Chapter 30: Cradlefire
Chapter 30: Cradlefire
The first contraction hit just before dawn.
It rolled through Jessica’s body like a fault line cracking open beneath her skin—hot, sharp, and utterly commanding. She woke with a sharp inhale, her hand flying to the swell of her belly as her back arched against the silken bedding. The sanctuary trembled slightly, a ripple in the air as if the stone itself acknowledged the moment.
Antonin was at her side before she could call for him.
His eyes—storm-gray and wide with knowing—met hers, and he nodded once.
“It’s time.”
Jessica could barely breathe through the second wave. “Twins…” she panted. “Of course it would start before the moon’s even set.”
He offered a small, tight smile, already moving to help her shift against the headboard. “They’re eager. Just like their mother.”
Brielle entered next, guided by the subtle flare of magic pulsing through the warded hall. Her staff glowed faintly with tracking spells, the enchanted crystals singing softly. She crossed the chamber with calm, purposeful steps, even as the sacred cradle beside the bed lit with a soft blue flame.
“The veil between worlds is thinning,” Brielle murmured. “They are ready.”
Behind her, Miravelle appeared in a rustle of silver robes and ageless power, her long hair braided with threads of starlight.
“The flame has kindled,” she whispered. “The SongMother prepares to split her voice into two.”
Jessica grit her teeth as another contraction seized her—this one longer, deeper. She doubled over, hand gripping Antonin’s arm with claw-like desperation. He didn’t flinch.
“I’m here, love,” he whispered, wrapping both arms around her shoulders. “I’ve got you.”
The room was prepared.
Runes of breath and fire had been carved into the stone. Braziers burned sacred oils—myrrh, cinnamon, dragon’s blood. The cradle, blessed by Fae and Seer alike, shimmered like a forge awaiting its first true flames.
Jessica labored surrounded by light, warmth, and strength—but the pain was not diminished.
It was intensified by the magic in her veins and the divine weight of carrying twin heirs born of prophecy. Her breath came in staggered gasps, sweat beading across her brow as her body bowed to the primal rhythm of birthing.
“They’re close now,” Brielle said, placing warm hands over Jessica’s belly. “One leads, the other waits. The first will break through the veil. The second will follow on fire.”
Jessica groaned through clenched teeth. “Of course they’re difficult. They’re mine.”
Antonin pressed his forehead to hers, anchoring her. “They are also mine, and I’m here. All the way through.”
She turned her head, gritting against another contraction, and whispered, “Don’t let go.”
“Never,” he vowed, his voice rough with held-back emotion.
The next hour passed in waves of pain and light.
Jessica screamed only once—and even then, it was not in fear or weakness, but in power. Her inner flame rose to meet the agony, her voice echoing with divine resonance as the first child crowned.
Brielle caught her carefully, whispering prayers and channeling cooling magic around the baby’s head.
“Push again, Jessica. The flame is cresting.”
With a cry and final push, the room exploded in a rush of breath—
And then the first wail pierced the sanctuary.
A girl.
Slick with birth, her skin shimmered in the cradle-light—golden-pearl, streaked faintly with sapphire. A tiny pair of wing buds shimmered just beneath the skin of her shoulders.
Jessica sobbed openly, her arms outstretched.
But the moment was not done.
Miravelle stepped in quickly, taking the newborn to be cleansed and placed within the sacred cradle, while Jessica’s body seized again.
Brielle frowned, placing both hands back on her belly. “The second is stubborn. The fire is hotter. He comes not on breath—but on heat.”
Jessica gasped, arching again as the contraction tore through her like wildfire. Her back lifted clear from the bed. She screamed—not in fear, but in fierce challenge. She would bring this second child through.
Antonin knelt at her side now, forehead pressed to her temple. “Breathe. Sing if you can, Jess. You’re not alone.”
Jessica reached inside herself, down past pain and heat, into the song the Goddess had woven into her soul. And through her gritted teeth and labored breath, she began to hum.
Low. Trembling. Then stronger.
It wasn’t a melody for the world. It was for him. Her son.
A beacon. A call.
And he answered.
The second wave broke—and with a single, searing push, the boy was born. His cry wasn’t a wail.
It was a roar.
Antonin choked back a cry as the second child was lifted from between blood and magic. The boy’s skin glowed faintly red-gold, his eyes fluttering open—already alert, already aware. His tiny hand gripped Brielle’s thumb like a warrior taking up his blade.
Miravelle laughed softly, a sound like chimes in wind. “That one will lead armies.”
Jessica, dazed and trembling, smiled through tears. “Not… yet, he won’t.”
Both children were laid in the cradle together, side by side. The moment their skin touched, the flames rose higher—pure blue, golden at the edges, singing quietly in harmony. The cradle pulsed in response to their joined heartbeat.
But Jessica wasn’t finished.
As instructed by the Goddess in her dreams, she called upon the change—her own shift.
Antonin helped her rise, though she shook with exhaustion, and with his support, she took a single breath, then another. Her voice dropped into ancient tone, her lips moving silently.
The transformation came not in fire—but in light.
Her wings erupted first, then her limbs lengthened into scaled grace. Her form rose—pearlescent, luminous, touched with faint golden markings that shimmered like prophecy itself.
The pain of labor melted under the strength of her dragon’s renewal. Her wounds sealed. Her blood slowed. Her body, reborn.
She curled protectively around the cradle, wings encircling her young.
And she sang.
Not a war song. Not a call to power.
A mother’s blessing.
Words ancient and tender, passed from one Luna to another.
:: Flames beneath stars, wings wrapped in dawn—
My heart in your song, my soul in your bond.
Grow fierce, grow kind, and never break—
For in your joy, I too shall wake. ::
The room quieted.
Antonin bowed his head.
The Ancients outside lowered their wings in reverence.
And the Goddess, watching from beyond the veil, whispered:
“The SoulSong has become Flame.”
