Chapter 36 The Thing He Feared Most Next To Death
Chapter 36 The Thing He Feared Most Next To Death
"I heard Ethan went to Canada with Hazel," Shaun said, as they were having a coffee in their favorite coffee shop. Moriah just shrugged her shoulders, trying not to look affected. But deep within she's bitter and beaten.
Shaun held her hand and said, "Moriah, give me a chance, divorce him now."
A bitter smile touched her lips. "Shaun, when you left me that day, there was no turning back. You pushed me to this hell of a marriage and there's no way out. He doesn't want a divorce," Moriah pulled her hand.
"I'll help you," Shaun doesn't want to accept defeat.
"No, I won't divorce him," Moriah's eyes became blurry as tears pooled her eyes.
"Do you love him, Moriah?" The words left a bitter taste in his tongue.
"I do," her shoulder shook as she cried.
It was a huge blow to Shaun, he had never thought that their love for more than a decade was reduced to nothing.
He had only himself to be blamed. If he hadn't let lust rule him, they're happily married now. Moriah wouldn't be crying now. He had caused this pain in her.
"Will you still love him despite the fact that he was just using you to get even with me?" Shaun probed further. Moriah looked at him. "Shaun, I already knew it, but that didn't stop this stupid heart to beat for him."
"I'm sorry, Moriah. It's all my fault. How can I make it up to you?" The enormous guilt engulfed Shaun to despair. "Let's just be friends, Shaun. We can't go back to the previous us, but we can still be friends. Remember, we were friends before we started dating. Shaun, you've been a huge part of my life. But my heart already belongs to Ethan now, "Moriah felt one huge rock was lifted from her shoulder. The only remaining boulder in her shoulder is Hazel.
Shaun smiled bitterly, her love for him is just a distant memory now. He now belongs to her past, but Ethan is her present and he is sure that Ethan will remain in her heart forever.
"Okay, friends," he offered his hand for a handshake.
"Friends," Moriah took his hand and they shook hands.
"By the way, when are you going to China?" Shaun asked.
"How did you know about it?" A frown settled on Moriah's face.
"Zachary told me that Cindy mentioned to him that you're invited by a medical university in Shanghai," he said, smiling.
"My departure is tomorrow," she said and had a sip of her coffee.
"When I've got time, I'm going to visit you. Is that alright?"
"Yes, it's alright, but I'm telling you, be prepared to receive an earful. Let me warn you, Baba's kung fu is superb," Moriah chuckled.
"I think I'm busy and can't visit you," Shaun grinned.
They said goodbye when Moriah received a phone call that her mom and dad had arrived at the mansion.
"Mama, baba," Moriah scurried towards her parents and threw herself on them. She didn't realize that she started sobbing.
"Hey, what's wrong, darling?" Anastacia anxiously asked. She had never seen Moriah this emotional before even after Shaun abandoned her at the altar.
Moriah wiped her tears and lied, "It's tears of joy, eventually I will be seeing Shanghai after years of longing."
"Don't tell me you plan to stay there and won't come back," Jianyu said.
"Baba, I won't do that, you know. My husband will be waiting for me to come back," Moriah blinked back her tears. "Madam, excuse me, Mr Miller is on the phone," George said, Moriah didn't want to answer the phone.
"Go and talk to your husband," Jianyu said when she wasn't moving.
She answered the phone, albeit with much hesitation.
"Hello," she said emotionlessly.
"Moriah, why don't you answer my call? I've called you everyday but you aren't answering any of my calls," Moriah could hear her husband's frustrated tone.
"I was busy," she answered curtly, Ethan could make out her detached and distant tone.
"Moriah, I made my calls when you were no longer at the hospital. Where do you and Cindy go after work?" He sounded jealous.
Moriah snorted and said, "Are you suspecting that I found a lover?"
"No, I don't mean that," Ethan defensively said.
Moriah froze when she heard a saccharine voice calling Ethan.
She abruptly put down the handset. The phone rang again, but Moriah didn't answer it and turned off the ringer. When she returned to the guest room, her phone was ringing. Moriah fished out her phone and declined the call and blocked Ethan's number.
"Mama, baba, rest first. I will call you when dinner is ready," she picked up her bag and went to hers and Ethan's bedroom.
She hugged herself as she felt cold and empty. She closed her eyes to feel his embrace, but opened her eyes again as the image that came across her mind was Ethan and Hazel entangled under the sheet.
Ethan threw his phone as his call could not get through. The phone in the mansion was ringing, and no one was answering. He was sure that the ringer had been turned off. As for Moriah's phone, he knew his number had been blacklisted.
Ethan called his assistant Cameron.
"Call my wife," Ethan said as he cradled his head.
"What am I going to tell her?" Cameron asked, beads of sweat appeared on his balding head.
"Give your phone to me," Ethan stretched his arm.
Cameron reluctantly unlocked his iPhone and gave it to him.
For the umpteenth time Ethan called, he sighed as Moriah answered the call eventually.
"Hello," her melodious voice came through.
"Moriah, please don't hang up the phone," as Ethan said those words he heard a disconnect tone. Ethan hurled the phone and it bounced after it kissed the wall before finally landing on the floor.
Hurriedly, heartbroken over his phone, Cameron picked up his phone.
"Make a call to get the plane ready, we're heading back to London tonight," he barked.
"Sir, my phone is broken," he said, showing his broken phone.
"Buy a new one. I'll pay for it," he said as he prowled like a hungry lion.
"Thank you, sir," he said and turned to leave.
"Where are you going?" Ethan growled, Cameron halted.
"Buy a phone so I can make a call?" He grinned.
"Call," he said, handing his phone to Cameron.
Cameron took the phone from Ethan's. He looked at him and asked, "Sir, what's your pin number?"
"My wedding date," he said, something vague flickered in his eyes as he mentioned it.
"Sir, Captain Kendall said that there's a winter storm coming, all flights today and the next two days had been cancelled," Cameron reported to him after the call.
Ethan banged his hand on the table. He swept away everything that was on his huge table.
Hazel rushed into the room upon hearing the commotion and hugged Ethan from behind.
He extricated himself from her embrace and bellowed, "Get out!"
Cameron obeyed right away and left the room in a hurry while Hazel stayed.
"What are you still doing here? Get out!" He yelled and pointed at the door.
Hazel stared at him with an aggrieved look and left afterwards.
His frustration stemmed from his longing for Moriah, he had been calling her for days, but she always rejected his call.
'By keeping that woman beside you, you are pushing your wife away,' his father's words rang in his mind.
He pulled his hair as the word he had tried to avoid came across his mind. DIVORCE. That's the word he feared most next to death.
