Chapter 24 CHAPTER 24
Chapter 24 CHAPTER 24
ANDREA
THE PREVIOUS DAY
It felt as though it was my heart Michelle stepped on when she pressed her heel against Emilia's palm.
"I didn't know her hand was there," she lied blatantly.
Emilia laid there on the floor, crying, and I couldn't even do anything. "Be more careful next time," I said, watching as one of the kitchen girls helped her out.
Michelle was becoming unreasonably cruel these days. I texted Lucas to call my phone after a minute passed. And he did.
"Sorry, I will have to pick this," I said, dropping the newspaper I was pretending to read.
"I thought we promised no calls during meals."
"Amore... it's important," I said. "I will have to pick this."
She nodded reluctantly, and I rushed out of the dining hall into my main room. I hit the wall a few times to steady myself before pulling out my phone.
"Hi, Andrea... wassup?"
"Is that how a medical professional like yourself greets his clients?"
Kelvin chuckled softly. "No. But that's how I greet my childhood friend and cousin."
I sighed, holding the side of my head. "I'll need you to come over now."
"Uhm..." he said, flipping through something. "I can't, buddy. I have a patient to attend to in ten minutes, and I won't be free until an hour and thirty minutes later."
I sighed lowly. "Is the patient dying?"
Kelvin chuckled again. "No. Why do you always paint the worst-case scenarios?"
"That's good then," I snapped. "I want you here in ten. A minute late and I will set your hospital ablaze."
He went mute.
"Come along with a kit to treat a wound caused by glass," I said, and ended the call.
I could hear Emilia's screams coming from the kitchen. She must be suffering a lot. I checked my phone, and only five minutes had gone by.
"Arghhhh," I pulled at my hair. After a while, I received a call from the gate. That meant Kelvin was here.
"Let him in," I said without waiting to hear from the gatekeeper.
Just then, a knock came on my door. It was Mama Rosa. Great. Perfect timing.
"How is she?" I asked, walking closer to her. "Has the bleeding stopped?"
She looked at me, shocked, before muttering yes. "But... that won't do. She needs to be examined by a professional."
"Dr. Kelvin is outside," I muttered. "He so happened to visit today," I lied.
"Lead him to Emilia."
I could tell Rosa didn't believe part of my words, but she nodded and walked out of the room.
Just a few minutes passed, and I couldn't help but feel uneasy, so I grabbed my phone. "If I hear a scream from her, of joy or pain... consider yourself dead," I sent to Kelvin.
"What's with all the threats?" Kelvin frowned as he neared me at the balcony where I was taking a drink.
"How is she?" I asked, ignoring his question.
He shook his head as he took a seat, pouring himself a generous amount of the wine I was sipping. He closed his eyes as he gulped down the slightly bitter content.
"I thought doctors don't drink?" I chuckled lightly.
He smiled as he dropped the glass. "Who is she to you?"
"My wife," I said plainly.
"Wife?" he repeated, stress lines forming on his face. "Then what about Michelle?"
"My fiancée."
He shook his head as he poured himself more of the alcohol wine.
"How did she get such a wound in the first place?"
I leaned closer, my heart skipping a beat. "Was it that deep? Do I need to admit her to the hospital? Will she be able to use her hand again?"
"Jeezzzz," Kelvin sighed. "One at a time, bro... she's fine."
I exhaled the breath I didn't realize I had been holding.
"She just needs adequate rest."
I nodded at his words, and he smiled.
"What's funny?" I asked, finding his reaction strange.
"Maybe you should come in for a checkup yourself," he added.
"Why?" My brows knitted. "Do I look sick to you?"
He shook his head dismissively. "Not that... its just that I have never seen my friend so worked up before," he was laughing now. "I mean... you even threatened to blow up my hospital... and while I was here, you sent another message saying you would kill me if she let out too many yelps of pain."
I ran a hand through my hair, staring anywhere but his face. "That meant nothing."
He nodded again. "Keep saying that until you believe it. I'll have to return to the hospital now before my patient actually dies. It was nice having an interruption from you," he smiled, punching me lightly on the shoulder.
"Get lost," I shook my head. He continued to laugh as he walked away.
I couldn't believe I had threatened Kelvin just because of Emilia. And that wasn't the part that scared me. I feared I might have kept my word if he had broken any of my orders.
Michelle had left to get her nails retouched, and I ordered Lucas to take her. It was just Rosa who was present when I got to the kitchen—she and Emilia. I made sure of that.
"Do you need something, sir?" Rosa asked, dropping the bowl she was holding.
"Where's Emilia?" I asked in a low tone.
"Over there," she pointed. "She's sleeping."
A slight frown settled on my face. "Why would you let her sleep this way? Her entire body must be aching."
I picked Emilia up before Rosa could say a word, walking towards her room. I laid her softly on the bed, taking her shoes off.
I sighed as I watched how she coiled herself up immediately. It seemed she had just three dresses. I will order Rosa to get her more.
She sighed from time to time, shifting on the bed. She was also running temperature.
I walked towards the restroom, grabbing a towel I saw there. Cold water wouldn't work. So I went back into the kitchen.
"I... I can take care of that," Rosa said as she boiled the water I requested.
"No. I will," I said, not wanting to argue. "I will need a bottle of water also."
This was just payback for the night she took care of me. There was nothing more to this. Now we were even, I told myself as I walked back.
