Chapter 134 Chapter 134
Chapter 134 Chapter 134
Greer’s POV
I could feel it so deeply. The break-in at my apartment, the hit-and-run on the road, and now Cassey’s house deliberately set ablaze, it was all connected. Someone was coming after me with increasing aggression, and they didn’t care who got hurt in the process. My best friend had lost her home because she had taken me in. How many more people would suffer because of the danger following me?
Tears slipped down my cheeks silently. The pregnancy made everything feel even heavier. I placed a protective hand over my still-flat stomach, thinking about the tiny life growing inside me. Four weeks. Our baby. The joy of it was mixed with overwhelming fear. What kind of world was I bringing this child into? One where assassins were trying to kill their mother?
Calder found me like that. He sat beside me on the couch and pulled me gently into his arms. I buried my face in his chest, letting the tears fall freely.
“It was for me,” I whispered, voice breaking. “The fire… they were trying to get to me again. I know it. I can feel it so much. First my apartment, then the car, now Cassey’s home. Who wants me dead this badly?”
Calder held me tighter, one hand stroking my hair while the other rubbed soothing circles on my back. “I know, baby. I know. But we’re going to find them. I have my best people investigating every lead. The break-in, the hit-and-run, the fire, it’s all connected, and we will end this.”
His voice was steady and protective, but I could feel the tension in his body. He was angry, furious, even — but keeping it controlled for my sake. I clung to him, drawing strength from his warmth and the steady beat of his heart.
Cassey joined us a few minutes later, still wiping her eyes. She sat on my other side and hugged me tightly.
“We’re going to be okay,” she said softly, though her voice still trembled. “All of us. You, me, the new store… we’ll get through this.”
I nodded, trying to believe her words. But deep down, the fear remained strong. Someone wanted me gone. They had already destroyed two homes and nearly killed an innocent driver. How long before they succeeded?
Later that afternoon, after making sure Cassey was settled and comfortable in her new house, Calder drove me back toward the flagship store. The security detail followed closely behind us. I rested my head against the window, watching the city pass by, one hand subtly resting on my stomach.
A baby.
Our baby.
The thought brought a small, secret smile to my lips even through the fear. I was scared — terrified, actually — but a tiny spark of hope was growing alongside the child inside me. Maybe this little life was exactly what I needed to keep fighting harder.
When we reached the store, I threw myself into work. The furniture was all in place now. The soft lemon yellow and pink walls looked even more beautiful with the new displays and lighting. Cassey joined us shortly after, determined to keep moving forward despite losing her home.
As I directed the final arrangements for the consultation area, I felt a strange mix of emotions. Joy for life growing inside me. Fear for the danger surrounding us. Gratitude for Calder and Cassey. Determination to keep building despite everything.
I arrived back at Cassey's new house.
After making sure Cassey was settled in her new house, I pulled her aside into the quiet living room while Calder stepped outside to take a call. The secret had been burning inside me since the hospital. I couldn’t carry it alone anymore.
“Cassey… I’m pregnant,” I whispered, my voice trembling slightly. “Four weeks. Calder and I… we’re having a baby.”
Cassey froze. Her eyes widened, and for a long moment she just stared at me. The expression on her face was complicated — a mix of surprise, genuine happiness, and deep unease. She knew exactly who the father was. Calder. My stepfather. The man who had once been married to my mother. The complications of our relationship hung heavily between us.
“I… I don’t know how to feel about this,” she admitted honestly, her voice low and careful. “Greer, you know who’s responsible for this situation. The family mess, the danger, everything that’s happened because of it… it’s so complicated.”
I nodded, tears filling my eyes. I completely understood her conflicted feelings. “I know. I know how it looks from the outside. The affair, the betrayal, the scandals, it’s all so messy. But I had no choice, Cassey. I love him. Deeply. And this baby… it’s ours. I’m scared, but I’m also happy. This little life inside me feels like a light in the middle of all this darkness.”
Cassey was quiet for a moment, processing. Then she pulled me into a tight hug, her arms wrapping around me protectively. “I’m happy for you. Really. You deserve love and joy after everything you’ve been through. But I’m also worried. With people trying to kill you, the fire at my old house, all the threats… bringing a baby into this feels dangerous. But you’re going to be an amazing mother. I’ll be here for you, no matter what. I promise.”
Her support meant the world to me. We sat together on the couch for a long time, talking softly. She asked gentle questions about how I was feeling, how Calder had reacted, and what we planned to do. I told her we were keeping the pregnancy a secret for now, just between the three of us, until the danger passed.
Even with her conflicted feelings, Cassey’s love and loyalty never wavered. She squeezed my hand and smiled softly. “A baby. Wow. This changes everything… in a good way. We’ll protect you both.”
Later, when Calder returned, he joined us. The three of us sat together in the living room, the weight of the pregnancy secret binding us closer. Despite the fear that still lingered from the recent attacks, a small spark of hope had been lit inside me.
I was going to be a mother.
And no matter how scared I was, I would fight harder than ever to protect my child.
