Chapter 875 Before the Christmas

Chapter 875 Before the Christmas

Rita wasn't into dating, and she definitely didn't think Evan would be into her.

This time, she just stayed quiet.

After dinner, Evan, like always, drove Rita back to school.

Before she got out, Evan said, "Winter break's coming up, and the dorms might close. You sure you don't wanna crash at my place?"

Rita smiled, "Thanks, but I talked to the resident advisor and put in an application. I can stay in the dorm over the break."

Evan paused, then said, "Alright, if you need anything, hit me up. I'll send you my number on Facebook. Save it."

Rita nodded, "Okay."

Evan didn't say anything else and drove off.

Rita headed back to her dorm.

Zoey and Grace were busy packing, with some local Girona goodies they bought for their parents nearby.

Zoey asked, "Rita, you're really not going home for the holidays?"

Rita replied, "Nope, got some work to finish."

Grace chimed in, "Zoey, you silly girl, Rita's fiancé is in Girona. Why would she go home? She's definitely staying to spend time with him."

Rita didn't bother explaining and let them tease her.

The Grey family didn't want Rita to go home unless it was with Evan.

Rita had thought about asking Evan to go home with her to see Evelyn.

But Evan had already done so much for her, and with his mixed signals tonight, Rita felt hesitant and didn't want to bother him more.

Zoey asked, "So, what are you and Evan doing for winter break? Going abroad? If you are, let me know so you can buy me some stuff."

Grace added, "Yeah, me too. I need skincare products."

Rita said, "I'm probably not going anywhere. Still got music work to do."

Grace said, "You have such a rich fiancé, why work so hard?"

Rita replied, "His money is his."

To outsiders, someone like Evan seemed to have it easy.

But in reality, Evan was under a lot of pressure. He had to run his own gaming company and deal with a lot of scheming to secure his future control of the Smith Group.

If Evan wasn't capable enough and lost the battle for the Smith Group, his life might be worse than an average person's.

Rita had never felt family love growing up. She knew that only by making her own money could she have the power to say "no."

Rita also believed that no matter who a girl married, she should be able to earn her own money.

Just like many housewives who could earn money before marriage but ended up asking their husbands for every penny after marriage.

Gradually, they seemed to lose touch with society, and life got harder.

Rita never wanted to live a life where she had to ask others for money again.

In no time, winter break arrived. Most students happily went home, with only a few staying on campus.

Her roommates had all gone home, and Rita's daily routine became very simple.

She worked at Saul's studio during the day and read in the dorm at night.

Life was simple, but Rita found contentment in it.

As Christmas approached, Rita called Evelyn before leaving work.

Previously, Evelyn's phone had been confiscated by their parents, and Rita couldn't reach her.

Later, Rita bought a new phone and asked Evan to have someone personally deliver it to Evelyn, so they could stay in touch.

They agreed that the phone couldn't be taken home to avoid their parents finding out, so Rita could only call at specific times when Evelyn could answer.

On the phone, Evelyn was super happy, chatting away about her life.

Knowing Evelyn was doing well, Rita felt relieved.

Just as she was about to hang up, Rita heard Evelyn murmur, "Rita, are you really not coming home for Christmas? If you don't come, I'll be all alone."

Rita felt a pang in her heart and immediately decided. "I'll come see you the day before Christmas Eve."

The Grey family had an event the day before Christmas Eve, so everyone would be busy and wouldn't notice if Evelyn was there or not.

Rita figured if she went back quietly at that time, no one would know.

After the call, Rita immediately bought a plane ticket on her phone.

With that done, Rita finished the last bit of work she had.

Before leaving, Rita went to say goodbye to Saul. "Mr. Pena, I've finished my work. Is there anything else you need?"

Saul said, "Are you heading back to school? Let me give you a ride."

Rita didn't want to have too much interaction with Saul outside of work, so she politely declined, "Mr. Pena, you have a lot of work to do. I don't want to trouble you."

Saul glanced at his watch and said, "I'm heading home too. It's on the way."

Rita insisted, "Really, it's fine."

But Saul was very persistent, "I have some work-related things to discuss with you. With Christmas coming up, I don't want to take up your time, so let's talk on the way."

At this point, Rita couldn't insist anymore. She nodded in agreement.

Unexpectedly, as they went downstairs, they ran into Evan.

Evan's car was parked in the lot outside the elevator, and he was leaning against it, holding a cigarette. He was the first thing they saw when they exited the elevator.

Saul smiled, "So your fiancé came to pick you up, that's why you refused my offer."

Rita didn't explain, just smiled awkwardly.

Saul added, "I won't intrude on your date then."

Rita said, "Goodbye."

She turned and walked towards Evan.

As she reached him, she heard his gloomy voice, "What did Saul say to you?"

Rita replied, "He had some work-related things to discuss and offered to give me a ride back to school. When he saw you, he left."

Evan asked, "Do you really think he had work-related things to discuss?"

Rita said, "What else?"

Evan reached out and poked Rita's forehead, "You little fool!"

Rita pouted, "Don't poke me!"

Evan raised his hand, intending to poke her forehead again, "I'll poke you."

Rita quickly dodged and asked, "Did you come to pick me up?"

Evan said, "I'm going home to have dinner with my mom. She asked me to invite you. I was nearby, so I came to get you."

Rita said, "The subway is convenient here. I can take the subway."

Evan replied, "Then go take the subway. You're not riding in my car."

Rita said, "Since you're here, why wouldn't I ride with you?"

Evan raised his hand and poked her head again. "I call you silly, but you're not."

Rita said, "If you call me silly again, I'll get mad."

Evan laughed, "You've got a temper, huh?"

Rita said, "Even a cornered rat will fight back, let alone a human."
