Chapter 133 Chapter 133
Greer’s POV
Pregnant.
My hand instinctively moved to my stomach. I was carrying a baby. Calder’s baby. Our baby.
Calder’s face lit up with pure, unfiltered joy. He pulled me into a tight, protective hug, his arms wrapping around me as if he never wanted to let go.
“We’re having a baby,” he whispered, voice thick with emotion. “I’m going to be a father...again. I love you so much.”
Tears filled my eyes. I didn’t know whether to laugh with happiness or cry from fear. A baby. A little life growing inside me. But the timing felt terrifying. Someone was actively trying to kill me. How could I bring a child into this world of danger and uncertainty?
I started crying softly in his arms. “What if they come after me again? What if they kill me and our baby?”
Calder pulled back slightly, cupping my face with both hands. His eyes were intense, full of love and determination. “I won’t let that happen. I will protect both of you with everything I have. You’re not alone in this. We’re in this together.”
We decided to keep the pregnancy a secret for now, just between us. The danger surrounding me was too great to risk anyone else knowing. I needed time to process it myself. A baby. Our baby. The thought both warmed and terrified me.
Later that evening, as we were preparing to leave the hospital, my phone rang. It was Cassey. Her voice was trembling and panicked when I answered.
“Greer… my house… someone set it on fire! It’s burning!”
The words hit me like a physical blow. I gasped, nearly dropping the phone. “What? Cassey, are you okay? Did you get out?”
“I got out in time, but everything… it’s gone. I think they were after you. They knew you were staying here.”
Tears flooded my eyes immediately. I started crying hard, my whole body shaking with fear and guilt. “This is my fault. They’re coming after me, and now your home is destroyed because of it. I’m so sorry…”
Calder gently took the phone from my hand and spoke to Cassey while pulling me into his arms. “Stay calm. We’re coming right now. Stay safe where you are.”
He drove us to Cassey’s apartment as fast as safely possible. When we arrived, the scene was chaotic and heartbreaking. Flames were still licking at parts of the building, though firefighters had the blaze mostly under control. Police cars and ambulances filled the street. Neighbors stood outside in clusters, watching in shock. Media vans had already arrived, cameras flashing.
Cassey stood on the sidewalk in her pajamas, wrapped in a blanket one of the neighbors had given her. Her face was streaked with soot and tears. The moment she saw me, she ran over and hugged me tightly.
“I’m okay,” she whispered, voice shaking. “I got out before it got bad. But the house… everything inside…”
I cried harder, holding her close. “I’m so sorry. This is because of me. They’re trying to get to me and they’re hurting everyone around me.”
Calder stood protectively beside us, one arm around my waist while his other hand rested comfortingly on Cassey’s shoulder. Firefighters moved around the scene, police officers took statements, and onlookers whispered among themselves. The entire street was lit up with emergency lights and the glow of the dying fire.
I felt completely overwhelmed. First the break-in at my own apartment, then the hit-and-run, now Cassey’s home deliberately set ablaze. Someone was systematically trying to destroy everything and everyone connected to me. The pregnancy news made everything feel ten times heavier. I was carrying a child now. I had to protect not just myself anymore.
Calder kissed the top of my head. “We’ll find who did this. I promise. For now, both of you are coming with me. No more staying apart.”
Cassey nodded, still trembling. I held her hand tightly as we watched the firefighters finish putting out the last of the flames. My heart ached for her. She had opened her home to me without hesitation, and now it was gone because of the danger following me.
As the chaos continued around us; sirens, flashing lights, concerned neighbors offering help, I leaned against Calder, one hand subtly resting on my stomach where our baby was growing.
I was scared. Terrified, actually.
But I had a baby growing inside me. A little life that deserved a chance at this world.
I would keep fighting.
For myself. For Cassey. For Calder.
And now… for our child.
Calder didn’t waste any time. True to his word, he handled everything with the efficiency and power only he possessed. Within a few hours of the fire, he had secured a beautiful new two-storey house for Cassey, fully in her name. It was in a secure, upscale neighborhood with excellent security features, gated entrance, surveillance cameras, and private security on call. The house was elegant yet warm, with spacious rooms, a lovely garden, and everything Cassey could possibly need to start over.
When we arrived at the new property the next morning, Cassey stood frozen in the driveway, staring at the beautiful home with wide, tear-filled eyes. The morning sun made the white exterior glow softly. She turned to Calder slowly, her lips trembling.
“You… you did this for me?” she whispered.
Calder nodded, his voice gentle. “You’ve been a true friend to Greer when she needed it most. This is the least I can do. The house is yours. Fully paid for. No rent. No mortgage. It’s in your name.”
Cassey let out a shaky sob and threw her arms around him in a grateful hug. She held him tightly for a long moment, whispering repeated thank yous. Calder hugged her back, patting her shoulder comfortingly. I watched them with a heavy but warm heart, tears pricking my own eyes. Calder’s generosity in the middle of all this chaos reminded me why I loved him so deeply.
Inside, the house was just as beautiful as the exterior. Modern furniture had already been arranged, fresh flowers sat on the dining table, and the kitchen was stocked with essentials. Cassey walked through every room in awe, touching surfaces as if she couldn’t believe it was real.
“I don’t know how to thank you enough,” she said again, voice thick with emotion. “After losing everything in the fire… this means the world to me.”
We helped her settle in for a while. I stayed close to her, still carrying the heavy weight of guilt in my chest. As Cassey explored her new bedroom, I sat on the edge of the couch in the living room, staring at the floor. The truth kept echoing in my mind.
The fire had been meant for me.
