Chapter 17 Logan
Chapter 17 Logan
I watch as Sunny strides into the room followed by Justin, Marcus, Theo, Riley, Alison and Garrett bringing up the rear.
“They would only allow six people in at a time.” Justin says a bit sheepishly. Then he looks at Garrett and Alison.
Alison steps forward and places a hand on my arm. “I just came to see that you were okay and to thank you for having an on-site medic. Without him, I might not be here. So, thank you.” She pats my arm then turns and gives Justin a quick kiss on the cheek, before she turns back to Sunny, “I’m going to wait outside, Chet is biting at the bit to come in.” She says with a chuckle and no sooner is she out the door does Chet and his enormous mass come barreling in.
“Holy Shit, Logan.” He shakes his head and grins. “I'm glad you are still with us; you would be so proud of your wife here.” She slaps Sunny on the back and she leans a bit forward with a huge smile and blush staining her cheeks.
I look at her with my eyebrows raised.
“Oh yeah,” Garrett chimes in with a sly grin himself. “She told her father where to stick it.” He chuckles and then continues. “Also, we were able to locate and return your ex and her father to their home, plus we have all the warrants needed to go through Brighten’s books and Sunny’s parents.” He looks away for a moment too long for my liking.
“What is it you are not telling me?” I gruffly demand.
“Well,” He looks at me and then rubs the back of his neck, “With Brighten’s death, there is not much we can do. Unless we find out that he was not the only one in his group to do the dirty deeds.” He looks at Sunny then at Justin. Justin nods at him and motions to go on. “He had no children and his nephew Collins is the sole heir to his empire and the kid is smart as a whip and he has been nothing but accommodating.”
“Hmmm, so, maybe this will be the end of it.” I mumble.
“Well…” Garrett rubs his neck again.
“Spill it.”
“He wants to meet with you and Sunny personally to apologize for everything his Uncle put you two through.” He says in a low voice.
“Okay, and why is that not a good idea?”
This time Sunny is the one to step up, “Because I have met Collins, he may come off as spineless, but he is anything but. He has the potential to be worse than his Uncle and I am not sure I want him to see you like this.”
I look up at her and take her hand in mine and bring it to my lips. “My love, I know even in this state, if he is wishing to be open and honest, then I have nothing to worry about.” I look around at all my guys and say, “Besides, I have the best of the best around me and I know that he won’t stand a chance, just like his Uncle before him.” This gets me a chuckle from the room.
“Okay, well he is out in the waiting room and would like to see you.” Garrett says and I see Justin and Chet stiffen.
“Go ahead and get him.” I say, then I look at Marcus and Riley, “Can you two keep watch at the door once he gets here?” They nod and head for the door, Garrett follows and once he is gone, I turn to Chet, “Make sure your recorder is on.” He nods and pats his pocket.
Sunny bends down and kisses my forehead, a knock sounds at the door and in walks Collins and I can only assume his lawyer. Because he is short and stocky, with mouse brown hair and gray eyes, and a dark brown suit with a briefcase to match.
“Hello Mr. and Mrs. Marshall,” Collins says in a stronger voice than I was expecting. “I want to extend my sincerest apologies and hope that in the future we can put this past us, for I have a great need for some of your help.” He turns to his lawyer and nods.
The lawyer moves to the small table and opens his case, he takes out what looks like a contract of some sort. He hands it to Collins and then steps back.
Collins looks at Sunny and smiles, “This is for you,” He holds the paper out to her, and she takes it with an odd expression. “It is the marriage contract your father and my uncle brokered before you were legal, and I felt you should see it and know that I never want to be like him.” He looks so sincere and heartbroken at the same time.
Sunny takes the paper, but she doesn’t look at it; instead, she hands it to Chet and then takes Collins into a big bear hug. “I forgive you of it all, I remember you from when I was younger, and I will admit I was worried about you. But seeing this and seeing the sincerity in your eyes and hearing it in your voice, I know that you will be nothing like him.” She says loud enough for all of us to hear.
He gives her a pat on the back trying to be respectful of not only me, but of her as well. “Thank you Sunny, I will do everything in my power to keep you feeling that way.” He looks at me and says, “Mr. Marshall, I do have a great many ideas and feel that the new direction I want to take Brighten Enterprises would benefit both of us. I am skilled with computer science and my background is not only finance, but in the creative side of software as well.” He looks at his lawyer again and nods. The lawyer once again pulls a small booklet out of his case and hands it to him. “In here you will see my latest designs, I just need help with fleshing out the details.”
I look at him then the booklet and accept it from him, I give it a quick once over and it looks good. I look up at him and see him smiling, I return the smile and say, “We might be able to come to an agreement, but it might have to wait a week if that is okay?”
“Oh, yeah, totally.” He grins like a loon and then looks around the room. “I can’t wait, I know I am new at this whole running a company and will stumble a lot, but my dad always told me that, ‘if you surround yourself with great people and ones who challenge you to be better, you will be.’” He looks down and I can see he is fighting the memory, “It was the last thing he said to me, he died two weeks later.” He sighs, “I never did find out what happened, Uncle Lucas, said it was sudden and that was it.”
Garrett coughed into his hand and all eyes went to him. He looks at Collins, “I can shed some light onto that one, however, we never had enough to convict.” He says in a low tone.
“You know what happened to him?” Collins asks with hope in his eyes.
Garrett nods and then says, “Come by my office and I will show you everything we have. But I do have to warn you, it is not pretty, and you might not like who we know was responsible.”
Collins nods and then looks around, “I understand.” He looks down and then back up at Garrett and asks, “Did this have anything to do with my Uncle taking over my dad’s businesses after his death?”
Garrett just nods and places a hand on his shoulders. Collins seems to deflate a bit at this. “If you want, we can do that now.” Garrett adds and Collins nods. Garrett looks at me and I nod.
He steps close to me and gives me a half hug and then turns to Sunny and scoops her up and says, “Glad you are okay sis, now keep him in line while I am gone.”
Her laughter fills the room and I glare at him and tell him, “Go! Ya asshole.” But even I couldn’t keep the laughter out of my voice and soon the whole room is belly laughing.
Garrett leads Collins and his lawyer to the door. Sunny looks at me and smiles then Justin and Chet say in unison, “We are gonna go, see ya in a bit.” Neither of us look at them as they all leave my room.
“Well Wife, we are finally alone.” I say full of lust.
She just smiles and moves to the door and locks it. Then turns back to me and drops her clothes to the floor and struts to me. Oh yeah, my life is perfect.
The End
