Countdown Begins
"Get back!" Tarek whispered, pulling everyone deeper into the cave. "They must not find us."
Eli's heart hammered in his chest as they withdrew. The sound of Kane's mind-controlled workers searching outside got louder. Footsteps crunched on leaves and twigs. Flashlight beams swept across the cave opening.
"There are too many of them," Marcus whispered. "Even with Kael's mind trick, he can only put three or four to sleep at once."
Dr. Evans hugged Lily close. "What about the ship? Can we escape in it?"
Tarek shook his head. "They're surrounding it already. We're trapped."
Kael's silver skin had gotten paler, almost translucent. "I might be able to create a distraction," he offered weakly.
"No," Eli said firmly. "You're still recovering from Kane's experiments. You need to save your strength."
A voice boomed from outside, echoing through the cave. It was Kane's voice, but different now – deeper and hollow, as if something else spoke through her.
"Prince Elian of Lumari," the voice called. "I know you're hiding. Come out now, and I'll spare your friends. Resist, and they will become part of the Void, just like the others."
Eli moved toward the cave opening, but Marcus grabbed his arm.
"Don't even think about it," Marcus warned. "She's lying."
"I have an idea," Lily whispered suddenly. Everyone turned to look at the young girl. "There's another way out of these caves. Mom and I used to hike here when I was little. There's a tunnel that leads to the other side of the mountain."
Hope flickered in Eli's eyes. "Can you guide us?"
Lily nodded firmly. "Follow me."
They crept deeper into the cave system, led by the light from Tarek's alien device. The sounds of Kane and her followers faded behind them as they navigated through narrow passages and around huge stone columns.
After what felt like hours of walking, they emerged from a small opening halfway up the mountain, hiding behind thick bushes. The night sky spread above them, filled with stars.
"We made it," Dr. Evans sighed with relief.
"Not quite," Tarek said sadly, pointing down the mountain.
In the valley below, they could see the lights of a small town. But between them and safety was a line of flashlights – Kane's mind-controlled workers making a perimeter around the mountain.
"She's smarter than I thought," Marcus mumbled. "She's got the whole mountain surrounded."
They fled back into the tunnel opening to avoid being spotted.
"We need a plan," Eli said, trying to sound stronger than he felt. "We can't stay in these caves forever."
Kael, who had been quiet, suddenly straightened up. "I'm picking up something," he said, his eyes sparkling brighter. "Some kind of broadcast."
"What do you mean?" Eli asked.
"Kane is sending a message to the facility," Kael explained, his face tense with focus. "I can hear it in my mind."
"What's she saying?" Marcus asked.
Kael closed his eyes. "She's announcing that I will be moved in three days to a new location. Something called... 'The Void Chamber.'"
Dr. Evans gasped. "The Void Chamber is the main testing area. It's where they perform the most dangerous experiments."
"And the cutting," Marcus added grimly. "If they're moving Kael there, it means they're going to start dissecting him soon."
Eli's blood ran cold. He looked at Kael's troubled face and made a choice.
"We need to move up our escape plan," he stated. "We can't wait any longer. We'll make our move tomorrow night."
"But how?" Lily asked. "They're everywhere!"
Eli paced back and forth, thinking hard. "We need to split up. Make Kane think we're in different places at once."
"That might work," Tarek agreed. "We can use the ship's communication system to send false signals."
As they discussed their plan, Kael suddenly tensed. His violet eyes widened with fear.
"She knows we're here," he whispered.
A moment later, they heard it – the sound of footsteps approaching from inside the cave. Kane had found the other opening to the cave system.
"Run!" Tarek shouted.
They burst out of the hiding place and scrambled down the rocky hillside. Stones and dirt slid beneath their feet as they ran. Behind them, dark figures emerged from the cave hole.
"Split up!" Eli called out. "Meet at the fallen oak tree we passed on the way up!"
Eli and Kael went right, running along a narrow ledge. Marcus and Dr. Evans went left with Lily. Tarek moved straight down the steepest part of the mountain, taking most of the attention.
Eli pulled Kael behind a big boulder as two of Kane's mind-controlled workers ran past. They were breathing hard, trying not to make a sound.
"I have another secret to tell you," Kael whispered when the danger had passed. "Something I remembered when Kane was searching for us."
"What is it?" Eli asked.
"The Starlight Sword," Kael said. "I know where it is. 'Where the sky meets the mountain' – it's talking about Skyline Ridge. There's a cave there that only opens when the twin moons of my world align with Earth's moon."
Eli's eyes widened. "When will that happen?"
"Tomorrow night," Kael admitted. "That's why we must escape before then. The sword is our only hope against the Void."
They continued down the mountain, moving from shade to shadow. When they reached the fallen oak tree, the others were already waiting.
"Is everyone okay?" Eli asked, counting heads.
"We lost them for now," Marcus reported. "But they're still searching."
Tarek looked at his son with pride. "Kael, your powers are growing stronger. Can you sense how many followers Kane has nearby?"
Kael closed his eyes, focusing. "At least twenty around the mountain. But there's something else..." His face paled. "She's calling for reinforcements. A helicopter is coming from the main facility. It will be here by dawn."
Dr. Evans checked her watch. "That gives us about five hours to find shelter and prepare."
"I know somewhere we can go," Lily offered. "There's an old ranger station about two miles from here. It's abandoned, but it should have supplies."
They moved through the dark forest, jumping at every sound. Twice they had to hide as search parties passed close. By the time they reached the ranger station, the eastern sky was beginning to lighten.
The station was a small wooden cabin, dusty but sound. Inside, they found canned food, matches, and a radio.
"We should try to contact help," Marcus suggested, reaching for the radio.
"No," Tarek warned. "Kane might be monitoring the frequencies. We can't risk it."
They settled in for a few hours of rest, taking turns to keep watch at the windows. Eli couldn't sleep. He sat with Kael, planning their next move.
"Tomorrow night, we'll need to reach Skyline Ridge," Eli whispered. "But first, we need to lose Kane and her followers."
"I've been practicing my mind trick," Kael told him. "I think I can push myself to affect more people at once."
"Don't risk hurting yourself," Eli said, worried.
Kael smiled. "Your father would be proud of you, Prince Elian. You put others before yourself, just as he did."
Their talk was interrupted by the distant sound of helicopter blades. Everyone tensed.
"They're earlier than we expected," Tarek said sadly.
Marcus peered through the dusty window. "It's landing in the clearing half a mile away."
"We need to move," Dr. Evans urged. "They'll find us soon."
As they collected their meager supplies, the radio suddenly crackled to life. Everyone froze as Kane's warped voice filled the small cabin.
"Attention, Prince Elian and friends," Kane's voice rasped through the speaker. "I have a special guest who would like to speak with you."
There was a pause, and then another voice came through – weak and pained, but distinct.
"Eli... don't come back... it's a trap..."
Eli's blood turned to ice. He knew that sound.
"Kael," he whispered, looking in confusion at Kael standing beside him.
The real Kael's eyes widened in fear. "That's not possible..."
Kane's laughter echoed from the radio. "Confused, Prince? You should be. Come to the clearing to see our special guest. You have one hour. After that, Kael Prime begins the cutting process."
The radio went dead. Everyone stared at Kael, whose silver skin had gone ashen.
"Kael Prime?" Marcus asked. "What does that mean?"
"It means," Tarek said gravely, "that Kane has created a clone of my son."
Eli felt the world spinning around him. "How do we know which one is real?"
Kael looked at Eli, his violet eyes filled with fear and purpose. "You'll have to decide that for yourself, Prince Elian. And you'll have to do it before the countdown ends."
