Chapter 43 The First Strike

Chapter 43 The First Strike
Silence stretched for a long second between the three of us.

I felt the pressure building inside my chest again, heavy and restless, like the Core was waking up fully and testing the cracks in the seal. My hands trembled at my sides as I stared at Lucien, the man who claimed he knew exactly what I was becoming.

Soren stood rigid in front of me, gun still raised. “Elias, stay behind me. Don’t look at him. Don’t listen to him.”

Lucien smiled faintly, tilting his head as if amused by the scene. Then, without any warning, he raised one hand casually, palm facing upward.

The lights in the corridor dimmed instantly.

The red emergency glow faded to a weak, flickering amber, as if the entire facility itself was holding its breath.

Soren’s voice rose sharply. “Elias, move! Get back now!”

But my body refused to react.

I stood frozen in place, muscles locked, as if invisible chains had wrapped around every limb. My heart hammered wildly, but I couldn’t even take a single step. The pressure in my chest surged stronger, the ancient presence inside me responding to Lucien’s gesture with dark curiosity.

“What… what are you doing to me?” I gasped, voice strained. “I can’t move. Soren… I can’t move!”

Lucien’s smile widened just slightly, calm and controlled. “I’m simply showing you what true control looks like, container. You’ve been fighting so hard to stay human. But you don’t have to fight anymore.”

Soren shouted again, louder this time. “Elias! Fight it! Break his hold! You’re stronger than this!”

I tried. I really tried. I pushed against the invisible force holding me in place, but it felt like trying to move through solid concrete. My legs wouldn’t budge. My arms stayed locked at my sides. Tears of frustration burned in my eyes.

“I’m trying!” I cried out. “It’s like my body isn’t mine anymore. It feels like he’s holding me from the inside!”

Lucien took one slow step closer, still holding his hand raised. “You see? Even now, part of you wants this. Part of you is tired of fighting. Tired of being afraid. Tired of being small.”

An invisible force suddenly slammed into me.

It hit like a truck made of pure pressure, driving me backward with brutal force. My back crashed into the concrete wall behind me. The impact cracked the reinforced surface, spiderwebbing outward from where my body had struck. Pain exploded across my spine and ribs as I slid down the wall, gasping for air.

Soren fired his gun.

The shot echoed loudly in the corridor, but Lucien didn’t even flinch. The bullet stopped midair inches from his chest, then dropped harmlessly to the floor with a soft clink.

Lucien lowered his hand slowly, still smiling that calm, knowing smile.

“Good,” he said softly, almost gently. “You’re still fragile.”

I groaned, trying to push myself up from the floor, but my body felt heavy and uncooperative. The cracks in the wall behind me spread further, dust raining down onto my shoulders. The ancient presence inside my chest pulsed with dark amusement, almost enjoying the demonstration.

Soren moved forward, gun still raised. “Stay away from him, Lucien. I won’t warn you again.”

Lucien didn’t even look at the weapon. His eyes stayed on me, soft and intense. “You keep fighting so hard to protect him, Doctor. But deep down, you know the truth. He was never meant to stay contained. He was meant to become. And I can help him do that without all this unnecessary pain.”

I coughed, tasting blood in my mouth from the impact. “Why are you doing this? Why do you want me so badly?”

Lucien took another step closer, his voice dropping to a gentle whisper. “Because I’ve seen what you can become, Elias. I’ve seen the versions of you across timelines where you stopped resisting. Where you embraced the Core. Where you became something beautiful. Something eternal. I want that version of you. The world needs that version of you.”

Soren fired again. This time the bullet actually struck Lucien’s shoulder, but the man didn’t even flinch. No blood. No reaction. He simply glanced down at the spot where the bullet had hit, then looked back at me.

“You see?” Lucien said calmly. “Even your protector can’t stop what’s coming. But I can help you control it. I can help you become more than just a container. I can help you become the new Abyss itself.”

I felt the pressure in my chest building again, stronger than before. The Core responded to Lucien’s words like it was hearing music. My vision started to blur at the edges.

“I don’t want to become anything,” I whispered, tears falling freely now. “I just want to be me. Please… just let me be me.”

Lucien extended his hand toward me, palm open. “Come with me, container. Let me show you what real power feels like. What real freedom feels like.”

Soren stepped fully in front of me again, gun trained on Lucien’s head. “Over my dead body.”

Lucien’s smile never faded.

“That,” he said softly, “can be arranged.”

The corridor lights flickered harder. The ancient presence inside me surged forward, eager and hungry.

And I realized with chilling clarity that this wasn’t just another fight.

This was the beginning of something much worse.
