien’s presence.”
I stayed on the floor, breathing raggedly, pain radiating through my ribs from where Lucien had slammed me into the wall. “Then make it stop! Both of you! I can’t take this anymore. I feel like I’m tearing apart from the inside!”
Lucien stood a few meters away, still perfectly composed, watching me with that calm, fascinated smile. “Let it tear, container. The old you needs to break so the new you can emerge.”
Soren’s eyes flicked between the tablet and me. His voice grew desperate. “If the fight continues, containment will fail completely. The Core is accelerating too fast. At this rate, you’ll hit critical breach in minutes, not days.”
I looked up at him, tears cutting through the dust on my face. “Then what do I do? I can’t fight him. I can’t run. I can’t even stand up properly. Everything I do makes it worse. Everything I feel makes it worse.”
Soren’s hand trembled as he gripped the tablet tighter. For a long moment, he stared at the rapidly dropping numbers. Then something in his eyes changed, a desperate, final decision.
He reached into his coat and pulled out a small black device with a single red button.
“I’m sorry, Elias,” he whispered. “I never wanted it to come to this.”
Lucien’s smile faltered for the first time. “Ashcroft… what are you doing?”
Soren looked at me one last time, fear and determination mixing in his storm-cloud eyes. “I’m choosing you over everything else.”
He pressed the button.
A mechanical voice suddenly announced over the facility-wide speakers, cold and emotionless:
\[SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIATED.\]
\[ALL PERSONNEL EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY.\]
\[DETONATION IN T-MINUS TEN MINUTES.\]
Red warning lights began flashing faster across the entire corridor. A new siren joined the chaos, deeper, more urgent. The building itself seemed to groan in response as hidden systems powered up.
Soren dropped the tablet and staggered toward me, the invisible force holding him finally breaking as Lucien’s attention shifted. “Elias, we have to move. Now. This is the only way to stop him from taking you.”
I stared at him in shock, still on the floor. “You… you just set the whole facility to self-destruct? For me?”
Lucien’s expression darkened for the first time. “You fool. You would rather destroy everything than let him reach his true potential?”
Soren pulled me to my feet, supporting my weight as my legs threatened to give out. “I would rather burn this place to the ground than let you turn him into a weapon. Elias is not your property. He’s not the Association’s experiment. He’s a person. And I’m giving him a chance to stay one.”
The mechanical voice continued counting down:
\[T-MINUS NINE MINUTES FIFTY SECONDS.\]
I leaned heavily on Soren as we started moving down the corridor. Pain flared through my ribs with every step. The pressure in my chest kept building, but I tried to breathe through it, focusing on Soren’s voice.
“Why?” I asked him, voice breaking. “Why would you do this? You’ve spent so long studying me. Testing me. Why destroy everything now?”
Soren kept moving, supporting me as best he could. “Because I finally understand what I helped create. I helped put that thing inside you. I helped push you to this point. If the only way to give you a chance at staying human is to burn it all down… then I’ll burn it all down.”
Lucien’s voice echoed behind us, calm but carrying through the hallway. “You can’t run forever, container. The Core inside you is waking up. Soon, even you won’t be able to stop it.”
Soren didn’t look back. He just kept moving, guiding me toward the emergency evacuation route as the self-destruct countdown continued.
\[T-MINUS NINE MINUTES THIRTY SECONDS.\]
I felt the ancient presence inside me stir again, reacting to the new chaos, almost excited by the destruction Soren had unleashed.
And for the first time, I wondered if running was even possible anymore.
Not from Lucien.
Not from the Association.
But from what I was becoming.
