Last Day

Silence fell over the ranger station.  The radio crackled with empty static after Kane's shocking statement.

"A clone?" Marcus whispered, breaking the quiet.  "Is that even possible?"

Tarek's face hardened.  "The Void can create copies, but they are never perfect. They lack the soul of the original."

Eli looked at Kael, studying his silver face and violet eyes.  This was the being he had come to trust, to care for deeply.  But now doubt crept in like a shadow.

"I know what you're thinking," Kael said softly.  "How can you be sure I'm the real Kael?"

Eli swallowed hard.  "Tell me something only the real Kael would know."

Kael stepped closer.  "When we first met in the facility, you called me by name even though Dr. Kane only referred to me as 'Subject X27.' You said you named me after a star you read about in an old book. That small kindness was the first light in my darkness."

The memory clicked into place, and Eli's doubt disappeared.  He nodded, convinced.

"So what do we do now?" Dr. Evans asked.  "We can't just walk into Kane's trap."

"But we can't leave whoever's at the clearing either," Eli argued.  "If there really is another Kael, he might need our help."

Tarek checked the guns from his ship.  "I can create a diversion while—"

A flash of blue light cut him off.  Everyone jumped back as a hologram appeared in the middle of the room—a tall figure in flowing robes.

"Captain Tarek," the hologram said in a musical language.

Tarek immediately knelt.  "Queen Lyra!"

Kael gasped and followed suit.  "Mother?"

The holographic queen spoke quickly in the Lumari language.  Tarek reacted with urgency, gesturing to Eli and the others.  When the conversation finished, the hologram flickered out.

"What was that about?" Marcus asked.

"The Lumari fleet has arrived in Earth's orbit," Tarek explained, his voice tight.  "They are cloaked from Earth's detection systems, but they cannot land while the Void presence is growing."

"My mother says the Void is spreading faster than they anticipated," Kael added.  "If we don't recover the Starlight Sword by tomorrow night, Earth will become another lost world."

"Then we need a new plan," Eli decided.  "We can't just run anymore."

As dawn broke fully, Eli explained his daring idea.  Instead of hiding, they would walk right into the heart of trouble.  By midmorning, they were ready to move.

"This is crazy," Marcus muttered as they neared the research facility.  "We're going back to the place we just escaped from?"

"Kane would never expect it," Eli said firmly.  "And it's the last place she'll look for us while she's busy setting her trap at the clearing."

Using Kael's mind trick, they managed to put three guards to sleep and slip into the building through a service entrance.  The hallways were eerily empty.

"Where is everyone?" Dr. Evans whispered.

"Probably at the mountain searching for us," Lily offered.

They made their way to Eli's lab, which appeared unchanged since their escape.  Eli quickly grabbed supplies while Marcus hacked into the facility's computer system.

"I'm in," Marcus stated.  "According to the schedule, Kane is planning to move 'Subject X27' to the Void Chamber tomorrow afternoon."

"That gives us time," Eli said, pulling out a bag he had hidden under a loose floor tile.  Inside were normal clothes—jeans, a blue T-shirt, and a gray sweater.

"These are for you," he told Kael.  "I've been saving them. No more prison jumpsuit."

Kael touched the soft cloth with wonder.  "Thank you."

As Kael changed clothes, Eli explained the next step of his plan.

"I'll stay here with Kael," he said.  "We'll pretend I've captured him and am running tests. Kane will hear about it when her people check in, and it will confuse her."

"That's too dangerous," Tarek argued.

"It's our best chance," Eli urged.  "The rest of you should go to Skyline Ridge and prepare for tomorrow night. We'll meet you there."

After much argument, they agreed.  Dr. Evans, Lily, and Tarek would head to Skyline Ridge, while Marcus would stay close in case Eli and Kael needed help.

As the others left, Eli locked the lab doors and set up equipment to make it look like he was performing experiments.  He put sensors on Kael's temples and started the monitoring machines.

"Now we wait," Eli said, pulling up a chair next to Kael.

For the next few hours, they sat together, keeping up the look of tests whenever anyone passed by the lab windows.  But when they were alone, they simply talked.

"Tell me about your home," Eli said.

Kael's eyes brightened.  "Lumaria is beautiful. Our cities float among the clouds, and at night, the twin moons turn everything silver." He paused, smiling at a memory.  "There's a garden in the royal palace where flowers sing when the wind blows through them."

"It sounds amazing," Eli said sadly.

"I'll take you there someday," Kael promised.

