Chapter 24
I couldn't get the image of her out of my head... She looked as if she was sleeping so peacefully, but looked so pale.
She melted into my arms as if even though she was unconscious, she knew she was safe with me, and she was.
We all stood around confused at our entry way awaiting the Humphries for supper, something was not right. I have known this family my entire life and they were the definition of punctual, never early and never late. I began to get restless and could not remain still as an odd aching in my stomach began to grow. Something was not right...
" Oh Charles would you please stop pacing you're making me anxious "
Before I could muster up a reply to my mother I heard a very faint scream and my eyes darted to our front door. My family all stood confused asking me what prompted that reaction, but instead of waiting to hear more, my gut told me I had to go outside. Something was not right. Once I swing the door open I see the familys carriage right in front of me and what sounded like Mrs Humphrie screaming for her daughter...
" HELENA "
My heart dropped to my stomach and my body began to move quicker than my mind was able to. I nearly ripped the carriage door off the hinges at the sound of her name being called out for like that, as I felt the heat creep all over my body I began to lose any sensible thought I had in my brain. All my eyes were able to gather from the scene in front of me was Helenas death grip she had on her mother and the painfully scared look she had on her face the look made my soul scream out to her and that was all I needed to see. Without another thought I had swooped her into my arms and althought I was calm on the outside, inside I was a mess, I was screaming for her to wake up, but I do not understand why. I bark for someone to send for a doctor and ignore any questions or cries of worry coming from our family around us. Looking down at her in my arms I felt my will grow inside of me, my strength felt limitless, I could feel all of my blood flow in every single one of my veins as well as fear coursing through them all at once. I have no idea what is going on myself but one thing inside I knew for certain, I will make sure she wakes up and I will make sure she is okay. Making it to the door of my room I just shove my back into the door with all my might forcing it open, immediately laying her into my bed I brush some loose hairs out of her face before hesitantly stepping back from her so her mother and father can be beside her. I could not hear anyone or anything around me my focus was only on her. Watching her chest rise and fall giving me some sort of relief to see that she is breathing. The doctor stepped into the room and I have no clue what came over me. I hadn't realized everybody else had began to give him space to evaluate her but I stood over his shoulder the entire time. Analyzing his every move, watching where he touched her, trying to figure out what he was looking for. I was so concentrated I hadn't realized he stopped to look up at me.
" Can I help you sir ? "
the words that came out of his mouth made my blood boil what seemed like instantly..
" Are you here to ask questions or do what you were called upon for, If you do not help her there is going to be- "
" Charles enough ! "
ignoring my mothers plea I stepped closer to the doctor before I felt a strong grasp on each one of my arms but before I could react I had realized I was being shoved out of the room by my brothers, or I should say attempting to be shoved out as each of them were not doing a very good job and struggling quite a bit although it was a team effort. Snapping out of her trance I shrugged off their grip and pushed them both off of me ignoring the looks I was receiving from them all in the room. My brothers will forgive me later. Nobody bothered to call after me while I made my way out of the room, I wouldn't have listened if any of them did anyway...this is not me. Rubbing my hand over my face I feel something pulling and pulling and pulling at me. The more I carried forward the harder it felt to continue. The sound of her mother screaming out her name on repeat in my brain fading in and out in and out. This all began to make my ears ring, make my head spin. Feeling rather disoriented I signalled swifty for my carriage to be pulled forward before I allow any more of my emotions to get the best of me...this isn't me. Becoming more and more frustrated I wasted no time to enter my carriage as soon as it was in front of me. Swinging me head back I took a few deep breaths and the more I did the more I realized what I had just done. The way I actedin front of everyone... an idiot... a fool... I am nobody's fool. Letting out a groan I slap my hands on my face before running them down un able to ignore my thoughts. Too many thoughts are rushing through my brain I feel like an idiot acting out of instinct and emotion but, I feel like an idiot for leaving her side even more...
