Chapter 35 Used To His Grumpiness
Chapter 35 Used To His Grumpiness
"Let's eat," Brandon said, sensing that Ethan would explode at any minute if the discussion about children continues.
"Anyway, Moriah, I heard that you are a surgeon and one of the youngest surgeons in the UK. How did that happen?" Brandon's admiration for Moriah was apparent.
"Ahmm... I - I had an academic acceleration." She stuttered, she didn't know how to respond to admiration without blushing or stuttering.
"How? I mean... how did you manage such an academic feat?" He was fascinated when he heard about her from Fiona.
"Er... Being an only child, my parents taught me Chinese characters and the English alphabet when I was one. At two I was able to read and write."
"Wow! So you didn't play with children or toys?" Brandon asked.
"My parents are disciplined people. They made a schedule of my everyday activities, they made sure that I would still be able to enjoy life as a kid. So I have time to play and time to study. But, I find studying more interesting than playing with dolls, so rather than playing I would read books."
"What kind of books do you read? Novel? " Fiona asked, she frowned at her silly question, definitely it wasn't a novel.
"Academic books," she bowed her head. She might think that she's weird.
"Definitely," Fiona chuckled. "Have you ever read a romance novel?" Fiona's curiosity was piqued.
"No," she bowed her head.
Fiona chuckled, "I see... had you ever had a boyfriend before marrying Ethan?"
"Mom! My wife needs to eat," Moriah looked at Ethan, thankful that he talked.
"Oh yes, of course, let's eat."
About five minutes later.
"Excuse me," he stood up.
"You haven't finished your dinner, son," Fiona anxiously said.
"I'm already full," he turned and left the dining hall.
Moriah blinked, his abrupt mood swing, throwing her completely off guard.
"I'm really sorry for my son's behavior," Brandon said as he noticed her hand quavered.
"He's slightly moody when things in the company didn't go as planned," Fiona said to appease Moriah.
"Don't worry mom and dad, I'm used to his grumpiness," Moriah giggled, she made sure that it sounded real.
After the meal, Moriah, Fiona and Brandon talked while they had their tea. Moriah fought to keep attention on Fiona and Brandon and not to think about Ethan.
"Dear, you have to retire for the night. Ethan might be waiting for you now," Fiona was concerned about Moriah and Ethan's relationship. She felt that their relationship was hanging in the balance.
"Good night dad and mom," she said and stood up.
Dismayed that Ethan was not in their room, she went straight to the bathroom. She brushed her teeth with tears streaming down her cheeks. She hates that she became emotionally wrecked.
She took the medical book she had been reading. She was about to read the book when the door swung open and Ethan came in.
Smothering the urge to look at him she opened her book and started reading.
Ethan went to the bathroom and came out wearing sweatpants and a white t-shirt. He laid down on his side of the bed, his back at her.
Fighting her tears to roll down, she blinked several times. She stopped reading when she couldn't absorb anything. Upon laying down on the bed, Ethan pulled her to him.
"We're going back to London tomorrow, I've got to fly to Canada," his words undid her.
She silently wept. Secretly wiping her face. She wouldn't let him know that she's crying.
"Alright," she was thankful that her voice didn't sound nasal.
She waited for him to kiss her head or nuzzle her hair as he usually does but he didn't. She felt his breathing become even and his grip on her waist loosened.
That night, sleep became elusive to Moriah.
'I am not ready to be a father' he said. Perhaps he cryptically said that he didn't want a child with her. And that he only wants a child with Hazel.
He also changed his mind about spending time with her and decided to fly to Canada after a call he received from Hazel and the conversation with his parents regarding children.
'You are a fool, believing that an enemy will turn into a lover.' She told herself.
It was already dawn when Moriah eventually drifted off to sleep.
Her sleep was cut short when she felt warm, soft lips grazing her shoulder. Ethan was half covering her body.
She softly sighed at each soft kiss, he showered on her collarbones.
'I'm not ready to be a father,' his words echoed dizzily in her head.
"I'm sleepy," she successfully pushed him away using all her strength and turned her back to him. She forced herself to go back to sleep and succeeded.
It was already eight in the morning when she woke up. She immediately got up from the bed and had a shower when she remembered that they have to leave for London today.
"There you are," Fiona said when Moriah was coming down the stairs.
"Good morning mom," said Moriah, she still gave her bright smile to her despite her somber mood.
"Let's have breakfast, Ethan had his breakfast at the study as he had some things to do. Brandon just left, he has a business meeting.
It's just you and me having breakfast," Fiona tucked her arm in Moriah's and led her to the dining room.
As soon as they sat, a servant came in.
"Madam, I'm sorry to disturb you, but I need to seek advice from you regarding the task you gave," the servant said apologetically.
"Alright," she nodded and looked at Moriah, "I'm sorry dear."
"It's okay, mom," Moriah said.
Moriah could hardly taste the food she was eating. Her taste buds seemed to sympathize with her aching heart.
"Are you done?" She heard his voice that left her heart leaping and her pulse galloping like a horse.
She turned to look at him and her stupid heart went wild. 'Stupid heart, your only function is to pump blood' she said.
Instead of shying away, she met his inscrutable gaze head-on, with chin tilted defiantly, eyes sparkling, and fists clenched.
"Yes," her monosyllabic answer to him. She walked up to him.
"Let's go," he held her elbow and steered her.
"Our private jet is ready, so you're going to send me to the airport first before you head back home," Ethan said while his eyes were on his phone.
'Home?' Moriah frowned, it won't be a home without love. At first it was a loveless marriage and eventually, a one sided love. However, it won't go beyond there. It would remain there.
In under two hours, they reached the airport.
"We're here, sir," said the chauffeur.
"Get my luggage," Ethan said.
When the chauffeur came out of the car. Ethan pulled Moriah and kissed her senselessly. Her lips were swollen when he released her.
"I will call you everyday," Ethan said, nevertheless Moriah didn't take it seriously.
She didn't want to hold onto his promises because he won't do it.
"Do you want to say something?" He asked her while he brushed his thumb on her swollen lips.
"Nothing," she looked away.
Ethan was expecting her to say that she's going to miss him. And her answer made him morose.
"Alright," he got out of the car.
In a while, Moriah turned to look at her departing husband. Her gaze never strayed far from him, only to witness Hazel
hugging him. Hazel came out of the plane and hugged Ethan when he was near the door of the plane.
She covered her mouth to muffle her sobs. The chauffeur looked at Moriah empathically while shaking his head.