They shared stories throughout the day.  Eli told Kael about growing up not knowing he was from another world, about his dreams of the stars that now made sense.  Kael shared tales of Lumarian festivals and the stories of the Starlight Sword.

"My father said only I can wield it," Eli said.  "But I don't know how."

"The sword recognizes the royal bloodline," Kael explained.  "When you touch it, it will awaken your full powers."

As evening approached, Eli's computer beeped with an alert.

"Kane's back," he whispered, checking the security cams.  "And she's not alone."

On the screen, they watched Kane stride through the main door.  Behind her walked a perfect copy of Kael, dressed in the same gray outfit Kael had worn during his captivity.  The copy's moves were stiff, his eyes empty.

"That's not a clone," Kael whispered in fear.  "That's a Void vessel—a shell made to look like me, but filled with darkness."

Kane stopped suddenly, as if feeling something.  She turned toward the camera, her black eyes seeming to stare straight at them.  A cold smile spread across her deformed face.

"She knows we're here," Eli said, backing away from the computer.  "We need to leave. Now."

They grabbed their packed bags and headed for the safety exit.  But when Eli tried to open the door, it wouldn't move.

"She's locked down the facility," Eli realized.  "We're trapped."

Kael closed his eyes, focusing.  "There's another way. Through the ventilation system, like you used before."

They crawled into the tight duct, moving as quietly as possible.  Below them, they could hear Kane telling guards to search every room.

"The prince is here," Kane's strangely deep voice echoed.  "Find him and the alien. Bring them to me alive."

They reached a split in the ventilation system.  Kael pointed left.  "This way leads to the roof."

As they turned the corner, the metal beneath them suddenly gave way.  Eli and Kael tumbled through the broken vent, falling hard on the floor of a darkened lab.

Before they could recover, the lights came on.  Kane stood in the doorway, the false Kael beside her.

"Welcome back, Prince Elian," Kane said, her voice sending chills down Eli's spine.  "I've been waiting for you."

Guards surrounded them, their eyes shining with the same darkness as Kane's.

"The real Kael," Kane said, looking between the two silver beings.  "And my perfect copy. At last, side by side."

Eli stepped protectively in front of Kael.  "What do you want from us?"

"From you, Prince? Your blood," Kane answered coldly.  "From him?" She nodded toward Kael.  "Everything else."

"You'll never get the Starlight Sword," Eli stated defiantly.

Kane's laughter was like breaking glass.  "I don't need to find it. You're going to bring it right to me."

She snapped her fingers, and the fake Kael stepped forward.  Its skin began to ripple and change, the silver color changing to a deep void-like black.

"When the time comes," Kane said, "you'll have to choose which Kael lives and which one dies. The sword or your friend. The choice will break you, Prince."

Suddenly, all the lights in the building flickered and went out.  Emergency red lights put the room in an eerie glow.

A voice came over the intercom—Marcus.  "Eli! Run! I've overridden the security locks!"

In the chaos, Kael grabbed Eli's hand.  "This way!"

They burst through the doors and ran down the hallway as alarms blared.  Behind them, Kane's roar of rage shook the walls.

They turned a corner and found themselves face-to-face with the false Kael, its body now fully transformed—a horrifying shadow version of the original.

"You cannot escape the Void," it hissed in a voice that sounded like Kael's but twisted and wrong.

The real Kael stepped forward, his hands sparkling with purple light.  "Watch me."

A blast of energy shot from Kael's hands, sending the copy flying backward.  But the effort left Kael weaker, stumbling against Eli.

"I can't keep this up," Kael gasped.  "My power is fading."

They reached the roof access door and pushed through it.  The night air hit them like freedom.

Marcus was waiting with a stolen security car.  "Get in!"

As they sped away from the building, Eli looked back.  Kane stood on the roof, her changed body silhouetted against the moon.  Beside her, the shadow Kael watched them with empty eyes.

"We need to reach Skyline Ridge before tomorrow night," Eli said, holding Kael's hand.

Kael nodded weakly.  "The sword is our only hope now."

As they drove through the darkness, Kael suddenly tensed.  His eyes rolled back, and his body began to shake.

"What's happening?" Eli cried, holding Kael's convulsing form.

"The connection," Kael gasped between spasms.  "The Void copy—it's trying to take control—of both of us—"

Kael's eyes snapped open, now flickering between their normal violet and a terrible blackness.

"Eli," he whispered, his voice fighting to stay his own, "if I turn—if I become like them—promise me you'll—"

His words cut off as his body went limp in Eli's arms.
