Chapter Thirty One
Chapter Thirty One
Margaret Mathias.
I stood up, tears welling in my eyes. I felt the intense rage I had never felt before, my heart racing, and many thoughts running through my mind. I'm trying to calm my nerves, but the thought of what he did to Denise made it impossible to do so. I didn't know when I lunged at him, but Denise held my leg with his right hand, shaking his head, "Please just run; I don't want anything to happen to you." I smiled at him. I ignored his words and turned to Alexander. "You dated across the line; you dared me." I was clearly infuriated before lunging at him. He seemed unperturbed when I reached out to him before landing a punch on his face and kicking his balls. He then reached out to his gun once again, and I instinctively bit the hand that was about to pull out the gun into his pocket, making him let out a scream.
"You ungrateful bitch," he cursed with so much rage in his voice, but he couldn't do much. I tried as much as possible not to act irrationally, but I couldn't help it. I felt my body was weak, my heart racing, and many uncalled thoughts seeping through my mind as pain scorched through my being. My eyes were heavy before I fell to the ground. Blood oozed out of me. I was baffled as I gently touched the opened gash.
I turned to look at the person who did it; my mouth hung open when I saw my mother holding a gun in her hand, with tears slipping down her cheeks. I opened my mouth to say something, anything, but nothing came out. "Mother..." I called out gently before I completely blacked out.
............
"Margaret, I'm sorry.... I'm sorry..." A croaked voice echoed. I gently opened my eyes as I found my mother sitting on the chair beside me, watching me with so much pain in her eyes. Recalling what my mother did, I removed her hand from my body. "Don't you dare touch me."
"But I'm your mother."
"Mothers don't pull the triggers on the daughters; for that, I suggest that you leave."
I was trying to calm my nerves while I said those words coldly. She looked surprised, but she didn't fight much with me before she turned and left. When she was gone, I quietly lay on the bed, many thoughts running through my mind, and it infuriated me as I sat there on the bed, unable to do anything or say anything.
I wanted to make things right so badly by seeing Denise again, and knowing that he's fine would put my mind at ease. So I climbed out of bed and looked down at the gash that had been oozing out blood before I had completely blacked out, only to realize that it had completely healed, like it was never there in the first place.
Tears slowly slipped down my cheeks as I waited and hoped that someone would come through, but no one arrived. So, I walked towards the door, my heart trembling, tears glistening, and my body trembling as I reached out for the doorknob before twisting it. However, it wouldn't budge. It was obvious I was locked from the inside. I let out a scream, calling out my mother, Alexander. My voice sounded desperate, but no one responded, which alarmed me even more. I tried to calm my nerves by doing the right thing, but my wolf was already planning to take charge because I could feel it within me, like someone wasn't right with him. I desperately want to see him, feel him, and hold him once again, which was something I didn't expect from myself because I never saw him in that manner when I first laid my eyes on him at my husband's house.
The thought of something happening to Denise was already making me feel more uncomfortable; I could feel my claws growing, my fangs elongating, and fur was now evident on my skin. I roughly continued banging on the door, but it was too strong for my strength.
Suddenly the door pried open, and I felt relieved because I could perceive the scent of my mother. I went closer to see who it was; my mouth hung open when I saw Jennifer Hunks. "What the fuck are you doing here?" I bellowed. She didn't talk much but rather just quietly grabbed my hand and dragged me to another room. When I wanted to protest, she turned to look at me. She had a stern look on her face. "You know how dangerous Alexander is. If you are caught, be ready that this will be your end." I took a deep breath. I felt a bit more relaxed. As she continued walking towards the long corridor, she slid a door open. The strong, unwavering scent of Denise lingered in the room. I couldn't hide my happiness anymore as I briskly entered the room, rushed to where Denise was, and stayed beside him on the bed. His eyes were closed, his body was pale, and he looked slightly disheveled. I gently wrapped my hand around his as I stared at him. "I'm sorry. I should have been there for you. It's my fault, and I take responsibility for all my actions. Please forgive me." I pleaded; my voice was hoarse, and my hand was still wrapped around him. As more tears slipped down my cheeks, already breaking me and making me feel the pain I had never felt before, when I was completely losing hope, I felt his gentle tap against my back. I immediately opened as I stared at him with so many emotions in my eyes. "This place is dangerous; I want to leave."
