Chapter 44 Controlled Violence

Chapter 44 Controlled Violence
Dust settled across the corridor floor like gray snow as I struggled to breathe.

Pain spread through my ribs with every shallow gasp, sharp and deep, like something had cracked inside me when Lucien slammed me into the wall. I pushed myself up slowly, back against the concrete, trying to steady my trembling legs.

Lucien walked forward without hurry, his footsteps echoing steadily in the red-lit hallway. Each step was deliberate, calm, unhurried, like he had all the time in the world.

Soren lay a few meters away, still conscious but struggling to move after whatever force Lucien had used on him. “Elias… don’t… engage him,” he gasped, trying to reach for his gun.

Lucien didn’t even glance at Soren. His twilight eyes stayed locked on me, that faint, knowing smile still playing on his lips.

I pressed a hand against my aching ribs, wincing. “Why are you doing this? If you wanted me dead, you could have killed me already. What do you want?”

Lucien stopped a few steps away, tilting his head slightly. “Kill you? No, container. That would be such a waste. I’m not trying to kill you. I’m testing you. Seeing how much of the Core has truly awakened inside that fragile body of yours.”

I felt a chill run down my spine. “Testing me? By smashing me into a wall? By freezing people? By breaking everything around you?”

He chuckled softly, the sound low and pleasant. “Pain is the fastest teacher. Fear is the best catalyst. You’ve been suppressing the Core for too long, Elias. I’m simply… encouraging it to come out and play.”

I tried to stand straighter, but pain flared through my side. “I don’t want it to come out. I want it to stay locked away. I want to be normal. I want to stop hurting people every time I feel something.”

Lucien took another slow step closer. “Normal is what weak people settle for. You were never meant to be normal. You were chosen. The vault saw something in you… the same thing I see now. Potential. Power. Evolution.”

Soren managed to push himself up on one elbow behind Lucien. “Don’t listen to him, Elias. He’s manipulating you. This is what his kind does. They find people like you and turn them into monsters.”

Lucien glanced over his shoulder at Soren for the first time. “And what have you done, Doctor? Chained him. Tested him. Watched his integrity drop while you took notes. At least I’m honest about what I want from him.”

I felt the pressure in my chest building again, the Core responding to Lucien’s presence like it was hearing music. “Why me? Why do you care so much about what’s inside me?”

Lucien stopped inches away from me. The air between us distorted slightly, like heat rising from pavement. I could feel the ancient power radiating from him, controlled, precise, overwhelming.

“Because you are the first one who might actually survive the full merge,” he whispered. “The others broke. Their minds shattered. Their bodies rejected the Core. But you… you’re holding on. You’re fighting. And that makes you perfect.”

I tried to back up, but the wall was already behind me. “I don’t want to be perfect. I don’t want any of this. Just leave me alone.”

Lucien raised one hand slowly, not touching me, but the air between us grew heavier. “Show me what’s inside you.”

The pressure exploded.

My back arched as the Core surged forward, slamming against the seal with brutal force. I cried out, sliding down the wall as pain ripped through my body. The lights above us flickered wildly. Cracks spread across the ceiling.

Soren shouted something, but his voice sounded far away.

Lucien knelt in front of me, still smiling that calm, terrifying smile. “There it is. Beautiful. Don’t fight it, Elias. Let it breathe. Let it show me what you’re truly capable of.”

I gasped for air, tears streaming down my face. “Stop… please stop… I can’t… I can’t control it when you do this…”

The ancient presence roared inside me, pushing harder, wanting to break free and answer Lucien’s call.

Lucien leaned closer, his voice a gentle whisper. “Show me, container. Show me everything.”

The pressure reached its peak.

And for one terrifying moment, I felt the seal crack just a little bit more.