"But not without you," I retorted back, slightly aggressively, because I can't lose him again, not after what he did to save me.
I noticed Jennifer was still standing by the door, but this time, she looked rather more terrified as she gently peeked through the door.
"You guys need to leave; someone is coming."
"But what about you? That doesn't matter for now; you need to leave." She encouraged us, and without thinking twice, we jumped through the window with Denise, but a heavy guilt weighed heavily on me, knowing that Jennifer stood behind to protect us. I stood still while recalling her bravery, then Denise wrapped his hand around mine as he dragged me out of sight. He was still limping while letting out gruntal sounds, which clearly means that he wasn't fully healed yet.
I swallowed a deep lump down my throat. My body stiffened while we were running through the forest when I heard a loud gunshot followed by a heart-wrenching scream. I turned only to see Jennifer falling from the rooftop window, then Alexander showed his face through the window and averted his gaze towards us, his eyes red with rage as he let out a command. I couldn't hear what he said, but I believe he was telling his men to come after us.
Without hesitation, we started running. When Denise urged us to, I could still think of Jennifer, and it was killing my soul slowly. Not until we reached a tall tree did we stop, our hearts pounding due to exhaustion.
"We need to stop; I can't continue anymore." I cried, breathing so fast. I was thinking Denise was going to protest, but rather, he nodded his head and told me that we should hide behind the tree so we can rest for the meantime before we continue the journey. I smile, hugging him, because he truly understands me.
When we nestled behind the tree, we held on to each other, as our lives depended on each other's lives. I cuddled close in his chest; the rhythm of his heartbeat magically calmed my nerves in ways I can't explain.
He gently wrapped his hand around me and encouraged me that everything would be fine. My eyelids became heavy, and my vision blurred as I fell asleep in his arms, accepting the peace that comes from being beside him.
Hours went by so fast; I woke up, my eyes searching frantically, my heart racing, realizing that we might have slept so long. Fortunately, Denise was still close to me, but his body felt weirdly cold. I don't know when I started tapping him so fast and desperately while calling out his name, hoping he could hear me, but not a word was uttered.
"Please talk to me, please..." I begged, but there was not a single answer from him, which heightened my cortisol levels. I was already frustrated while trying to find out about this situation, but I don't know how to do it. Before I knew what was happening, I saw two dots on his right foot, and a deadly snake was killed beside him. I didn't know when I let out a loud scream, shouting at the top of my voice, only to hear footsteps behind me. I turned to see someone approaching, and that was when I saw Alexander standing while holding a pistol in his hand. His men were standing behind him, looking at me worriedly. I don't know if he's Alexander or not; all I wanted was to get someone who would be able to save Denise.
"I'm pleading with you, don't let him die, save him please." My voice cracked, my heart racing as every tear streamed down my cheeks, making me feel the ache that I never knew existed.
Alexander commanded his men, and without a word, they carried him back to the house, in which I followed him silently. Alexander was silent throughout the process before he said the words that made me stop walking to look at him, "I know you want to save your mate so desperately, but I'm sorry to disclose it to you; there's no way he can be saved, because he was bitten by a snake that doesn't yet have an antivenom."
I grabbed his shoulders, looking at him desperately. "No, you can't tell me that. There's definitely a way he can be saved; you just don't want to tell me. Please save him; I'm begging you."
"I'm sorry, there's nothing we can do. I wish you had stayed back; none of these would have happened."
"Noooo...." I let out a painful scream, only for the voice to say behind me, "There's only one way in which you can save him, but it'll almost be impossible, which is to bring the blood of the most dangerous witch, the blood of Bright."
